1 NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS SERVICE USDA, NASS, Oregon Field Office 00 Oregon Vineyard and Winery Report February 00 Frequency: Annual 0 SW rd Ave., Room Portland, Oregon 0 (0) or 00 nassor@nass.usda.gov Website: Oregon again produced and crushed a record number of grapes in 00. Increased production is attributed to both higher yields and newly bearing acres. On a state level, growers have not seen yields as high since when the average yield was. tons per acre. Oregon grape growers planted a record breaking, new acres in 00. The next largest reported planting was, new acres in. Despite low inventory, Oregon wineries were able to increase case sales two percent over last year. Many vineyard operators reported that 00 was a great year for growing grapes; but there were also a number of challenges. Growers in many areas struggled with labor shortages, economic constraints, and short water supplies. Controlling birds, deer, gophers, and the occasional bear are problems every year. Powderly mildew and springtime frost events were reported in isolated areas. Zoning and urban growth boundaries are issues of concern for both vineyards and wineries in many areas of the State. Numerous Oregon wineries struggled with growth related issues in 00 including inadequate inventory, overall storage capacity and tank space, cash flow, longterm grape contacts, management issues, and personnel to keep up with required paperwork. Many wineries also reported being frustrated with complicated outofstate direct shipping regulations. In relation to last year, very few unfilled wine grape needs were reported. Wineries most frequently reported needing Noir, Gris, and. Thank you to all the owners, operators, managers, winemakers, assistants, accountants, bookkeepers, secretaries and spouses who took time from their busy schedules to provide the data compiled in this publication.
