1 Rancho Bernardo Newcomers Social Club Newsletter May 2017 For anyone who has lost their copy of the newsletter, you may always go to the Website and obtain the same information ( Upcoming Special Events Old Globe Theatre Tour Friday, May 19, 2017 The Old Globe is providing us with a private guided tour of San Diego s historic theatre in Balboa Park. The event is scheduled at 10:30 AM on Friday, May 19, The original Old Globe was built in 1935 as part of the California Pacific International Exhibition and was modeled after Shakespeare s Old Globe in London. There s much more to the Old Globe than the annual Grinch. Milestones in the history of the theatre and evolution of award winning diverse theatrical achievement are part of the presentation. The behind the scenes tour includes backstage insight into costume creation, set design, stage production and the technology associated with integrated theatre operations. The tour is approximately 90 minutes and promises to be most enjoyable. Lunch options are numerous, both in the park and at nearby restaurants. Cost of the tour is only $5.00 per person ($3.00 for seniors). Car-pooling will be available. For additional information please contact Roger McCormack at or rcormax@gmail.com. June Wine & Dine Wednesday, June 14, 2017 Join us on Wednesday, June 14 at 5:30 PM for a delightful dinner at Café Luna, an intimate eatery serving Italian specialties such as homemade pasta, veal scaloppini and tiramisu. Café Luna is located at Rancho Carmel Drive #2, San Diego, CA 92128, behind the Olive Garden restaurant. You may order from the regular menu and will receive separate checks. 4 Sunday Supper Club meets up to six times per year at members' homes for a sit-down dinner. (Sunday evening of odd months). Depending upon the number of people who sign up, each Supper Club group is limited to from six to eight guests per home, including host/hostess. The host/hostess sets the theme, and the time, and provides the entrée with accompanying wine. Each guest brings either appetizer, salad, or dessert with the drink of choice to complement their dish. It is expected that each couple (or one/two singles) take at least one turn at hosting a dinner each year. Mixed Golf Holey Niners Golf Group meets at the Oaks North Golf Course on Sundays. June Greer is the chairperson for this activity. The group will meet on May 21. Contact Barbara Whiteman by May 16 if you want to play at The Old Bold Pilots will meet at 7:30 AM on the second Monday of each month at Denny s for a no-host breakfast with camaraderie. We welcome all former or current military and airline pilots only. Contact: Denny Shafer at if interested. 5 Other Area Happenings First Wednesdays - Enjoy a FREE performance at the California Center for the Arts, 340 N. Escondido Blvd., in Escondido at 4 and 7 PM on May 3, Performing in May are Rip Carson & the Valients. Rip is what you would call a prodigy; he can play any instrument he puts his hands on. Rip has been playing rockabilly since the age of 13 and has headlined concerts, festivals, and clubs world-wide in addition to releasing several albums. After a break from the road, having a child, and spending lots of hours practicing and writing songs, Carson is back with a new band, some new guitars (the old ones got smashed), and a cache of songs that will have you out of your seat swinging and singing along! Get there early; free seats go quickly. RB Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale - Wednesday May 3, 5 to 7:30, Thursday May 4, 10 to 4, Friday May 5, 10 to 4, Saturday May 6, 10 to 2. Rancho Bernardo Library, Bernardo Center Drive Poway Concert - The Poway Symphony Orchestra will be joined by the Poway Community Choir in a program that will begin with the choir singing a selection of choir music under the direction of Nancy Gray. Then the combined groups under the baton of Maestro John LoPiccolo will perform two powerful compositions for choir and orchestra by Beethoven and Brahms. The second half of the concert will be orchestral and include two movements of Händel s Watermusic Suite as well as, most notably, the famous violin concerto No1 by Max Bruch performed by acclaimed violinist Misha Vayman as soloist. This concert will take place at 4:00 PM on Sunday, May 21, Admission is $15/$12/$10 for general/seniors/students, and children under 12 are free. Tickets can be purchased on line at the orchestra s website or at the door beginning one hour before the concert. A Day at the Races - Wednesday, July 26. Join the Oaks North Travel Club event and avoid the traffic and parking lot hassles. The $50.00 price includes bus ride, seating on the Terrace level and table service.
