January 2010: Temperature and Ice Wine Hours Summary Niagara Region WIN Staff February 10, 2010
OVERVIEW Daily temperatures in January 2010 were near-normal, with temperatures slightly cooler in Niagara west. The average monthly temperature across the Niagara West stations was 0.4 C below the normal daily mean, based on Environment Canada s 30-year normal for Vineland. The average monthly temperature across the Niagara East stations was 0.1 C above the normal daily mean, based on Environment Canada s 30-year normal for St. Catharines. The coldest temperatures occurred on the 9 th and 10 th of January. These minimums ranged from C at the Queenston station to C at the Grimsby station. The average number of ice wine opportunities that arose in December of 2009 continued into the new year; resulting in an average number of ice wine grape harvesting opportunities for the 2009/2010 ice wine season. Colder than average temperatures in January 2009 resulted in a much higher accumulation of ice wine hours than in January 2010.
2 TEMPERATURE ANALYSIS: The minimum temperatures for January 2010 ranged from C at the Lincoln Lakeshore station to C at the Grimsby station. This occurred during the overnight period of January 9 th and 10 th. These minimum temperatures were a few degrees higher than those in 2009: ranging from C at the Queenston station to C at the Grimsby station. As can be seen in the following figure, there were 16 days in January when temperatures fell below -8 C at some point during the day.

4 ICE WINE HOURS ANALYSIS: Finding appropriate times for harvesting grapes for ice wine proved more challenging this season than in On the whole, however, the number of ice wine hours accumulated this season was close to normal. Near normal temperatures in January 2010 contributed to all stations accumulating similar ice wine hours to January 2008, but fewer than in The total number of ice wine hours this January ranged from 113 hours at Lincoln Lakeshore to 145 hours at Jordan Escarpment. Total ice wine hours for the 2009/2010 season (December and January) ranged from 143 at Lincoln Lakeshore to 212 hours at Jordan Escarpment. Most locations accumulated more ice wine hours within the 2009/2010 December through January period, than in 2007/2008 but fewer than in 2008/2009.

The following figures outline the potential grape harvesting opportunities that occurred in January. The standard ice wine harvesting temperatures from -8 C to -12 C are illustrated in light blue. 6
