1 146 Beaches and scenic places to visit on Waiheke Island Beaches and scenery on Waiheke Island are two of the attributes that make the island one of Auckland s most desirable holiday destinations. During the summer months there are plenty of beaches to choose from. Whether you seek a lively atmosphere with a range of beach activities, a secluded hideaway where you can have the beach to yourself, a golden sand beach or a rocky bush clad bay, Waiheke will have it. The scenery on the island is made up of pohutukawa lined beaches, native bush, farmland and views to Auckland city, the Coromandel and other islands in the Gulf. Northern Beaches and Bays Oneroa Facing towards the sunny north, Oneroa is a popular visitor spot with a busy and vibrant village. A range of accommodation exists at Oneroa as well as stunning views of the white sand bay below and the Coromandel Peninsula in the distance. There is a free gas BBQ and public toilets by the beach. Little Oneroa Little Oneroa is a white sand, sheltered bay lined with pohutukawa trees for shade, calm waters that are safe for swimming and a popular bay for boats to moor. Just a stone s throw from Oneroa, Little Oneroa is within walking distance to all the restaurants and shops of the village. There is a free gas BBQ, children s playground, public toilets and the Little Oneroa Beach Store. Palm Beach Set in native bush with a beautiful beach below, Palm Beach is a popular place to live and to visit. At certain times of year, phosphorescence can fill the bay making a stunning display in the water. The area has its own restaurant, beach store, free gas BBQs and children s playground. Onetangi The two kilometre stretch of white sand on Onetangi Beach makes this settlement a popular holiday destination. It is perfect for water activities such as windsurfing, swimming and the occasional surf. The Strand is lined with houses and has two beach café restaurants, a free gas BBQ and public toilets. Western Beaches and Bays Matiatia Matiatia is an entry point to Waiheke with a busy ferry terminal, yachts moored in the harbour and a bay scattered with olive groves. The Matiatia Wharf terminal has an information kiosk, café, bus and taxi transfers, plus car and bike hire. Church Bay Church Bay, just south of Matiatia, is fast growing into an exclusive retreat with its sprinkling of vineyards and olive groves including the renowned Mudbrick and Cable Bay vineyard restaurants. The vineyards and the accommodation options match their views spectacular. Southern Beaches and Bays Rocky Bay Rocky Bay offers the perfect secluded island escape. Clad with native bush, the area is graced with stunning surrounds and as its name implies, sheltered rocky bays. It is also home to some of the island s most spectacular walkways and just around the corner from Te Whau Point. There is a free gas BBQ and public toilets. Whakanewha Bay Whakanewha is a 2,700 hectare Regional Park with a mature forest of native bush, a large wetland, remains of Maori and European history and the rare dotterel a native New Zealand bird species. Whakanewha has the island s only campground, areas for picnics, bush walks and shallow swimming, ideal for all the family on its glorious curve of shell covered beach. Putiki Bay Putiki Bay is a popular haven for boaties, offering good shelter in all except southwest winds. At the entrance to the bay, two small islands are joined by an isthmus. Surfdale Surfdale is a favourite spot for

2 windsurfers with a frequent breeze to set the sails and a sandy bottom to protect the feet. Surfdale village has a range of shops, services and restaurants. Blackpool Blackpool is a small settlement of beach houses and permanent residences set on a peaceful rocky beach, making it perfect for kayaking and admiring views of Auckland City in the distance. 147 Eastern Beaches and Bays Man O War Bay Man O War Bay is located on the eastern side of Waiheke, commonly referred to as the Bottom End. A very popular bay for anchorage, Man O War Bay is on the isolated side of the island so is scarcely populated. A Department of Conservation walking track leads up to the historic site of Stony Batter. Walks on Waiheke Walks on Waiheke Island provide the perfect way to get close to nature and discover the beauty of the terrain. While some of the walks are easy strolls, most walking experiences on the island are of tramping track standard and require a reasonable level of fitness. A new series of signposted walks has been released by Auckland City Council, including a new walkway at Park Point, which opened in August 2008 as part of the Park Point subdivision. Always take a sunhat, sunscreen, a rain jacket and plenty of water. Matiatia/Owhanake Loop 3 Hours ~ Access: Matiatia Wharf. This walk is ideal to take in as much of the island as possible without venturing too far from the ferry and Oneroa Village. The main loop takes about three hours at a leisurely pace, while several side trips take in some of Waiheke s historical highlights. Park Point Coastal Loop 2 hours ~ Access: End of Cable Lane, off Walter Frank Drive. Follow the track around this piece of coastline previously closed to the public. Discover Te Wharau Bay and look out for the numbered yellow information disks around the walkway, explaining significant spots and items of natural heritage. No dogs allowed on this walk. Church Bay Circuit 3 Hours ~ Access: Matiatia Wharf. Spectacular views, a special scenic reserve and an area of historical significance are features of this sometimes strenuous walk. Follow the beach to the southern end, cross the stream and climb the hillside to the first track intersection. Oneroa / Blackpool Stretch 1.5 Hours ~ Access: Tui Street. This walk starts at the island s main village, Oneroa. Two access ways are available from Oneroa Village to Oneroa Beach one on the corner of Oceanview and Waikare Roads, and the other opposite the Red Cross Hall. Hekerua Bay to Palm Beach 2 Hours ~ Access: Top of Goodwin Ave and Queen s Drive. A concrete path zig-zags down through Watters Glen to Hekerua Bay. Turn hard-right from the end of the concrete path to access Te Aroha Avenue. The incline is gentle and grassed for 250 metres, then becomes a steep track with more than 100 steps. Whakanewha Regional Park 2.5 Hours ~ Access: Gordons Road On the south side of Waiheke Island, Whakanewha Regional Park is known for its mature coastal forest, cascading streams, and sweeping crescent-shaped beach, which is cut in two by a forestcovered headland. At high tide the water is shallow, warm and ideal for children. Part of the beach is home to the endangered native dotterel. For more information visit govt.nz Onetangi Meanderings 2 Hours ~ Access: The Strand Onetangi is Waiheke s longest ocean beach. A particularly beautiful part of the island, the bay s long, white-sand beach is ideal for family outings, safe swimming and for picnics, with a choice of refreshment establishments. Stony Batter Historic Reserve 1 Hour ~ Access: Man O War Bay Road (follow signposts). During World War II Stony Batter was part of the Auckland coastal defence system, but fortunately Auckland was never attacked and the guns were never fired in anger. 3 148 Vineyards, Wineries and Olive producers Waiheke Island has an abundance of award-winning wineries and olive groves that have become part of the fabric of Waiheke s tourism and an essential stop-over for visitors to the island. The hot, dry summers and stony soils have made Waiheke home to boutique wineries that produce unique, high quality wines based on cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec, cabernet franc and more recently chardonnay grape varieties. Several vineyards have their own olive groves producing Cable Bay Vineyards The winery, restaurant, tasting room and cellar door is set amidst vineyards and olive groves above Church Bay, close to Matiatia ferry. It produces prolific awardwinning oils in New Zealand and abroad. Dotterels are shorenesting birds making them an easy target for predators such as dogs, cats and rats. On Waiheke, Northern New Zealand dotterels nest at Whakanewha, Awaawaroa Bay, Te Matuku Bay, Piemelon Bay and several eastern beaches. Whakanewha is a well known spot for these endangered birds. The Waiheke Dotterel Guardians Charitable Trust was founded in 2000 to monitor the population and protect the birds through predator baiting and trapping, and fencing nesting grounds. It is forbidden under the Wildlife and Reserves Act to interfere with these birds. Avoid the fenced areas especially in the breeding season between August and February. Volunteer as a watcher and help with trapping and baiting by calling Park Ranger Andy Spence on

The safari is the main fundraiser for the Trust which helps sick Waiheke children and their families.
