Presents: An Oregon Wine Adventure for E.W.I. Portland is one of the hottest cities to visit in the United States. This dynamic city and its surrounding area are famous for their lush parks, gardens and countryside, gorgeous coastline beaches, dazzling river communities, majestic mountain peaks, exciting nightlife, spectacular shopping, and unimaginable outdoor adventures. It is a culinary playground and the wine is absolutely stunning. Vintners have been producing award-winning wines in the Willamette Valley for decades. The area s terroir is considered to be one of the best for the success of Burgundian-style wines, such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Fume, and Pinot Blancs. The Syrah s are incredible and the Bordeaux varietals shine. This itinerary is designed for anyone who appreciates fine wine, excellent cuisine and the thrill of a new wine adventure. All you have to do is relax and enjoy!
Day One: Thursday, October 1, Arrive Portland Welcome to beautiful Portland, Oregon! Upon arrival into the Portland Airport, your driver will meet your group and take you to your 4-Star hotel in downtown Portland. Your grand historic hotel, built in 1912 is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a Portland landmark, and a timeless tribute to its founder and designer. Carefully nurtured for eight decades, the stately hotel retains the opulence for which it is world-famous. A.E. Doyle's architectural talent reflective of a golden era combined with the original owners tenacity, business savvy and impeccable taste live on as the foundation of this American classic. Enjoy the fine amenities and special treats they offer such as complimentary afternoon tea and cookies and fine wine tasting in the cellar in the evenings. Upon arriving in Portland, you will leave your luggage at the hotel and first enjoy a spectacular lunch and views at one of Portland s most popular restaurants overlooking downtown Portland, the Willamette River and the Cascade Mountains before returning to check in to the hotel. Your fabulous hotel is only steps away from fine dining, shopping, The Pearl District, galleries, theatres and much more. Spend the remainder of the afternoon discovering some of the city s unique offerings like Powell s City of Books, a virtual book lover's paradise; or try some decadent treats and sipping chocolate at Cacao or Sweet Masterpiece Chocolate & Coffee; or enjoy a relaxing walk or bike ride along the river.
After your day in Portland, you might want to take a break from shopping and journey back in time and space to Hollywood s golden era in the Driftwood Lounge at the Hotel deluxe. This is the perfect place for a late afternoon cocktail before dinner. This evening you will be treated to special dinner prepared for you by the award-winning culinary team at your hotel. The chefs are known for numerous specialty dishes, including Dungeness crab cakes with roasted red pepper sauce and cilantro, dill-cured salmon served with cucumber and red onion salad and roasted rack of lamb. Your dinner will be equally inspiring and delicious! Day Two: Friday, October 2, Oregon Wine Country Enjoy an early breakfast at the hotel before you begin your Oregon wine country adventure. Today you will experience the beautiful scenery and wines of the Willamette Valley. The wineries you visit have been carefully selected and will be among the best Oregon has to offer. You will depart from the hotel for a full day in wine country and enjoy lunch at one of the wineries. The Willamette Valley is 150 miles long and up to 60 miles wide making it Oregon's largest AVA. Named for the river that flows through it, the Willamette Valley has the largest concentration of wineries and vineyards in Oregon and includes six subappellations: Dundee Hills, Eola-Amity Hills, McMinnville, Ribbon Ridge, Yamhill- Carlton District and the recently approved Chehalem Mountains. The Willamette Valley is relatively mild throughout the year, with cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers. This temperate climate, combined with coastal marine influences, make the gentle growing conditions within the Valley ideal
for cool climate grapes, including Pinot Noir. The Willamette Valley is recognized as one of the premier wine producing areas in the world and is most widely known for its award-winning Pinot Noir. However, it consistently earns top honors for other such cool-climate varieties as Pinot Gris, Dijon clone Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc. Your tour today will include a visit in the Dundee Hills to the only winery in Oregon with caves. Carved out of the hillside beneath the winery, the underground aging caves are modeled on the subterranean cellars of the Côte d Or. Naturally insulated with volcanic rock, the temperature in the caves remains between degrees throughout the year, with humidity below 75 percent. The narrow passageways are lined with 550 premium French oak barrels, and although each barrel holds 60 gallons, the styles differ widely. In the caves, as in the vineyard, the approach is hands-on and just as they harvest their grapes only when they reach optimum ripeness, they move their wines from barrel to bottle only when they are absolutely ready. Enjoy the stunning Pinot Noirs that are estate grown and made during your private winery tour and tasting! At the conclusion of your day, you will return to Portland and have the remainder of the evening on your own and may choose any of the wonderful local restaurants for dinner. Day Three: Saturday, October 3, Oregon Wine Country Today after breakfast you will check out of the hotel and visit a few more Willamette Valley wineries before heading to the scenic Oregon coast.
One of the prestigious wineries you visit will be a family owned winery which covers 100 acres of vines and features a variety of elevations, exposures and soil types. The different sites express distinctive terroir and microclimates. These differences, combined with knowledgeable varietal and clonal selections, are the determinants of the overall expression of varietal flavors, character and ultimate wine structure. Over time, the family utilized immense, recycled, old-growth timbers, local stone, and a sweeping corten roof to create a building made of Pacific Northwest materials, designed to reflect a sense of place. The stone walls were built in the spirit of honoring the great history and permanence of wineries throughout the world. You will also enjoy lunch at one of these beautiful vineyards. Relish the views, warm hospitality and award-winning wines of Oregon s Willamette Valley before departing for Cannon Beach. Upon arriving in Cannon Beach, you will have time to check in to your premium lodging at your oceanfront resort and try a local restaurant for dinner before retiring for the evening. The resort overlooks the sentinels of Haystack Rock and in the distance, Tillamook Lighthouse -- incredible backdrops for spectacular views adorned with stunning sunrises and sunsets. For many, Cannon Beach, some 80 miles west of Portland, is the place for a summer sojourn. Bracketed by sea-splitting headlands and miles of wild sands, this town of 1,600 residents is a mix of upscale inns, funky motels, fine restaurants, chowder houses, and more than 20 art galleries and studios.
Day Four: Sunday, October 4, Cannon Beach / Tillamook After breakfast this morning, you will drive along the stunning Oregon coastline to visit the seaside town of Tillamook and experience the wonderful world of the Tillamook Cheese and dairy product factory. You will be able to see where they make the cheese and package the product as you learn about the history and the cheese-making process. Interactive kiosk screens teach you about the cooperative and products. After your self-guided tour, you can smell and taste the delicious aroma of freshly baked waffle cones that feature over 40 flavors each day. Or stop by the fudge counter to taste 16 different kinds of fudge made from fresh butter. The gift shop and gourmet store is the perfect place to pick up gifts and souvenirs. After your tour, you will return to Cannon Beach to enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure. There are many shops, restaurants, and other activities in town to discover, all within walking distance. You may want to stop by a local glass blowing gallery that features a live view of glass blowing or just take a leisurely walk through the art driven community. Your wine tour will conclude tonight with a farewell dinner experience featuring true oceanfront dining at its best. The Executive Chef will wow you with his fresh approach to northwest coastal cuisine. Highlighting each ingredient with color, texture, seasonings, and special cooking techniques, he showcases northwest cuisine in what he describes as "simple elegance." Enjoy the view with your friends and savor the food and memories of your Oregon wine escape!
