20 Reminder!!!! Kitigan Zibi School is now accepting registrations for the school year. Registration forms were sent out in the mail last week. If you have lost or misplaced yours, you can pick one up at the school from Rachel. In order to plan effectively for the next school year, it is important that all registration forms be returned to the school as soon as possible. On the May 31 st P.D. Day, Kitigan Zibi School will be having a day of planning for the school year and it would help to know how many students from our community will be with us next year. Parental input is always welcomed so if you have any suggestions for what we need to work on next year, don t hesitate to call the school.
21 The Walking Out Ceremony will be held again at this year s Kitigan Zibi s traditional powwow. This ceremony, borrowed from the Cree nation, will happen on Saturday morning, June 1st at 10am. This is a special time for the family to introduce their child to the community, and introduce the child to his or her traditional role as a male or female in society. This ceremony also provides an occasion for the first time a child walks on his or her own (or with a little adult help) outside, signifying movement toward adulthood and greater responsibility. The children are dressed in traditional clothing and given toy tools and utensils, representing the real tools and utensils they eventually will use. For the walking out, each child walks through the doorway of the teepee, proceeds a few feet to a decorated tree, circles the tree, then returns to the teepee, where grandparents and family greet the child and everyone enjoys a small feast. We would like to meet all prospective parents on Friday, May 31st, 6pm at the teepee. Please bring balsam boughs for the floor and pathway. If you wish additional information, please contact Pauline at or Shirley, or or Facebook kokom shirley.
