1 WALLER NEWS From the Principal From the Principal I would like to take a minute to remind parents of the importance of daily reading in your child s overall education. Students will be bringing home books at their instructional level on a regular basis. Take the time to listen to your child read! It is also important to read to your child on a regular basis, no matter what their age! CLAWS Caring Loving Awesome Willing Students We will continue to implement our CLAWS recognitions this year, CLAWS stands for Caring Loving Awesome Willing Students. Students who are demonstrating good behavior, striving academically, showing acts of kindness, following rules or any other such positive experiences will have the opportunity to get a CLAWS and at the end of the month I will draw a name from each classroom box. These students will have the privilege of eating a pizza lunch with me. I look forward to having this opportunity to get to know your child better! Hours A reminder regarding Waller s school hours, they are 8:10 3:20. We would like to Thank you for making every effort to get the children here on time! The teachers start their morning lessons as soon as the kids come in and hang up their belongings, which doesn t take long. If for some reason your child will be late, a Tardy Pass is given out through Mrs. Grant s Office (the Health and Attendance Office), a reminder to use the front door if you are running late, and then you can walk right into the front door of her office! Also if your child is not going to be at school, we appreciate it if you call Mrs. Grant to let her know! The phone number with her extension is ext. 1. Pictures pictures were taken on September 27 th. Retakes will take place on Tuesday, vember 9 th for those that were not in attendance on the 27 th, or if you get your picture packet, and you don t like the pictures, just return the packet on the 9 nd and have the picture retaken. Volunteer/Background Checks Just a reminder that if you are interested in helping out at school, whether it is chaperoning on a field trip, helping out for popcorn day, working field day or the book fairs etc. you need to fill out and turn in a Volunteer/Background Form. Once you do this, and are approved, it is good for 3 years. Forms are available in the Waller Office, or on the BASD website, under the Families link. (Let us know if you would like one, and we can sent it home with your child!) Seal A Smile Seal a Smile will take place at Waller on vember 27 th and 28 th! Parent Lunch & Meetings Wednesday, October 10 Grade 2 will have a Parent Meeting from 2:00 2:45. Please join us if you are able!
2 PTO Information The Waller PTO is very active. Parents, we need your support to make Waller the best it can be. PTO meetings are the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 in the Waller Library. Please plan to attend Oct. 16 and share in the decision making of your child s school! It would be Great to see you there! There will be no school on Tuesday, October 2 nd and Friday, October 26 th. Teachers will be in inservice. Sign In Sign Out Thank You so much for signing in and out of the building when you are visiting! Taking the Visitor Pass to enter the hallways has been working out great for everyone! Also thanks for sending notes to the classroom teachers if you have to take your child out early! This helps so much to reduce the interruptions into the classrooms. PIN Numbers Reminder to parents: When sending lunch money to school, please be sure to put it in an envelope or zip lock baggie with your child s name and PIN number written on it. Fees fees are $32.00 for all grades 5K Gr. 4, $20 for 4K Students. We ask that you pay all, or a portion (monthly payments are welcome too) of any remaining school fees that are due soon. Please make your check payable to Waller or BASD. A reminder that these bills do not go away until paid in full. 504 Accommodation The Burlington Area District, in accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, does not discriminate against any person with handicapping conditions and cannot be excluded from participation in school activities solely because of their handicap. This includes, but is not limited to, instructional courses, vocational programs, or co-curricular activities. Please contact your school counselor for more information. ALL information is available at our website: basd.k12.wi.us PLEASE LIKE US ON FACEBOOK AT: Waller Elementary and/or Waller Elementary PTO
3 Counselor s Corner Mrs. Hoffman Guidance Theme Responsibility/Study Skills/Growth Mindset For the month of October, our Guidance theme is Responsibility, especially pertaining to being a responsible student. Guidance lessons will focus on helping students become more responsible by being good listeners, paying attention and following directions. We will also discuss the importance of Growth Mindset. Growth Mindset helps students to think positive and realize they maybe just can t do it YET, but they can if they keep working hard. Please help to reinforce these skills at home by taking a few minutes to talk with your child about what they learned each day as well as checking their planners or folders every night. In September, all students also learned about a program called STOP, WALK and TALK. These 3 steps should be used when a student feels someone else is bothering them. First, they should tell them to STOP, if that student keeps bothering them, they then WALK away and finally if the student comes back and bothers them again they need to TALK to an adult. Students were taught that they should skip talking and walking if they or another student is ever physically hurt. It is important students tell an adult right away if they are ever hurt or see someone else being hurt. Zones of Regulation This year, we have a -wide focus on teaching our students the Zones of Regulation. Students learn that different feelings correspond to different zones. For example, in the Blue zone a student might feel sad, tired or sick and in the Green Zone a student is happy, calm and ready to learn. The Red Zone means a student is angry, mean or out of control and in the Yellow zone a student is nervous, silly, excited, or frustrated. Students have been working hard on recognizing what zone they are in and learning calm down strategies to help them move from different zones back into the Green, where we hope they can be most of their day. There is no such thing as a bad zone, but we teach them if their body is not feeling good, they need to try to use some of the strategies they ve been taught to get back to the Green Zone, where their body should feel calm, happy and ready to learn. Ask your child about the Zones, they can be used at home too! RED RIBBON WEEK We will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week, October 22 nd -25 th this year. There is no on October 26 th. Like in year s past, we will be having different dress up days. Look for an information sheet to come home soon with the different dress up days listed.
