6 The Story Behind Roger s Diner We would like to welcome you to Roger s Diner at Tryon International Equestrian Center and Tryon Resort. Jennifer and I have lived in this area for many years and hope you find the same love and appreciation for the quiet foothills of western North Carolina as we have during our time here. We look forward to Roger s Diner becoming a local favorite for this wonderful community. Enjoy! Sincerely, Roger Smith The inspiration behind Roger s Diner came after Crossroads, a favored restaurant in the western North Carolina region, burned down, leaving the foothills without a notable replacement. Members of the Tryon Equestrian Partners, Roger and Jennifer Smith alongside Mark and Katherine Bellissimo, who frequented Crossroads, were heartbroken when it was destroyed and wanted to build a comparable diner to pay homage to a favorite local gathering spot. Mark and Katherine thought it would be a great surprise to dedicate the new restaurant to Roger Smith. They discussed it with the partners, Joe and Cindy Mitchell, Jenji Mercer, Diana Mercer, Howard and Gwen Dvorkin and Lisa Lourie. All agreed it would be a great tribute to their friend who introduced them to the foothills area. A personal booth in Roger's Diner highlights Roger's family, friends, and accomplished equestrian career.
