1 AAA Imports' monthly publication for the premier dish garden, lucky bamboo & bonsai grower Volume 13, Issue 07 - July 2013 Oyster Hunting: Trip to Tainan During the trip to Kaoshiung at Tainan, we arranged a visit to an oyster farm. Since I ve never been to an oyster farm, I didn t know what to expect. We were able to ride on a fl at motor boat and our local host- the owner of the oyster farm, Mr. Zhou, introduced us to the production of oysters as well as the area where oysters are harvested. While the tour was moving on, Mr. Zhou s assistant was grilling fresh oysters and clams for us to taste. Mr. Zhou promoted the oysters in this area as the best oysters in the world because there was absolutely no water pollution and the water quality was fi t for oyster production. Though I usually don t like eating oysters, I had one to taste and I have to say, the oysters were indeed tastier than others. It was very fresh and there was no fi shy sea smell. It was quite delicious and addicting. Even for a person who doesn t like oysters I enjoyed eating it very much. Bob

3 Trip to Seattle June 7th through June 9th we fl ew out to Seattle, WA to attend our niece s High School graduation from Charles Wright Academy, Tacoma, WA. WOW, what a school! Her graduating class, approximately forty-fi ve students were all accepted to top Engineering, Law and Medical Universities throughout the country. Imagine what these young people will do with their future lives? I certainly hope big and bright things! It was a quick trip for us, but we had a good time and the weather was beautiful and sunny and that was amazing in itself for the Pacifi c Northwest! Hope you enjoy the pictures of Gig Harbor, WA. We certainly enjoyed the big fur trees and the beautiful vistas. Debbie Mentzos Skillet-Roasted Strip Steaks w Pebre Sauce & Avocado by Debs This recipe was inspired by the popular Chilean sandwich, called a churrasco, that features a thin sandwich steak, mashed avocado and a type of salsa called Pebre. We have substituted tender strip steak for sandwich steaks to make a satisfying steak dinner. Searing a steak on the stovetop and then fi nishing it in a moderate oven allows for good browning, and the gentle heat helps ensure a tender result. INGREDIENTS PEBRE SAUCE 1/2 cup finely chopped sweet onion, such as Vidalia or Walla Walla 1 medium-large tomato, seeded and diced 1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro 2 tablespoons minced jalapeño, or serrano pepper 2 tablespoons red-wine or cider vinegar 1 clove garlic, minced 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt STEAK 3/4 teaspoon paprika 3/4 teaspoon ground cumin 3/4 teaspoon dried oregano 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, divided 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper Active Time: 30 minutes Total Time: 30 minutes Servings: to 10-ounce New York strip (top loin) steaks, trimmed 2 teaspoons canola oil 2 avocados, pitted and peeled excerpted from eatingwell.com DIRECTIONS 1. To prepare Pebre Sauce: Place onion in a medium bowl, cover with ice water and let soak for 10 to 20 minutes. Drain. Combine the onion, tomato, cilantro, jalapeño (or serrano), vinegar, garlic and 1/4 teaspoon salt in a medium bowl. 2. Preheat oven to 325 F. 3. To prepare steak: Mix paprika, cumin, oregano, 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper in a small bowl. Rub the spice mixture evenly over both sides of steaks. 4. Heat oil in a large ovenproof skillet, such as cast iron, over medium-high. Add the steaks and cook just until browned, 1 to 2 minutes per side. Transfer the pan to the oven and roast the steaks 5 to 7 minutes for medium-rare, depending on thickness. Transfer to a clean cutting board. Tent with foil and let rest for 5 minutes. 5. Meanwhile, mash avocados with the remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt in a small bowl. 6. Carve the steak into thin slices. Serve with the avocado and Pebre Sauce.juices run clear.
