1 AIS Generic Bar Codes The barcodes provided in this booklet are the default values for each commodity by FNS commodity code number. These codes can be used whenever there are any commodities that do not have a barcode or there are problems reading the barcode. The generic barcodes are setup in an easy to identify format. The codes use the UPC-A format and are 12 digits in length. The generic values use the following breakdown for the example provided: Digit Value Description 1 1 The first digit value of 1 = the letter A. A first digit value of 2 = the letter B. A first digit value of 6 = the letter F. A first digit value of 9 = the letter M The digits in columns 2-3 are always zero The three digits in columns 4-6 represent the numeric portion of the commodity code The digits in columns 7-8 are always zero The three digits in columns 9-11 represent the numeric portion of the commodity code and should always match the value of columns This is a check digit value it varies with every code as it is a calculation used to determine if all of the previous digits were scanned correctly. The example provided is the generic default code for (A057) Mixed Vegetables. In a standard UPC code found on most commodities, the code will contain as the first six digits from left to right is the manufacturer identifier. The next five digits are the product code. The last digit on the right side is the check digit value.
