4 Story Skill: Sequence of Events Directions: Fill in the timeline using your favorite picture book or fairy tale. Directions: Rewrite each base word below with the suffix less, -ful, or ous. 5 RI.3.3 #1 READ REFLECT REPEAT Lexile Level 730 NAME: Where Did Potato Chips Come From? A Potato chips come in many different flavors and styles. Some are wavy. Others are smooth. Some are big while others are broken into small pieces. There are even some that come in a long tube. But no matter their size, shape, or flavor, I bet you have your favorite! B So, where did these thin, crunchy, and crisp snack favorites really come from? They actually started off as French fries! French fries were a favorite food for many people, as they still are today. And for a chef by the name of George Crum, it was something that he was really good at cooking. C One day, Chef Crum made a plate of French fries for a group of hungry people dining at his restaurant. But one man didn t like the way they were made. He said that they were too thick. So he asked the waiter to take them back. D Chef Crum made a new plate of French fries, and this time they were thinner. The man who ordered them still was not happy or content. He said that they were still too thick and too soft. Once again, the waiter took them back. E Chef Crum was not happy that the man did not like his French fries. Everyone else loved them! So Chef Crum decided that he was going to show this man that he could make really thin slices of potatoes that were really hard and crunchy. He was going to make sure that the man wouldn t complain that they were too thick or too soft. F Chef Crum sliced the potatoes as thin as he could and then fried them in oil until they were very crunchy. He had the waiter take these to the man. Chef Crum didn t expect the man to like them, but he was wrong. The man loved them! In fact, he enjoyed them so much that he let others around taste them. Soon, everyone in the restaurant was asking for these newly made potatoes.! 6 RI.3.3 #1 READ REFLECT REPEAT Lexile Level 520 Words NAME: Where Did Potato Chips Come From? A B C D E F Potato chips are a good snack. But where did they come from? Did you know they began as French fries? A chef named George Crum made the first chips. It all began two hundred years ago. One day, Chef Crum made French fries for some hungry men dining at his restaurant. But one man did not like the way they were made. He said they were too thick. So he asked the waiter to take them back. Chef Crum made a new plate of French fries. This time they were thinner. But the man was still not happy or content. He said they were too thick and too soft again. So the waiter took them back. Chef Crum was not happy that the man did not like his fries. Everyone else loved them! Chef Crum wanted to show the man that he could make really hard and crunchy fries1 He sliced the potatoes as thin as he could. Then he fried them in oil until they were very crunchy. He had the waiter take these to the man. Chef Crum did not expect the man to like them. But Chef Crum was wrong! The man loved them! In fact, he liked them so much that he shared with the people near him. Soon, everyone in the restaurant was asking for some! Chef Crum had to work fast. So he cut the potatoes in circles.
