1 Mullet Wrapper May 2018 Volume 16, Issue 5 Please Welcome our New Curator of Education! Meet Katy Menne! She is the new Curator of Education at the NC Maritime Museum at Southport. Growing up all over the world as part of a navy family, she calls San Diego, CA home. Katy has been living in Myrtle Beach, SC for the last year and a half. Prior to living in Myrtle Beach, she attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia, earning her B.A. in History and Masters in Teaching, specializing in middle and high school social studies. In her free time, she loves to go to the beach, attending sporting events, run, read and watch documentaries. Earlier this year she went snuba-ing off the coast of Grand Cayman s which has sparked her interest in becoming dive certified. I was truly blessed to grow up in the family I did. I was able to see so much of the world that most people only get to read about. I got to fall in love with history standing right where events occurred. said Katy. She has traveled on 4 continents and hopes to see South America and Australia soon. My favorite part of traveling is using the public transportation. Nothing makes you feel so accomplished than when you successfully use it in a foreign city. If you re in Southport, stop in and welcome our newest member of the crew! Friends of the NC Maritime Museum Office: A Highly Planned and Cooperative Form of Theft: North Carolina s Naval Raiders, Lecturer: Andrew Duppstadt Join the museum as Duppstadt lectures on pirates, privateers, and commerce raiders with a strong connection to North Carolina. Throughout the 18th century, and again during the Civil War, North Carolina was known for producing and or harboring some of the best privateers and commerce raiders in North America. A reputation that was well-earned during the Golden Age of Piracy. Duppstadt will also explore personalities and events during the American Revolution, War of 1812, and Civil War that made North Carolina famous or infamous! Join us as we welcome Andrew Duppstadt as our 3 rd Tuesday Evening Speaker May 15th at 7:00 pm in the Southport Community Building. Patrons are asked to register in advance as space is limited. What do you do with a scurvy pirate? Well you make him pick 100 oranges, of course! Call to register your 4 to 6 year old for this fun program filled with songs and hands-on activities. Thank you to Dr. Lindley Butler for bringing Stede Bonnet out of the shadow of Blackbeard during our April 3rd Tuesday Program. We also learned a lot about the history of Barbados during the 18th century!

3 Saturday Night Adult Evening Programs NEW! Let out your inner child one Saturday night a month and join the Maritime Museum for fun activities for adults. BYOB and enjoy classes that were originally created for youngsters, but are modified for adults! Not interested in BYOB? We will have water and hot tea to relax, laugh, and have a creative time! Program held at the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport. 204 E Moore Street Maritime Cooking: Sizzling Sassy, Shrimp! This is our last Saturday Night Class of the Year. Join us for an evening of boiled shrimp, fried shrimp, shrimp dip and learn it the Lower Cape Fear way! This class will explore different ways to prepare this popular decapod crustacean. Saturday, June 9, :30-7pm $ tax for non FOM members, $ tax for FOM members and volunteers Maritime Museum Crabby Patties Ingredients 1 container of crab meat or cook and pick your own crabs to equal 1 pound 1 container of panko crumbs 1 red or green pepper, seeded, and chopped fine 1 Vidalia onion small, sliced fine 1 tablespoon of minced garlic 1-2 eggs, whipped 2 tablespoons of olive oil Old Bay Seafood breader Directions If using crab from a container, make certain to put the crab on a plate and pick through the contents before adding other ingredients. Sauté onions, pepper, and garlic and place in a bowl with 1 cup of panko crumbs. Add crab, whipped eggs and old bay. Mix with hands into patties, then roll in seafood breader. Flash fry crabby patties until golden brown. Place on plate lined with napkins. Serve with grilled asparagus and roasted potatoes. 3
