1 April 29, 2008 To our valued Broil King retailers; Subject: Signet / Sovereign / Sovereign XL During laboratory testing to measure the effect of flare-ups and grease fires, the bottom of the cookbox perforated due to the excessive temperature caused by continuing to operate the grill on high temperature settings during a grease fire. All of the above noted models are equipped with a full size heat shield under the firebox; however continued operation at high temperature would be hazardous. All of our gas barbecue grills, including the models listed above, have been tested and comply with the applicable safety standards in Canada, United States, Europe and other jurisdictions where our products are sold. In order to provide an additional measure of safety in the operation of the grill, our engineering department has developed a stainless steel baffle that can be easily placed into the bottom of the firebox without tools. It is designed to reduce flare-ups caused by grease and protect the cookbox from excessive heat should a grease fire occur. Please check your inventory. A Baffle Included label has been placed on inventory that has been reworked or recently produced with baffle. Provide Onward Manufacturing with the quantity of Signet/Sovereign and Sovereign XL in inventory. Baffle Kits will immediately be shipped to each location. 2. Display the Important Safety Notice which has been provided prominently until August 31, Insert the baffle kit into the carton and affix the baffle included label to the outside of the carton. 4. Record the model and serial number for each reworked Signet/Sovereign/Sovereign XL grill on the Tracking Form provided. For customers who receive an in store baffle, name and contact information should also be recorded on the Tracking Form. 5. Provide Onward Manufacturing with names and addresses of customers who have purchased any Broil King Signet/Sovereign/Sovereign XL models from 2006 to present. 6. 8 Safety Notice Frequently Asked Questions General Statement All barbecues can be subjected to excessive heat caused by grease fires. Broil King barbecues have been tested and comply with the applicable safety standards in Canada, United States, Europe and other jurisdictions where the products are sold. What do you mean by perforated? Perforated is the term used to describe a fracture in the bottom of the cookbox. Example: a crack or hole that is not original to the design. If it has a heat shield, why did this happen? The heat shield is exterior to the cookbox and reduces heat in the cabinet area. What is this baffle? The baffle is fabricated from stainless steel and fits in the bottom of the cookbox. It is designed to reduce flare-ups caused by grease and protect the cookbox from excessive heat should a grease fire occur. What do you mean by excessive heat? If a gas barbecue grill is operated at high heat settings during a grease fire, the temperature of the firebox can exceed its design limitation. If a grease fire is encountered, the gas should be turned off at the source. I want to return my barbecue. This is not a warranty issue. In order to provide an additional measure of safety in the operation of the grill we are providing a baffle to reduce the hazards that can be caused by a grease fire. The baffle has undergone testing and has been approved for use by CSA. I have another Broil King model. Does it have the same problem? Based on Onward s experience, they have not encountered issues of this nature. 10 2. Today s grilling profile goes beyond just grilling steaks chops and burgers. Consumers are now grilling entire meals on their barbecue grills which include many vegetables and even pizza and fruit. Broil King is one of the few Gas Barbecue Grills that has been designed to perform well with the lid up and with the lid down. Vaporization System Is specifically designed to fully cover the firebox above the burners. There is very little space between the flav-r-wave and the dividers. This design: - retains the heat to enhance lid up grilling - distributes heat evenly - maximizes vaporization of the juices for improved flavor and reduced maintenance - completely covers and protects the burners from corrosive acids, salts Cookbox Dividers - are placed between each burner to provide more cooking versatility though more precise zone temperature control. Cast Iron Cooking Grids The heavy duty, multi position, porcelain coated cast grids incorporate a unique deep vee / inverted vee profile. With the pointed side of the vee up the grids provide: - exceptional vaporization of the juices at grid level to enhance flavor - perfect steak house grill marks to enhance presentation of grilled food With the open part of the vee up the grids provide: - better grease control for fattier cuts of meat - retention of the juices and marinades when grilling vegetables and delicate foods such as fish - more surface area when grilling food such as bread and pizza Tube in Tube Burner Most tubular burners generate uneven heat caused by the introduction of cold gas under pressure at the front of a burner and the gas collecting at the back of the burner. This results in higher heat at the back of the burner and less heat at the front of the burner. Our patented tube in tube burner with graduated ports is constructed with an inner tube extending into a large diameter outer tube and solves the problems of uneven heat associated with other burners. 10
