She is abrasive in a good way and tells you exactly what is on her mind whether you agree with it or not. A word of advice, it usually is better to agree. But all kidding aside, Rusty s Zoo Revue show at Big Daddy s, was one of the first drag performances I ever saw when I moved into the Marigny. And to this day, I have yet to see a show that has rivaled it in getting such a diverse crowd of people. I quickly became a fan of the show and her personally. I have supported her every place she has worked. There is plenty to celebrate including the addition of novelist Ayana Mathis to the lineup. Ayana s The Twelve Tribes of Hattie has won rave reviews from everyone from Marilynne Robinson to Oprah. The novel traces the lives of an African-American family through Great Migration and beyond. Oprah chose her book for her club and is quoted, I can t remember when I read anything that moved me in quite this way, besides the work of Toni Morrison. Ayana will speak to finding your characters voice and will participate in the reading series. Other celebrity authors who will be on hand this year are Ellen Hart, Dorothy Allison, Val McDermid to just name a few. Events include master classes, panel discussions, readings, tours and parties. The Saints and Sinners Literary Festival was founded in 2001 as a new initiative designed as an innovative way to reach the community with information about HIV/AIDS, particularly disseminating prevention messages via the writers, thinkers and spokes-people of the GLBT community. It was also formed to bring the GLBT literary community together to celebrate the literary arts. The Festival has grown into an internationally-recognized event that brings together a who s who of GLBT publishers, writers and readers from throughout the United States and beyond. Varla Jean Merman is staying busy during the month of May and the Mystic Krewe of Satyricon is bringing her to you in two krewe fundraisers. The first is the opening performance of Re- Designing Women on May 22 at Mid- City Theatres. The roles of the lovely Atlanta ladies from Designing Women will be fabulously embodied by Varla Jean Merman, Sadie Shepard, Ricky Graham and Jack Long as they bring to the stage three episodes from the hit comedy. There will only be 100 tickets sold to this special performance so get your tickets now. Doors open at 7pm with the show at 8pm. Tickets are $30. The Mid-City Theatre is located at 3540 Toulouse Street. Then on Tuesday, May 28, Varla Jean is premiering her new show Twice Upon a Mattress before it goes to Provincetown for the summer. This entertainment extravaganza is directed by Ricky Graham and features Jefferson Turner. The show will be held at Café Istanbul in the New Orleans Healing Center located at 2372 St. Claude Avenue.
