1 Target audience (age): Ensino Médio Aim: get more information about the history of ice cream and how it was invented Duration: 50 min Organization: individual / group work Material: worksheet Preparation: make copies of the worksheet Information for the teacher: When: September 23 rd Celebration: The Ice Cream Day has been celebrated in Brazil for not very long. It has the objective of making people see ice cream as a healthy food and that can be consumed all year long. Procedure: Warm up students by asking them if they like ice cream. Ask them why they think so many people like ice cream and make a list on the board. This is a good opportunity to review vocabulary and also raise students awareness to the correction of their sentences. Have students talk about the origins of ice cream. Ask if they have an idea when it was invented and write on the board again. Tell them they re going to read a text about the history of ice cream and confirm their guesses. Hand out the worksheets and explain what they have to do. After they ve finished, check what they did.
2 1. Read. THE HISTORY OF ICE CREAM The origins of ice cream can be traced back to at least the 4th century B.C. Early references include the Roman emperor Nero (A.D ) who ordered ice to be brought from the mountains and combined with fruit toppings, and King Tang (A.D ) of Shang, China who had a method of creating ice and milk concoctions. Ice cream was likely brought from China back to Europe. Over time, recipes for ices, sherbets, and milk ices evolved and served in the fashionable Italian and French royal courts. After the dessert was imported to the United States, it was served by several famous Americans. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson served it to their guests. American colonists were the first to use the term ice cream. The name came from the phrase iced cream that was similar to iced tea. The name was later abbreviated to ice cream the name we know today. The treat became both distributable and profitable with the introduction of mechanical refrigeration. The ice cream shop has since become an icon of American culture. (Adapted from Accessed on July 23 rd, 2015) 2. Vocabulary. Find the meaning of the words below. a) concoction the combination of ingredients, especially in cookery. b) likely probably, apparently. c) evolve to develop gradually. d) guest a person invited to participate of a social event such as a party or dinner. e) treat entertainment, food, drink, etc, given away by compliment. f) profitable something that allows monetary gain. 3. How was the first ice cream made? Is it the same today? Emperor Nero had ice mixed with fruit toppings, while King Tang Shang in China had a method of creating milk and ice concoctions. The methods of making ice cream are completely different. Ice is not used in the preparations anymore. The mixture is iced afterwards. 4. In the beginning, was it a very popular kind of food? No, it was served in the royal courts. 5. How did the mechanical refrigeration help ice cream become more and more popular? It was easier to be distributed and sold.
3 6. Choose one of the ads and explain your choice. (Answers will vary.) 7. Create an ad for an ice cream. Use your imagination! (Answers will vary.)
