Kowledge of the seed ecolog of ivasive exotic species, icludig soil seedbak damics, is essetial to uderstadig ke factors i successful ivasio ad i idetifig maagemet opportuities. Africa Olive, Olea europaea L. subsp. cuspidata, is a exotic ivasive wood plat i Hawaii, Norfolk Islad ad easter Australia, ad is ow well established i the Cumberlad Plai regio of wester Sde, Australia. I the preset stud, the ke aspects of the seed ecolog of Africa Olive were determied for populatios i wester Sde. Extracted seed germiated at a wide rage of temperatures, cosistet with tolerace of a wide rage of climatic coditios. A seed-burial experimet idicated a slow decrease i viabilit dow to 70.3% durig the first ear, followed b a rapid declie dow to 14.7% i the secod ear. Probit aalsis idicated that uder field coditios, seed persistece i the soil was ~29 moths (2.4 ears). I situ germiatio was low (3.3%) ad did ot occur util the mechaical costrictio of the edocarp was released through decompositio. The wood seed edocarp was foud to be permeable to water, idicatig that phsical dormac was ot imposed b providig a barrier to water uptake. Withi its ivasive rage, Africa Olive produces abudat seed. However, the rapid loss of viabilit of soil stored seed results i a arrow widow of opportuit for germiatio. The short persistece of seed i the soil ma provide a opportuit for maagers to achieve cotrol of Africa Olive oce mature plats are removed." [Well cotrolled b herbicides? I fact, raifall for the previous two ears was also lower tha average. This lower raifall ma have icreased the effectiveess of the fire b reducig the abilit of small plats to resprout because of water stress." [Tolerates, or beefits from, mutilatio, cultivatio, or fire?
