2 Although the word Cocktail first appeared in the early 1800 s, cocktails really took off during the Prohibition era in the United States in the 1920 s. After Prohibition ended in 1933, Hollywood films gave cocktails a glamorous image and after WWII cocktail drinking was still seen as a mark of sophistication. In the 1970 s Vodka took over from Gin as the most popular spirit base for cocktails, which in turn gave rise to a vast array of new and exciting drinks. Cocktails, whether served at a dedicated cocktail party or as a precursor to an elegant meal or dinner date, lend an air of sophistication and glamour. There are thousands of different cocktails, some of which experience fleeting popularity before disappearing into obscurity, whilst others remain firm favourites for decades. Creme De Cassis topped with Chilled Champagne RHUBARB FIZZ 9.75 This is a delicately sweet and subtle combination currently taking top London bars by storm! Rhuby Rhubarb and Vanilla Liqueur topped with Chilled Champagne BELLINI 8 The Bellini was invented sometime between 1934 and 1948 by Giuseppe Cipriani, founder of Harry's Bar in Venice, Italy. White rum, strawberry puree, sugar and lime juice lovingly mixed with crushed ice COSMOPOLITAN This 1970 s favourite is a stylish pink concoction in a martini glass that made a resurgence being the signature cocktail in the 1990 s for Carrie Bradshaw and her "Sex and the City" friends Ketel One Citron Vodka shaken with Cointreau, lime juice and a dash of Cranberry juice OLD FASHIONED 8.75 The old fashioned was developed during the 19th Century and given its name in the 1880 s.
