4 Lemon Experiments Adult volunteer will: Get 1 packet for each student and 1 for themselves Get 1 lemon for their team Populate hypothesis sheet based on team inputs Work with team to test hypotheses Help students fill out their packets Ask team how they could reuse or recycle the lemon rind Ensure table is cleaned up and be ready to make lemonade. Lead the lemonade activity giving each student a role(s). Adult only will cut the lemon in half and handle the knife Materials Needed per team 1 lemon 1 pitcher 1 set dry measuring cups 1 juicer 1 liquid 2 cup measuring cup 1 cutting board 1 knife 1 digital scale* * Ideal to have 1 scale/team, but ok to have 1 scale shared by the class 4 apics.org/stem
5 Where Does Water Come From? Water Cycle: We use the Same Water Again & Again Ground Water Surface Water 5 apics.org/stem
6 Activity #2: How to Conduct the Experiments 1. Mass: Use a Digital scale & record weight (grams) 2. Sink or Float: Gently Drop entire lemon in a large measuring cup filled with enough water to fully submerge the lemon. Observe if the lemon sinks or floats. 3. Volume: Place the lemon in a large measuring cup and add enough water to cover up the lemon. Record the water level volume. Remove the lemon and measure the new, lower water level. Calculate the difference in water levels to determine the volume of the lemon. 4. Yield: Adult cuts lemon in half, manually extracts juice into a small measuring cup, and measures amount of juice with measuring spoon 5. 5 Senses: Adult cuts lemon rind into pieces and gives each child their own piece to investigate see, hear, taste, touch, smell. 6 apics.org/stem

Will the lemon sink or float in water? 3. Lemon volume: How much space does our lemon take up? (Show measuring cups as visual aids for guess: ¼ cup, ½ cup, ¾ cup, 1 cup) 4. 10 Making Lemonade STUDENT PACKET Materials/Ingredients we have sourced 2 quart pitcher Large spoon 1 cup lemon juice from concentrate 1 cup granulated sugar 6 and 1/2 cups cold water 1-2 cups ice cubes Lets MAKE our lemonade 1. Measure and pour 1 cup of granulated sugar into your 2 quart pitcher. 2. Shake the container of lemon juice concentrate so it is mixed up. Measure one cup of lemon juice concentrate, and pour it into the pitcher containing the sugar. 3. Measure 6 1/2 cups water. Add one cup at a time and mix thoroughly. 4. Add 1-2 cups of ice cubes and stir. 5. Clean up J and deliver lemonade to our team! 10 apics.org/stem
