For the past few years, the online world has been flooded with pictures of baths filled with colorful water and plenty of bubbles. Juicy orange, romantic purple, deep black or even magic rainbow water seemed to be created in Photoshop because it looked just too beautiful to be real. What was the secret? Bath bombs. What Is a Bath Bomb The bath bomb is basically a ball packed with fizzy ingredients, that will start to bubble when touched by water. The bath bomb can be any size and color, that depends only on your preferences and ingredients that you have. Once you put it in the water, the ingredients start reacting, creating foam and bubbles. Depending on what other ingredients you used to create your own bath bomb, they will be released into the water, nourishing and moisturizing your body. Although there are plenty of bath balls on the market, creating them in your own kitchen will give you peace of mind, that you know exactly what is in them. DIY Bath Bomb Recipes The base recipe for bath bombs is very simple and you can find the ingredients in almost any supermarket. Although a fizzy ball in your bath looks like a scientific experiment, you can easily make it yourself and even customize it by adding extra coloring and essential oils. What will you need for a homemade bath bomb? Ingredients For a Bath Bomb Base 2 cups of baking soda 1 cup of citric acid MediaFamily.org Copyright 2018, All Rights Reserved 1
1 cup of Epsom salt (it is also possible to add any bath salt that you have at home) 3 tablespoons coconut oil 2 tablespoons body butter (shea butter, cocoa butter or any butter that you have at home) You will need: A bowl for the dry ingredients A bowl for the wet ingredients A pan A spoon Bath bomb molds or silicone muffin forms How to make it: Put the body butter and the coconut oil in a pan. Warm it up on a small fire. Stir it every seconds. When the mixture is melted put it in one of the bowls. Put baking soda, citric acid, and Epsom salt (or any bath salt) in another bowl. Slowly add the melted oily ingredients to the dry ingredients, constantly stirring. When all ingredients are combined together, mix them for about 1 minute, until all the dry ingredients are wet. Voila! That is your base for a bath bomb. Thanks to this recipe you can enjoy a bath with fizzing bubbles. Would you like to customize your bath bombs a bit? You can add some of those ingredients to create a personal bath ball: 3-4 tablespoons of chosen essential oil (or a mixture of essential oils) Flower petals Glitter Non-toxic food coloring Homemade Bath Bomb Rose Garden The beautiful smell of fresh roses and rose petals floating around you. Doesn t it sound like a great plan for Saturday evening? A hot bath with a pink fizzy ball that reveals more and more rose petals as it melts will be an unforgettable experience of a home SPA. Rose scented oil is great for improving your mood and fighting anxiety. It is also great for irritated skin as it sedates inflammation and helps to heal processes. 3 2 cups of baking soda 1 cup of citric acid 1 cup of Epsom salt (it is also possible to add any bath salt that you have at home) 3 tablespoons of coconut oil 2 tablespoons body butter (shea butter, cocoa butter or any butter that you have at home) Dried rose petals Rose essential oil Food coloring You will need: A bowl for the dry ingredients A bowl for the wet ingredients A pan A spoon Bath bomb molds or silicone muffin forms How to make it: Put the body butter and the coconut oil in a pan. Warm it up on a small fire. Stir it every seconds. When the mixture is melted put it in one of the bowls. Add about 10 drops of rose essential oil. Add a few drops of food coloring (you can choose any color that you like, but pink will be just perfect!). Put baking soda, citric acid, and Epsom salt (or any bath salt) in another bowl. Slowly add the melted oily ingredients to the dry ingredients, constantly stirring. When all ingredients are combined together, mix them for about 1 minute, until all the dry ingredients are wet. You can add the rose petals to the moist mixture or put them in the middle of the ball while forming the bath bomb. If you choose the second option, you will create a secret chamber of rose petals that will appear after the bath bomb is melted. Put the moist mixture with rose petals in both halves of the molds or in the silicon muffin forms. If you are using the molds, put the halves together and close them tightly. If you chose the option with rose petals chamber, before closing the molds put a small handful of rose petals in the middle. Once the mixture is in the forms, put it aside in a colder place. Depending on their sizes, your bath bombs will be ready within 2-3 hours. MediaFamily.org Copyright 2018, All Rights Reserved 3

Put the body butter and the coconut oil in a pan. Warm it up on a small fire. Stir it every seconds. When the mixture is melted put it in one of the bowls. Add a bit of grapefruit and orange essential oils (about 5-6 drops per oil) and 2-3 drops of peppermint essential oil. Add a few drops of food coloring (you can choose any color that you like!). Put baking soda, citric acid, and Epsom salt (or any bath salt) in another bowl. Slowly add the melted oily ingredients to the dry ingredients, constantly stirring. When all ingredients are combined together, mix them for about 1 minute, until all the dry ingredients are wet. Add the orange zest and stir the mixture. Put the moist mixture in both halves of the molds or in the silicon muffin forms. If you are using the molds, put the halves together and close them tightly. Once the mixture is in the forms, put it aside in a colder place. Depending on their sizes, your bath bombs will be ready within 2-3 hours. Other recipes Depending on your mood and preferences you can create endless combinations of essential oils other extra ingredients, making your adventure with bath bombs a never-ending story. All you need to do is follow the instructions for any of the balls mentioned above, changing the chosen essential oils. If you prepare bath balls with dried flowers, fruit zest, or glitter, remember to carefully wash your bath after use to avoid clogging the drains. Is It Possible to Store Your Homemade Bath Bombs? The bath bombs do not have a specific expiration date, but that does not mean that they will stay good forever. The fresher they are, the better bubbles you get. A bath bomb made from baking soda and citric acid oxidizes, so the longer you keep it, the worst the results are. Fizzy bubbles and spreading colors are the fun part of using a bath bomb, so if you would like to enjoy this experience to the fullest, it is recommended to use your homemade balls short after making them. If you prefer to keep you bath balls or the batch you prepared is too big to use it within a reasonable amount of time, you can wrap the bombs in a paper and place them in a big metal or aluminum box. Store them in dry and cool places. MediaFamily.org Copyright 2018, All Rights Reserved 6
What Exactly Do You Put in Your Bath All ingredients of homemade bath bombs can be found in a traditional household. Two main ingredients of a bath bomb are baking soda and citric acid. When this mixture comes in contact with water, there is an acid-base reaction and the bath bomb releases carbon dioxide bubbles. To turn your homemade fizzy ball into a colorful rainbow you can use a food coloring. Few drops of essential oil will expand your bath experience with lovely smells. Rich oils moisture your skin and make it baby-soft. Every ingredient in a bath bomb is basically edible, but not in quantities that are used to make the balls. Since the bath bombs became popular, more and more companies have decided to create and sell them. It is good news for all the bath bombs enthusiasts, however, buying a fizzy ball from an unknown source can be a little bit tricky. After all, it is a product that will have access to your whole body for at least minutes. It is very important to choose a bath bomb from a reliable manufacturer or, even better, make it yourself. Only then you will know what sure what goes in your bath and therefore on your skin. Necessary Equipment for Making Bath Bombs Making your own bath bomb is not a very complicated process. All you need to have is the ingredients and bath bomb molds. There is plenty of various molds available. Depending on your preferences, you can choose a silicon, aluminum or a plastic mold. You can choose between many different shapes and sizes, so it is really up to you how your DIY bath bombs are going to look like. Of course, the bigger the bomb the longer it will bubble in your bath and the more nourishing oils it can release. If you do not want to buy special bath bomb molds, you can also use silicon muffin forms. They come in all sizes and shapes, so instead of a standard ball, your bath bombs can look like a delicious dessert! How to Prepare an Aromatherapy Bath One of the best benefits of a bath bomb is its smell. Of course, the colors look nice, when they spread and mix in the water, the bubbles are funny, and the whole experience is enjoyable. However, your sense of smell has a huge impact on your brain and a right combination of essential oils can calm your nerves, help you relax, energize you you name it. You can pick one main smell for the bath bomb or combine a few and create your own aroma. Benefits of aromatherapy are endless. You can try it and see on your own, how MediaFamily.org Copyright 2018, All Rights Reserved 7
smells and aromas work on you and your mind. There are plenty of essentials oils on the market, so it is helpful to know, what are they made for. Lavender Lavender is one of the most famous sleep helper. Lavender essential oil will help you reducing stress and anxiety. It helps to restore inner peace, improves your sleep pattern, reduced panic attacks and general nervous tension. The lavender scent is also great for sore muscles and joint pains. Soaking in a bath with a fizzy lavender ball will be a great evening treat, preparing you for bedtime. Lavender oil has an amazing impact on your body as well. Its strong antiseptic and antiinflammatory properties will soothe your skin. Lavender can be also helpful for headaches. Patchouli Patchouli is commonly used in candles, incent sticks and oil aromatherapy. Adding a few drops of patchouli essential oil to your homemade bath bomb be a great option, if you are suffering from stress, depression, and just overall tension. Patchouli oil has an amazing impact on many skin issues, such as scars, wrinkles, stretch marks and acne. It promotes cell regeneration and is recommended for people with problematic skin. Ylang Ylang Ylang Ylang essential oil will be a great choice for you if you feel stressed, overwhelmed and when your energy level is low. It will help you relax and upgrade your mood. Ylang Ylang smell is also known for its energetic properties, making it right ingredient if you want to take a bath before any social, family or work-related event. Ylang Ylang oil works really good for your skin too. It is recommended for normal to dry skin to keep it balanced and soothed. Bergamot If you need a quick pick-me-up smell, then bergamot essential oil will be perfect for you. Bergamot is famous as a natural anxiety remedy. It will restore your energy and make you feel refreshed and happy. A few drops of bergamot essential oil can also help improve your MediaFamily.org Copyright 2018, All Rights Reserved 8
blood circulation. Bergamot is also great for a general skin care. It can reduce pain, prevent infections and speed up healing process if you suffer from the irritated or burnt skin. Chamomile Commonly found in teas and skin care products, chamomile is an amazingly relaxing and soothing herb. Chamomile essential oil will help you wind down and prepare yourself for the nighttime. A homemade bath bomb infused with just a few drops of this fragrance can help you with sore muscles and PMS symptoms. Chamomile works great as a toner for balancing and soothing your skin. It prevents infections, helps with rashes and stings, and is known for its pain-relieving properties. Sandalwood Sandalwood essential oil has an amazing aroma of spices and treasure. Sandalwood is a natural aphrodisiac but it will work not only your libido. The oil is great for improving your mood and energy level. Oil made from sandalwood is anti-inflammatory and antiseptic. Just a few drops in your bath will soothe your skin. It is important to remember, that not every oil you will find on the market will be a real essential oil. For example, perfume oils may have an amazing smell of flowers or fruits but they will not bring you any of the benefits described above. When looking for a good essential oil, it is always better to go for the quality, not quantity. Instead of buying 20 cheap oils that have nothing in common with a real essential oil, buy just one or two of the best quality and see for yourself how your body and mind react to them. If you see a company selling plenty of different essential oils for the same price for each, do not buy anything. The price of an oil depends on the amount of raw material necessary to prepare the oil. If there is no difference in price, it probably means that aromas of those oils are synthetic. Store your oils in a cool, dark place. You should keep them in glass bottles, ideally made from brown or dark blue glass.
