1 FIRST ANNUAL BARLEYVINE GASTROPUB Homebrew Competition February 21, 2016 Hosted by: Barleyvine Gastropub 182 Main Street, Bristol, Ct Zok s Homebrewing Supplies 18 North Street, Willimantic, Ct The Competition at a Glance Barleyvine Gastropub and Zok s Homebrewing Supplies are proud to present Barleyvine Gastropub s First Annual Homebrew Competition. This event will be held on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at Barleyvine Gastropub, 182 Main Street, Bristol, Ct This competition will not be a sanctioned event, but the beers judged will reflect the categories described by the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP), available at bjcp.com. Only categories 1-23 will be accepted. There WILL NOT be mead or cider category entries accepted. ***An IMPORTANT NOTE; Homebrewers must enter their beers using the standard BJCP categories, designating the category and sub category entered by the appropriate numbers and letters. The organizing committee will then collapse all entries into five (5) distinct categories for judging purposes. The categories will be; Light Ale, Amber Ale, Dark Ale, Combined Lagers, and Specialty Beers. These five collapsed categories will incorporate all twenty three BJCP categories. *Ex. Dark Ales will incorporate Stouts, Porters and Scottish/Irish Ales, etc. Other collapsed groups will be similarly combined. Beers in these collapsed categories will be judged together, and the final result will reflect the individual merits of each beer. Though it may appear that we are judging apples and oranges collectively, the resulting winner of said category will stand out as a definitive beer in its style parameters. The competition organizers promise a professionally run competition with feedback for all entries. Brewers will receive comments on their beers from official BJCP score sheets filled out by judges recognized by the BJCP, professional brewers and novice judges under the direction of experienced BJCP judges who have volunteered their valuable time. Awards will be given to the first place winners in the five distinct categories. A Best Of Show winner will also be awarded by a special BOS panel. There will be a Cash Award for the BOS beer. We will also conduct a separate judging which is strictly for Novice Homebrewers who have entered their beers in any competition for the first time. This judging will be similar to a BOS panel, but the beers will not have to win their respective category in the regular competition to be included.

2 We feel this new award will prompt many new homebrewers to enter their beers into competition. A first place award will be given to the Novice winner. Competition Rules and Entry Information Anyone may enter. All entries must be brewed at home, not in a commercial operation. You may have been homebrewing for years but if you are entering a beer for the first time ever in a competition, please make a very visible note on the entry form to inform us that you are a Novice. Your beers will also be judged in a special Novice BOS panel. Entry fee is $8.00 per entry. Cash fee accepted, or checks made out to Barleyvines. Brewers are encouraged to enter more than one beer. There is no limit on the number of entries. A competition entry form must accompany each entry. You may list multiple entries on one sheet, but clearly define each s BJCP category and sub-category. Brewers must submit three bottles for each entry. Two may be entered, but the brewer must accept that he may not have an entry for BOS if a second bottle is needed for regular judging, (if he advances to that level or another bottle may be needed for the Novice round). Bottles must be between oz. with all labels removed. Caps must be plain or blacked out. Any exceptions should be brought to the attention of the competition coordinator (Zok ) BEFORE they are entered. *Swing top bottles will not be accepted, nor will corked bottles. The deadline for entries is no later than 3:00 pm, Saturday February 6, Beers received after this will not be judged, nor will they be returned to the brewer. Please call or for details. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS! Bottle label forms must be attached to each bottle with a rubber band. NO TAPE, please. Recipes are not necessary, but the competition organizer reserves the right to request a recipe after the competition. A competition entry form must accompany each entry. Multiple entries may be listed on one sheet. Please include a self addressed stamped envelope to insure rapid return of judging results.

3 Awards not given to the recipients on the day of competition will be mailed. They also may be picked up at Barleyvine s. Categories will be collapsed or expanded as necessary with determinations decided by the competition organizers. See above. We will be using BJCP style guidelines. Specific style guidelines are available on the internet at the AHA site at beertown.org or bjcp.org Entries may be sent or dropped off at multiple locations. (See following for addresses) For details see or Judges and Stewards Judges and Stewards are needed for the competition. If you are BJCP certified, a professional brewer, or have experience in judging and wish to join us that day, please call to register to judge. Competitions can only function well with participation of qualified judges. To ensure a successful competition, this event depends on your cooperation. If you are interested in stewarding, please contact Zok at to register. PLEASE DO NOT SHOW UP THE DAY OF THE COMPETITION TO STEWARD UNLESS YOU HAVE REGISTERED WITH ZOK. Judges and Stewards must report to the judging site no later than 9:00 am. JUDGING WILL START PROMPTLY AT 9:30 AM. ****THE PUBLIC IS NOT INVITED TO VIEW THE JUDGING PROCESS BUT MAY ATTEND THE BEST OF SHOW ROUND AND AWARDS CEREMONY An awards ceremony will follow the judging. (Approx. 4:00-5:00 pm). We appreciate and thank the professional brewers who can attend to act as judges. Most, if not all were once homebrewers who took the chance, and went pro. Morning coffee, bagels and doughnuts will be provided for the judges and stewards. There will also be a special mid-day lunch prepared by the staff of Barleyvine Gastropub.
