What are we gonna do? Intro: what are the SDG s Warming up Fair Trade and the SDG s: what is the link? The game is on More Fair Trade Towns thanks to the SDG s
Warming-up True or False?
Statement 1 1 out of ten people make less than 1,9$ a day.
Statement 2 3 out of 4 of the poorest people on earth depend on small farm agriculture
Statement 3 Treatable diseases, such as malaria and aids are the largest cause of death in the world
Statement 4 Only one third of our global water supply is drinkable
Statement 5 All these products are made by one company

Statement 6 The number of kids not getting basic education has dropped by almost half since 2000
Statement 7 1 out every 4 children (4 15 years) in the least developed countries are involved in child labour, with detrimental effects on their education or health.
Statement 8 The eight richest people own the same amount of money as the poorest three and a half billion people on earth
Statement 9 14% of all products that are bought in the EU are bought by governments
Statement 10 A steak of 300 grams needs liter of water to produce, that is 135 baths.
Statement 11 We can avoid major impact of climate change if we stop all carbon exhaust by human society today
Statement 12 Donald Trump pulled the USA out of the SDG framework because he thought it was unfair to the American economy
Fair Trade and the Sustainable Development Goals 1. Like a horse and carriage 2. The game is on 3. More FairTradeTowns thanks to Fair Trade
Fair Trade and the Sustainable Development Goals 1. Like a horse and carriage MDG vs SDG Universal Partnership People AND Planet SDG s and Fair Trade go together well
Fair Trade and the Sustainable Development Goals 1. Like a horse and carriage SDG 1 No poverty SDG 2 No hunger SDG 5 Gender equality SDG 8 Decent work and economic growth SDG 10 reduced inequalities SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and production SDG 13 Climate Action SDG 16 Peace, Justice and strong institutions SDG 17 Partnership SDG 11 Sustainable cities and communities
People: 70% of the poorest people are small farmers and marginalized producers Prosperity: if the poorest increase their income the economy will grow in a sustainable way (you can only buy so many yachts) Peace: give people an opportunity to escape violence by selling their products at a fair price Partnership: bring civil society, government and business together Planet: fair trade works in a economical, social and ecologically sustainable way
Fair Trade and the Sustainable Development Goals 2. The game is on X times two teams (depending on number of participants) One team defends the statement, the other team opposes 15 minutes to prepare the arguments with the team 1 person represents the group 3 minutes to present the case to the whole group Discussion afterwards
Fair Trade and the Sustainable Development Goals 2. The game is on Farmers in the North should have a place in the Fair Trade system
Fair Trade and the Sustainable Development Goals 2. The game is on Fair Trade must focus on the social and economical aspect of sustainability (livelihoods, income, health-care ), ecological sustainability on the other hand is not our focus and is covered by other movements
Fair Trade and the Sustainable Development Goals 3. Getting more FairTradeTowns on board
Fair Trade and the Sustainable Development Goals 3. Getting more FairTradeTowns on board Why is FairTradeTowns an ideal tool for local officials to localize the SDG s in their town? -> Public procurement -> Local economic development -> International cooperation -> awareness raising -> multistakeholder engagement -> Concrete action
Fair Trade and the Sustainable Development Goals 3. Getting more FairTradeTowns on board What are our next steps?
