OBJECTIVES: After completing this chapter, you will be able to... Discuss the purpose of a percolation test. List the regulatory requirements for conducting a percolation test. Revised MEETING THE CERTIFICATION, TRAINING, AND RESOURCE NEEDS OF PENNSYLVANIA S SEWAGE ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS
Percolation Testing The local agency SEO must be familiar with the requirements for preparing and conducting percolation tests. The standards for percolation testing are presented in Title 25, Chapter PURPOSE OF PERCOLATION TESTING Percolation testing is a standard procedure used to measure the permeability of soil within a proposed absorption area. The test has two purposes: 1) establish site suitability 2) determine the required size of the absorption area for most conventional systems A percolation test is conducted within a proposed absorption area. The percolation rate (expressed in units of minutes/inch) will establish the minimum absorption area requirements, as specifi ed in Table A of Chapter Go to Chapter 7 Resources to obtain a copy of Table A. MEETING THE CERTIFICATION, TRAINING, AND RESOURCE NEEDS OF PENNSYLVANIA S SEWAGE ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS
Percolation Testing PERCOLATION TEST RESULTS A percolation test is always required when a conventional absorption area is proposed. The test results are used to size an in-ground installation, such as a bed or trench system, and an elevated sand mound system. An IRSIS does not require a percolation test. In addition, percolation testing may be used to determine the total absorption area size of alternate systems, such as the at-grade absorption area or a steep slope elevated sand mound bed. For absorption area sites with limiting zone depths of less than 20 inches, a percolation test is not used. In these cases, a soil morphological assessment is required. Chapter 9 presents the standards for a soil scientist to provide a morphological assessment. The soil scientist s report is often used to establish site suitability for alternate system proposals. MEETING THE CERTIFICATION, TRAINING, AND RESOURCE NEEDS OF PENNSYLVANIA S SEWAGE ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS
Percolation Holes PERCOLATION TEST HOLE PREPARATION The SEO must be certain that the percolation test is conducted according to the provisions of Title 25, Chapter The local agency may also have standard procedures, established by policy or ordinance, governing the preparation of the test holes. According to Chapter 72.42(2)(iii), the applicant must have the percolation test site prepared according to the written instructions provided by the SEO. In most cases, the individual test holes are prepared by the property owner or applicant, the backhoe operator, or a separate contractor. The SEO s responsibility is to confirm that the test holes are properly prepared in accordance with Chapter 73. The local agency SEO may run the test or supervise the testing in a manner approved by DEP. A percolation test hole is dug with the help of a post-hole digger. MEETING THE CERTIFICATION, TRAINING, AND RESOURCE NEEDS OF PENNSYLVANIA S SEWAGE ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS
Percolation Holes TEST HOLE LOCATION Title 25, Section All individual percolation test holes must be uniformly spaced within the proposed absorption area of an onlot system. Actual dimensions will vary, according to the type of absorption area that may be considered. Go to Chapter 7 Workbook to complete the following exercise: EXERCISE 7-1: Percolation Test Hole Locations TEST HOLE DEPTH Test holes are dug 12 to 36 inches deep and 6 to 10 inches wide. The depth of the holes is determined by the following factors: Percolation test holes must be uniformly spaced within a proposed absorption area. 1) Proposed depth of absorption area 2) Limiting zone depth 3) Type of limiting zone MEETING THE CERTIFICATION, TRAINING, AND RESOURCE NEEDS OF PENNSYLVANIA S SEWAGE ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS
Percolation Holes TOTAL REQUIRED TEST HOLES Chapter 73.15(1) specifi es, Six or more tests shall be made in separate test holes. Section 73.15(2) specifi es, Holes located within the proposed absorption area shall be used in the calculation. The determination of a percolation rate is based on the average of six or more percolation test hole rates. The holes must be spaced uniformly over the absorption area. If the SEO begins a six-hole test and cannot use one hole because it had too fast a rate, the site now has an insuffi cient number of holes for calculating the average. An additional hole is required. Fast or Dry Holes Holes with 6 inches of water that drain in exactly 10 minutes have a calculated rate of 1.7 minutes per inch. This is a measurable rate. Holes that drain more than 6 inches of water in less than 10 minutes exhibit drainage rates greater than 1.7 minutes per inch and are considered dry holes. When a third or more of the holes are fast (dry) holes, the proposed absorption area location must be moved away from this area. Additional percolation testing is necessary to determine an average percolation rate and justify this new location. MEETING THE CERTIFICATION, TRAINING, AND RESOURCE NEEDS OF PENNSYLVANIA S SEWAGE ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS
Percolation Test After a minimum of six holes have been dug uniformly over the area of the proposed absorption fi eld, the percolation test continues with the following steps: 1) The soil in the holes is presoaked before the actual test to approximate normal wet weather or in-use soil conditions. An initial and fi nal presoak is performed. 2) After the presoaks are completed, the holes are fi lled with approximately 6 inches of water, and the water level drop is measured and recorded on a percolation form over defi ned intervals (either 10 or 30 minutes as determined by the presoaks). After each reading, the hole is refi lled with water, and the process is repeated. 3) Readings continue until a hole has stabilized, which means the difference between the highest and lowest reading is not more than ¼ of an inch in any four consecutive readings. If the hole does not stabilize in any four consecutive readings, then the eighth reading becomes the stabilized reading. 4) From the stabilized readings, an average percolation rate for all the holes, expressed in minutes per inch, is calculated. This rate will help to determine the type and size of the absorption area for a proposed site. For the initial presoak, the hole is filled with water to a minimum depth of 12 inches over sand or fine aggregate and allowed to stand undisturbed for 8 to 24 hours. For the final presoak, which is started 60 minutes prior to beginning the percolation test, the holes are filled with water and allowed to stand for 30 minutes. Then, they are refilled and allowed to stand for another 30 minutes. If water remains in the hole at the end of this second period, the hole is tested at 30-minute increments during the percolation test. If there is no water remaining in the hole at the end of the final presoak, the hole is tested with 10-minute readings. MEETING THE CERTIFICATION, TRAINING, AND RESOURCE NEEDS OF PENNSYLVANIA S SEWAGE ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS
Percolation Test Go to Chapter 7 Workbook to complete the following exercise: EXERCISE 7-2: Percolation Test Regulations Review THE ROUNDING RULE Decimal numbers of.1 to.4 are rounded down to the nearest whole number. Decimal numbers of.5 to.9 are rounded up to the nearest whole number. Examples: 90.3 should be recorded as should be recorded as 91. When reporting percolation rates, be careful not to round to whole numbers whenever critical values associated with Table A are approached. For instance, if an average percolation rate of is measured, the site is unsuitable since the rate is greater than the 180 minutes per inch maximum allowable percolation rate. In this case, you cannot round down to 180. MEETING THE CERTIFICATION, TRAINING, AND RESOURCE NEEDS OF PENNSYLVANIA S SEWAGE ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS
Percolation Testing ACCURACY AND COMPLETENESS The SEO must always review the percolation test form for accuracy and completeness. Whether the local agency SEO personally conducts the percolation testing or observes someone else doing the test, all test hole data must be accurately measured. The percolation test report form must be completed properly and then signed by the SEO. Go to Chapter 7 Workbook to complete the following exercise: EXERCISE 7-3: Percolation Test Data Review SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES FOR A PERCOLATION TEST Sometimes, the percolation test will result in special circumstances that the SEO must know how to address. What if... Then... The percolation rate is too The rate of 240 min./inch is assigned the hole. slow to obtain a measurable rate at the end of the reading. The hole empties out within The hole is recorded as no measurable rate and 10 minutes. cannot be incorporated into the average percolation rate. MEETING THE CERTIFICATION, TRAINING, AND RESOURCE NEEDS OF PENNSYLVANIA S SEWAGE ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS
Percolation Testing Summary The local agency SEO must be sure that the percolation test site is properly prepared, and the test must be conducted according to the regulatory standards. The SEO should always address the following while performing or verifying a percolation test: Know the regulations. Confi rm the test holes are properly located. Be sure the holes were prepared properly. Always measure readings and calculate the percolation rate accurately. Review all data and calculations. Percolation testing is an important measure of the soil s permeability. Failure to properly measure this rate could result in the surface ponding of effluent at sites that become hydraulically overloaded. MEETING THE CERTIFICATION, TRAINING, AND RESOURCE NEEDS OF PENNSYLVANIA S SEWAGE ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS
KEY POINTS: Percolation holes must be evenly spaced throughout the proposed absorption area. The SEO must provide written instructions on site preparation for probe and percolation testing. Percolation holes must be properly prepared and presoaked. Testing must be conducted in accordance with the regulations and the policy of the local agency. Go to the #611 Chapter 7 materials to print and complete the Chapter 7 Quiz. This quiz was designed to check your understanding of the chapter materials.
