1 Religion and Life - Year 8 ISBL Active Citizenship - Fairtrade KEYS SKILLS: Learning about and from different people Research important information Interpret information found Use numeracy skills Self evaluate and write a personal reflection LEARNING OBJECTIVES: To understand what Fairtrade is To demonstrate skills of negotiation and persuasion in preparing a campaign for change To evaluate and reflect on the skills gained during the homework project This project is equal to five weeks worth of homework and so you are expected to spend 6-10 hours on it in total. This project is to be done by yourself although you can ask your parents and teachers for help. Your tasks have been set out to include: 1. Planning and research 2. Using ICT, Computers and the Internet 3. Working independently The project must be completed on the computer. Printed off and handed in to your teach in the agreed due date. Failure to do this will result in a Faculty detention and a letter written home to your parents. 1

2 Week 1 Time Spent 1-2 hours Fairtrade Shopping Buying Fairtrade products is a great way to support producers in developing countries. Fairtrade helps workers and farmers to earn a decent living and secure a better life for themselves and their families. Task: Visit your local supermarket and investigate the Fairtrade products sold there. A) Locate the Fairtrade products from the list below in the supermarket look for the Fairtrade logo. Bananas Chocolate Coffee Sugar Ice cream (Ben and Jerry s is Fairtrade) B) Take note of the price of the Fairtrade product C) Take note of the price of the non Fairtrade product D) Calculate the difference Use a chart like this to help you organise your findings. You can show it to your family, friends, or even your form class. This should be a different person than the person you gave your poster or leaflet to. REMEMBER...EVEN IF EVERY STUDENT IN Y8 RAISES AWARENESS OF FAIRTRADE IN ONE PERSON EACH, WE WILL HAVE SUCCEEDED!! 6
