2 HOW YOUR ACTIONS MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO FAIRTRADE FARMERS Millions of farmers who produce the food we eat don t earn enough to feed their own families. You can help change this. Fairtrade means better prices, decent working conditions and a fairer deal for farmers and workers. When you choose Fairtrade, you Stand 4 Fairness. We will go very far together with Fairtrade. Rose is a coffee farmer and board member of the Gikanda Farmers Cooperative Society in Kenya. Fairtrade-run training has helped Gikanda s coffee sales increase yearly and the Fairtrade Premium has funded renovations at the local primary school, books for the high school and a local healthcare centre.

3 felice I planted two hectares of cocoa plants to increase my income and enable my four children to go to school and have better opportunities in life. We still need a truck to get the cocoa from our fields. At the moment, I carry all the cocoa on my head after the harvest. Felice, 33, grows cocoa in Côte d Ivoire. He s part of the Kapatchiva cooperative made up of 567 members in five communities, which all benefit from the Fairtrade Premium. harniti I d like to see more people buy our coffee so that I can earn more money to send my children to university. Coffee producer Harniti is a member of the Koptan Gayo Megah Berseri cooperative in Indonesia. Fairtrade certified since 2012, the cooperative uses its Fairtrade Premium to train farmers to produce more coffee cherries of better quality. They also invest in grass trimmers, safety boots and coffee seedlings for each member.

5 TALKING TO PEOPLE ABOUT FAIRTRADE Fairtrade means better prices, decent working conditions and a fairer deal for farmers and workers. First, there s the Fairtrade Minimum Price. It s not only a safety net when market prices drop, it provides a more predictable income for farmers. Then there s the Fairtrade Premium, a payment farmers can invest in community and business initiatives such as farmer training, building schools, providing healthcare or protecting the environment. Fairtrade is empowering millions of farmers and workers to fight for a fairer deal, earn their way out of poverty and transform their communities. Farmers co-own Fairtrade, which means their voices are always heard. There are still millions more farmers trapped in a system that rips them off. That s why we need more people like you to choose Fairtrade. More than 1.6 million farmers and workers in 73 countries are now part of Fairtrade. There are more than 2000 Fairtrade Towns, Cities, Villages and other communities across 33 countries, and tens of thousands of activists, campaigners and consumers in the global Fairtrade movement. Consumers spent 7.88 billion on Fairtrade products globally in 2016 up 30 percent from 2015.

6 MORE IDEAS AND INSPIRATION There are many ways to get involved in the World Fairtrade Challenge from organising a work or community event to simply having a chat with friends about Fairtrade and sharing some Fairtrade products. Whatever you do, you ll be showing the world that you Stand 4 Fairness. on the go By handing out Fairtrade products at busy places like train stations, you can give people a snack on the go and raise awareness of how Fairtrade helps farmers fight for a fairer deal. Get people involved in the social side too ask them to pose for pictures making the shape of a 4 as they #stand4fairness. and dance Organise a night of music and dancing for Fairtrade and invite your friends, family and neighbours to Stand 4 Fairness. Put on a buffet of Fairtrade food and drinks. Make sure you ve got the camera ready 4 some posing #stand4fairness. online Create a storm on social media. As part of your event, get your guests involved in our online challenge. Here are some ideas and inspiration to get your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours involved in World Fairtrade Challenge at work Organize a Fairtrade event with colleagues. Whether it s a communal lunch made with Fairtrade products or a quick Fairtrade tea or coffee break, it s the perfect opportunity to get people talking about the difference choosing Fairtrade makes to farmers and their communities. at home Invite your friends and loved ones to Stand 4 Fairness by hosting a Fairtrade event at home. You could cook a five-star meal with all that Fairtrade has to offer, or simply serve Fairtrade coffee and cookies. at your place of worship Talk about the impact of Fairtrade on farmers and workers and their communities in sermons or discussions. Hold a Fairtrade coffee break after your service, or join a Stand 4 Fairness event in your community. in school Arrange a talk and activities for students about how Fairtrade makes a difference to farmers and workers in developing countries. Set up a stand with Fairtrade treats for students and teachers. Ask them to write to or tweet local supermarkets suggesting they stock more Fairtrade products.
