7 Improving Sugarcane Cultivation in India SSI Manual has been produced as a part of the ICRISAT WWF project Producing More Food Grain with Less Water Promoting farm based methods to improve the water productivity SSI is an alternate to conventional seed, water and space intensive sugarcane cultivation. Wider spacing drastically reduces the seed requirement from 48,000 buds to 5,000 buds per acre. Gradual switching from inorganic to organic method will bring long term benefits to farmers. 10 farmer's spot Onions usually make a person cry when he or she cuts them but these very vegetables seem to be an index of joy for the farmers. They are hopeful of a profitable harvest this year as the demand for onions has increased in the market. Onion cultivation is a seasonal choice of occupation for farmers of south India as October to November provide favourable climate for them. Here one of the farmer sharing his experience with us. My name is Maayan a sugarcane farmer, for the past few years i have been practicing intercropping method of cultivation with various combination of crops which result in more profit.after cultivating sugarcane i found there is more space water so i plannned to cultivate a crop which can be harvested within short period of time. I am Getting more profit by practicing intercropping onion in sugarcane rather than cultivating onion and sugarcane seperately. The Profit percentage per acre is increased without any damage for both the crops. Around 5 1/2 feet gap between sugarcane rows mostly unutilized and more water is occupying. To overcome this i have cultivated onion in sugarcane after 25 days of sugarcane cultivated. It will take quite long period of time for sugarcane to grow in the meanwhile onion can be cultivated and harvested within the period of 70 days. 15 The Power generation plant We have 23 MHz Power Generation Plant in that 5MHz are utilized for own use and the remaining 18MHz are given to Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. Our power plant will be in a working process for a period of 11 months in a year. Power generation plant has a capacity to produce 23,000 unit per hour. By doing cultivation gives me more satisfication than any other work but now a days I am finding difficult to cultivate any crop in 12 acres of land due to less man power. I am in dilemma whether to continue cultivation or not at that time DS Sugars has been constructed near to our village which has been a great support for cultivating sugarcane.
