3 Reasons for Exploration You need a blank sheet of paper! With your partner, write as many reasons as you can think of that someone would explore/migrate to another country and even cross a vast ocean to do so. Use the main categories God, Gold, Glory Place each of your reasons/strips under the category that you believe it goes under.

4 Sea Route to Asia in Search of There is no flavor. There are no spices.

5 Spices In the 1400 s there was no refrigeration. To prevent meat from spoiling, people drowned their meat in salt to preserve and dry it (like beef jerky). They also used a lot of spices like pepper to cover up the taste of the salted or spoiled meat.

6 Europe was bland Spices did not grow anywhere in Europe! Spices were only found in Asian countries like China, Japan, and India (these countries were known as The Indies ).

7 Spices were valuable Spices were brought across thousands of miles of dangerous mountains and deserts by spice traders who could be robbed or killed by bandits. Ships were faster but storms and pirates posed a danger.

10 Gold, Silver, and Precious Stones Europe had fought in many wars and needed money to pay their debts. Europeans believed that Asia was loaded with gold, silver, and precious stones which they wanted to find and bring back.

11 Larger Empires European rulers wanted to claim as much land as they could. Colonize and spread their traditions and beliefs. Take the natural resources from the land and use the native people to do the work for them.

12 This map shows what Martin Behaim believed lay to the west of Europe. Behaim was a German mapmaker who created a globe of the world in His is the oldest surviving globe. Behaim assumed that sailing westward on the Atlantic Ocean would take the traveler to Cipangu (Japan) and Cathay (China). He had no idea of the Pacific Ocean. On this map you can see the outline of what the traveler would actually find =North & South America.

13 Expand their Knowledge In the late 1400 s Europeans did not know much about the world. Most had never been outside of Europe. Although many people thought the world was flat, educated Europeans knew that it was round. They had no idea how BIG the world really was.
