1 Homework week of 11/28-12/2 Due on 12/2 Name Class Parent Signature Meet the Puffer Fish! Puffer fish live in shallow fresh water and salt water all around the world, usually near the shore. They have no scales and can puff up to two and three times their normal size by quickly drinking huge amounts of water. Not all types of puffer fish have spikes. However, all of them have sharp teeth and fins, and all are really poisonous. If another sea creature manages to eat a puffer fish, the creature will be sorry. Because of the poison, the puffer fish tastes terrible and the creature will most likely die from poisoning. Strangely, the meat from puffer fish is a treat to many people in Japan and Korea. An expert cuts away the poisonous parts, and restaurants serve what is left at a very high price. Eating puffer fish is risky because if the meat isn t cut correctly, it's poisonous to humans. 1. A puffer fish would most likely puff up because it is A. scared. B. funny. C. crazy. D. happy. 2. Puffer fish is expensive for humans to eat because they A. are made from pure gold nuggets. B. have to be cut by a real expert. C. taste better than any other food. D. swim better than most other fish.

2 3. What is the best thing people could do to stay away from a puffer's poison? A. Don't eat any seafood. B. Cut the fish themselves. C. Only eat fruit and bread. D. Never eat puffer fish. 4. This passage would most likely be found in a book titled A. Cuddly Sea Critters. B. Man-Eating Fish. C. Deadly Marine Life. D. Fish with Scales. 5. If the meat is cut incorrectly, someone could guess that A. the puffer probably isn't that poisonous. B. the person eating it won't be poisoned. C. the cook didn't cook the meat very well. D. an expert wasn't hired to cut the puffer. Camels Camels are mostly found in the deserts of northern Africa and the Middle East. All camels have humps. However, some camels have more than one hump. A camel stores food in its hump or humps in the form of fat. If camels get food, they can live without water for many months. When water is available, they can drink almost 30 gallons in less than 15 minutes. They have big and sturdy lips, which help them to eat thorny plants. Because of these features, which help them survive in the desert, the camel is called "the ship of desert." 6. This passage would most likely be found in a book called A. The Many Types of Camels B. Northern Africa and the Middle East C. Lack of Water in Deserts D. Desert Animal Survival Strategies

3 7. Camels most likely use their humps to store food because A. it helps to keep the hump upright and in shape. B. it is a safe place to store food. C. it protects the food from heat and dust of the desert. D. it can be hard to find food in the desert. 8. A person would most likely read this passage if he or she were interested in A. studying the survival methods of different desert animals. B. learning about how desert people live. C. making a trip to a place where camels are found. D. knowing the types of plants found in deserts. Repeat until your circle is covered. Use mostly green and sprinkle red here and there. Also, remember not to cover the punched holes. 8. After the wreath has dried, put the ends of the ribbon through the holes in the back, and make a bow in the front. 9. Someone would most likely hang this wreath inside because A. the wreath is made from paper. B. the wreath is much prettier inside. C. too many decorations are outside. D. birds might eat the fake berries. 10. In step 7, why does the author most likely say, "Use mostly green and sprinkle red here and there"? Records and Tapes The high-quality sound of CDs and ipods wasn t always around. In 1930, records and record players went on the market, but they were very costly. Records were originally made of wax, and wax was soon replaced with vinyl for better sound quality. The sound came from bumps in the grooves of the wax or vinyl. Players came complete with a turntable to spin the record, and an arm with a needle was attached near the turntable. The needle had to go through the grooves to play the recording. Unfortunately, records were easily scratched by the needle. Records were also destroyed by heat because vinyl and wax can melt. Cassette tapes were introduced in the 1960s and became a popular way to listen by the 1980s. People didn t have to be as careful with tapes, and the sound quality was better. Music was recorded on a magnetic reel of tape and placed in a small plastic case. A tape was read by a cassette player from the opening at the bottom of the tape.

7 However, many players had a bad habit of eating the precious reel and ruining the tape. To try to keep this from happening, most people cleaned their cassette players with Q- tips dipped in rubbing alcohol. 17. This passage would most likely be found in a book titled A. The History of Cassettes and Players. B. Listening to Music in the 20th Century. C. The History of Vinyl and Wax Records. D. Q-tips Clean More than Just Ear Wax. 18. Who would most likely be interested in recording sound? A. musician B. hairdresser C. mechanic D. dancer
