3 Chapter 8 Summary At school At the library, Reuven and Danny have a discussion on the third floor Danny was reading at the library, Graetz, about Dov Baer(invented the idea of a tzaddik) Graetz called Hasidism vulgar and disgusting, Danny trusts Graetz Danny was teaching himself German to read Freud Danny is nervous at library David Malter nervous about recommendations Reuven goes to Reb Saunders house, tells him about reading at library Goes home and tells father about discussion with Saunders

4 Reuven at School When Reuven returns to school, his friends now look at Reuven as a superhero. Reuven s friends were bad mouth Danny and Reuven doesn t say anything. Sidney Goldberg and Davey Cantor were talking about the game and it was irritating Reuven ---> saw his friends as childish and got angry with Davey After school, Reuven went to the library to see Danny

5 The Public Library Described with descriptive detail: The library was a huge, three story, graystone building, with thick Ionic columns, and with the words BEAUTY IS TRUTH, TRUTH BEAUTY, THAT IS ALL YE KNOW ON EARTH, AND ALL YE NEED TO KNOW----JOHN KEATS...

6 Eye/Vision The painting of Homer has symbolism: - eyes are glossed over = blind and Reuven never saw this before After Reuven s accident, his attention to detail has increased -in the last chapters (the hydrangea bush, his room, his house, the world in general) -In this chapter(painting and the library s features)

7 At the Library Why is Danny so upset? What book did he read that upset him? Who can describe the story that Danny read? What language is Danny learning? Why?

8 The Moment When Reb Saunders tells Reuven about him knowing about Danny at the public library and his father recommending books to him - Reb Saunders is concerned for his son and doesn t want Reuven and his father to pick out books that would alter his future. -Reb Saunders can t talk to his son about this and Danny can t talk to his father about this -Saunders regrets the Master of the Universe for making his son too brilliant

9 Chapter 9 Finals are over and school is out for the summer - Reuven goes to Dr. Snydman after school and finds out his eye has healed correctly and the scar tissue will not go over his pupil Reuven calls Mr. Merrit, who is Billy s father, to see how Billy s eye surgery went - Finds out the surgery was unsuccessful and that the Merrit s are moving to Albany due to Billy s dad s job transfer Reuven, the spider and the fly - Reuven saves a housefly from a spider web (this part also has another meaning)

10 The Spider and the Fly When you read the book did you notice the author s analogy? Who does the spider represent? Who does the fly represent? How does this relate to their relationship? Foreshadow what s to come?
