1 100th Hurst Horticultural Show on the 17 th August 2013 to be held at: Hurst Village Halls, School Road, Hurst, RG10 0DR How to enter an exhibit Simply select the Horticultural and Home Industries classes you want to enter from the list in this document. Then complete the entry form in the printed schedule, or downloaded from the website, and send it with the entry fees to the addresses indicated on the form. Entries fees are 50p each for the first 10 classes then free thereafter (i.e. maximum cost is 5.00 for as many classes as you wish). Children s Classes There are classes in Home Industries specifically for children divided into the following age groups: under 5 years old 5 to 7 years old 8 to 11 years old all aged 15 and under All children s classes receive cash prizes for the first three places and prize money has been increased this year see below for details. The painting classes 107, 109, and 112 will receive additional prize money as the result of a private donation to encourage children s art. Of course, children may enter any of the open classes. The Hurst Horticultural Show is organised by the Hurst Horticultural & Cottage Garden Society which is affiliated to The Royal Horticultural Society 7.00pm - Deadline for entries 7:00am 10:30am 1:30pm 3:00pm 4:00pm 4:30pm 4:45pm Halls open for staging of entries Halls closed for judging Show open to all Prize Giving Start removal of exhibits Deadline for removal of exhibits Auction of remaining exhibits Dogs are not allowed in the exhibition halls, however, well behaved ones are welcome outside. Winning Prize Money, a Certificate or a Cup Prize money for the children s classes ( ) is 3 for first, 2 for second and 1 for third, except for the painting classes 107, 109, and 112. For these three classes additional prize money has been donated to increase the prizes to 8 for first, 5 for second and 3 for third. No prize money is given to open classes. All classes will receive certificates for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places, and children s entries will receive special Centenary Certificates to celebrate the Show s 100 th year. Cups are given to either: 1) winners of some selected classes; 2) exhibitors with the most points in a group of classes; or 3) judge s choice. 2 List of Classes Note: The symbol indicates a cup is awarded to the section or class winner; and classes in bold type earn additional trophy points - see rule 13. Horticultural Classes (1-77): Flowers - David Machin Cup 1 Vase of flowers - 1 kind, mixed colours allowed 2 2 Vases of flowers - distinct kind in each vase, mixed colours allowed 3 Vase of mixed flowers - arranged for effect 4 Rose - 1 bloom 5 Roses - 1 bowl, six blooms of not less than three varieties own foliage only 6 Roses - Floribunda or Clustered - 1 vase of 2 stems 7 Roses - Cycle of Bloom, 1 bud in colour, 1 bloom and 1 full blown flower, all of the same variety 8 1 Specimen Bloom, excluding roses 9 1 Specimen Spike, e.g. Gladiolus, Delphinium, etc. 10 Gladioli - 1 vase of 3 spikes 11 Any other Annual - 5 blooms raised from seed during 12 months preceding the show, mixed types & colours permitted. 12 Dahlias - 1 vase of 3 Decorative blooms, mixed colours allowed 13 Dahlias - 1 vase of 3 Cactus or Semi-cactus blooms, mixed colours allowed 14 Dahlias - 1 vase of 5 Ball blooms, mixed colours allowed 15 Dahlias - 1 vase of 5 blooms any other type, e.g.: orchid, water lily, or pom-pom, mixed types and colours allowed 16 Dahlias - Three vases as follows: 3 Decorative blooms 3 Cactus or semi-cactus blooms and 3 Ball Blooms, or 5 Pom-Pom blooms not exceeding 2" diameter 17 5 Individual Fuchsia Flower Blooms (to be displayed in the phials provided on the day) 18 5 Individual Pansies and/or Viola flower blooms, mixed kinds allowed. (This class will be displayed in individual alcoves - 60cm wide x 60cm high) 83 Novices Only - An informal mug of flowers; max. overall size 45cm (entry restricted to entrants who have not previously won any flower arranging category at any show) Cooking All entries must be covered in cling film Eclairs 85 4 millionaires shortcake biscuits 86 Tart to a given recipe - see below 87 Decorated sponge cake celebrating 100 years to be judged only on decoration 88 Focaccia bread 89 A chocolaty chocolate cake 90 A cold summer soup 91 Men Only - Apple Flan Preserves All preserves should be in plain jars, labelled with date and contents, sealed with a twist top or a wax disc and cellophane. Art (Excludes Photography) All paintings and drawings must be mounted, unframed and anonymous. 123 A local landmark any medium 124 Fur or Feather - any medium 125 A black and white drawing to amuse Young at Heart - George Jones Cup (Ages years) 126 Your own birds nest ; max. overall size 45cm 127 A centenary birthday card 128 A decorated hat 129 Frauds Cookery Class: Carrot Cake mix - packet to be displayed Recipe for Class 86 - Bakewell Tart Pre-heat oven, containing a flat baking tray, to 200 o C. Pastry 175g plain flour, 2tbsps caster sugar, 115g unsalted butter, 1 egg yolk, mixed with 2-3tbsps water. Make pastry by rubbing butter into flour. Add sugar. Mix in egg mixture to make dough. Chill, then roll out to line a 22cm flan tin. Prick base. Topping 100g softened unsalted butter, 2 eggs, 100g caster sugar,, 40g self-raising flour, 80g ground almonds, few drops of almond essence. Grated zest of one lemon. Raspberry jam, approx 2tbsps, 10g flaked almonds. Cream butter and sugar, and add eggs, sieved flour, ground almonds, almond essence and lemon zest. Beat well. Spread jam over pastry base, then cover with almond mixture. Reduce oven temperature to 180 o C and place flan tin on baking tray. Bake for minutes until pastry is golden brown and filling firm to touch. Scatter over the flaked almonds. Cool, then remove from tin. Icing 50g icing sugar sieved, 1tsp lemon juice, 1tsp cold water. Mix ingredients together to make a smooth icing and drizzle over tart to decorate. Version 10 Page 5 of 5
