I can identify and give a straightforward description of the similarities and differences between texts. BASE THERAPY Breaking down the skill: Identify to use skimming and scanning skills to locate parts of the texts Straightforward description I describe the similarities and differences in a simple but clear manner Similarities and differences I can look at two texts and find ideas that are about the same area or topic, and can work out if they agree or disagree To develop our comparison skills, we can compare two objects by looking for similarities and differences. We treat them exactly as we would a text in an exam. Compare and contrast images A and B. Look for similarities and differences in the way that they look. A B TASK 1: It is important that you decide what aspects of the text you are trying to compare. For example, here we could look at shape, colour and texture. Draw lines to match the image to the correct statements about it. IMAGE A has had its stalk cut off. is almost perfectly round is orange in colour with dappled skin is round with a small dip in the top by the stalk IMAGE B is red in colour with smooth skin has a stalk with a green leaf
First Text Second Text Comparison Table Tennis Connective Structuring a response to comparison is a bit like a game of table tennis. You have to repeatedly move back and forth between the two texts, using connectives between your ideas. Take a look at the example below: Image A has a stalk with a green leaf whereas Image B has had its stalk cut off. TASK 2: You try completing some comparison statements about the images by filling out the framework below. Use the ideas from the matching exercise. STATEMENT ABOUT IMAGE A CONNECTIVE STATEMENT ABOUT IMAGE B TOP TIP CHOOSE A CONNECTIVE FROM THE CORRECT LIST TO HELP YOU CONNECTIVES TO SHOW SIMILARITY Likewise Similarly CONNECTIVES TO SHOW DIFFERENCE Whereas On the other hand
Ok, so images are easy. How do I compare texts? Comparing texts follows exactly the same procedure as images. You need to: Read the question carefully Identify exactly what you are trying to compare Find similarities and differences Structure them into a table tennis comparison Compare how Text A and Text B present fast food culture in America. Think about: What you learn about fast food culture Why fast food has become so popular 10 Marks CAREFULLY READ THE FOLLOWING EXTRACTS AND COMPLETE THE TASK BELOW TEXT A: Tripadvisor, United States: Food and Drink Many Americans have the bad habit of eating on the go, especially in the car. Therefore, the drive- through fast food restaurant has become a standard of American culture. It's known for unhealthy but tasty menu items. Depending on the chain, you can get practically anything from a fast- food restaurant, including tacos, hamburgers, Chinese food, and salad. Restaurants with drive- through windows are everywhere, and an average- sized city will have some that are open all night (especially by popular nightspots). Many roadside stops along highways have this type of fare for busy motorists to stop in, relax, stretch their legs, and have a bite to eat; the type of fare that is offered from place to place may vary from just a single McDonalds to a larger establishment with multiple restaurants and multiple choices (some may allow you to pick a slightly healthier meal, i.e. eating fried chicken vs. picking up a plate of spaghetti and meatballs.) Look for blue information signs with white lettering on the shoulder of the highway to see what fast food fare is available at the next exit. TASK 3: We have highlighted some important quotations in the extract. On the lines below, write down the main idea in each of these quotations.
TEXT B - The National Museum of American History, Food: Transforming the American Table : Food on the Go and Drive Thru By the end of the 20 th century, ready- to- eat convenience foods had become a significant part of our diet. Most Americans came to depend on the ability to buy such food whenever and wherever they wanted. Growers, manufacturers, grocers and convenience store owners, and restaurants attempted to meet this demand and create more of it through a variety of new products, inventive technologies, and expanded menus. While fast- food restaurants had been around since the 1920s, drive- thru dining came of age in car- crazy California in the 1950s. By the 1970s, major fast- food franchises nationwide began to install drive- thru windows. With more divorces, single- parent households, after- school activities, and women working outside the home, fast food that you could order and pick up without leaving your car became commonplace. TASK 4: We have highlighted some important quotations in the extract. On the lines below, write down the main idea in each of these quotations. TASK 5. Draw lines to match the quotations from Texts A and B which are about similar ideas. Many Americans have the bad habit of eating on the go, especially in the car. Restaurants with drive- through windows are everywhere, and an average- sized city will have some that are open all night the drive- through fast food restaurant has become a standard of American culture you can get practically anything from a fast- food restaurant, including tacos, hamburgers, Chinese food, and salad Most Americans came to depend on the ability to buy such food whenever and wherever they wanted. a variety of new products, inventive technologies, and expanded menus ready- to- eat convenience foods had become a significant part of our diet fast food that you could order and pick up without leaving your car became commonplace.
TASK 6: Study the different parts of this example by using the colour key. Text A states that many Americans have the bad habit of eating on the go, especially in the car. Similarly, Text B explains that ready to eat, convenience foods have become a significant part of our diet. Both texts agree that fast food has become more popular with American people. Introduce a quotation from Text A Use an appropriate connective to show similarity or difference Introduce a quotation from Text B Explain how the statements are similar or different. TASK 7: Continue this response below by completing each comparison statement. Add the matching quotations and sum up why the ideas are similar or different. Text A states that drive- through restaurants are popular in America because Similarly, Text B explains that drive through foods are Another reason Text A suggests drive through foods are popular is that Likewise, Text B tells us that A difference between the texts is that Text A says whereas Text B suggests Overall, I think that the extracts are mostly similar / mostly different because
