TIPS FOR USING GAS STOVES 1. Assemble the stove in a place that is...flat, out of the wind, NOT inside the tent, NOT by the tent door, maybe raised up to save you bending over 2. Make sure the gas cylinder is. screwed on properly, and that the knob of the burner is switched off 3. Before you light the gas you must....get everything ready to cook. DO NOT waste gas by lighting it, then going to get the pan of water etc 4. When you light the gas you must.. light the match near the burner, hold the match downwards to let the flame develop, then get someone to turn the gas on LOW. ( what happens if you turn the gas on then light the match?...bang! ( keep the matches safe and dry)
6. When you have finished cooking...put water in the pots to help soak off the dirt and make them easier to clean and make sure the gas is turned off. 7. At night put the stove and matches..stacked up inside your tent flysheet. Matches need to be kept dry and safe ( 1 person in charge of them) 8. Before you pack away the stove..make sure the gas is disconnected and the pots/pans are clean and dry so that they won t a) make the rucksack and contents smell b) leak out a horrible mess
WHAT TO EAT WHEN YOU GO ON YOUR EXPEDITION You need 2,800 calories on average per day. As you will be walking you will be burning up more than this, so high energy foods with carbohydrates to help release energy slowly are important. Liquids are also important to prevent dehydration. Eating the right food for your expedition starts the night before you leave. Suggested items for dinner the night before Pasta Rice pizza or potatoes, with meat/fish/ proteins rich foods (if veggie) Ideally you should NOT have..junk food ( Mc Donalds/ KFC etc ) Coke/ fizzy drinks For breakfast you should have A healthy light breakfast that will not cause you indigestion. Porridge/ fortified cereal ( Weetabix etc) / bacon/ eggs/ etc. Ideally you should NOT have.. just a piece of toast/ glass of juice/ full English fry up
For lunch you should pack sandwiches/ pastie s/ pork pies/ sausage rolls vegetarian equivalent, crisps, dried fruit Snack bars..etc all packed away in a protective box so it does not all get squashed. Ideally you should NOT have..can of fizzy drinks/ large packet crisps/ crispbread / squashy fruit like bananas For evening dinner for the group.. a source of carbohydrate ( pasta/rice/noodles/couscous etc) with some kind of protein like fish/ meat/ veggie alternative and a sauce. You also need a dessert like cake and Custard. Army rations or freeze dried ready made meals are OK but costly ( 3 pp) Ideally you should NOT have.. Pot noodle/ just Super noodles/ no dessert/ instant potato mix. NO BEANFEAST For Snack/drink Hot chocolate/ Flap jack/ cereal bars/ dried fruit etc Jelly, Dextrose/ chocolate etc Boiled sweets/ water in a large bottle Ideally you should NOT have.. Red Bull/ penny sweets/chews etc
For breakfast for the group A cooked breakfast of some sort is essential. Hot cereal e.g. porridge/ Ready brek etc. Then a fried bacon/ egg (break the egg into a plastic contaciner) bread ( pitta bread) Tomato sauce etc. Hot drink as well Ideally you should NOT have.. just nothing to eat or just a biscuit. For lunch for the group on the second day pastie s/ pork pies/ sausage rolls vegetarian equivalent, crisps, dried fruit. Water Ideally you should NOT have.. sandwiches left from day 1/ ready to eat pasta pots etc that need to be kept chilled The accessories the group will need to bring for any cooking are Washing up liquid/ sourer/j cloth/ cooking oil / eating utensils/ plate (disposable?) mug ( plastic)
To keep food fresh ( bacon meat milk)...freeze it the day before and let it defrost Use sealable plastic bags/ pots to put tinned food in. Try to find dehydrated foods you can add water to rather than ready made e.g. packet sop vs tinned, instant custard powder vs cartoons Also think about COST. Pre-prepared foods like dehydrated pasta and sauce are more expensive, give smaller quantities than raw pasta and a pour on sauce. You now need to plan a menu for your group and work out who is going to bring what and what it will be packed in. Make notes below of what your group decide on a menu and what you will bring. NEXT MEETING you will be cooking up your evening meal and breakfast and washing up. You may decide you want to meet up and wander around a supermarket to see what is available that you all like.
