Introduction: The kiwifruit has shown tremendous potential in the recent years and has been assessed as a nodal fruit for diversification of mid - hill horticulture which has wider scope in the domestic as well international market. As the apple has revolutionized the economy of farmers of high hills, it is a boon to the farmers of mid and low hills owing to very high economic returns. The kiwifruit cultivation has an important advantage that it comes in the market during October to December when practically no other fruit is available to compete with it. Another major benefit of its cultivation is that the fruit is harvested hard and can be transplanted to long distances without using sophisticated packing material. The fruit is a rich source of Vitamin C (90 mg/100 g) and has medicinal value. Its potassium content by weight is slightly less than that of banana. It also contains Vitamin A and E. The Kiwifruit seed oil contains on an average 62 % alpha linolenic acid, an omega- 3 fatty acid. Usually a medium size kiwifruit contains about 46 calories, 0.3 g fats, 1 g protein, 11 g carbohydrates, 75 mg vitamins and 2.6g dietary fibre. The Kiwifruit also serves as a natural blood thinner and a recent study performed in Norway revealed that consuming 2-3 kiwifruit daily for 28 days can replace aspirin therapy and can significantly thin the blood. Thus, it can help in reducing the risk of clots and lowers the fats in the blood which is the cause of blockages.

5 Although there is a great potential for its cultivation in our country, yet its cultivation has not gained momentum because of poor transfer of cultivation technology to the farmers. Consequently, the Kiwifruit produced in our country is of small and poor quality attributes and thus is not able to complete with the fruits imported from New Zealand, Australia, Italy and other countries. The biggest bottleneck in the production of kiwifruit is the lack of awareness about its production technology. Some research work on the production technology fruit size and quality through crop manipulation via pruning, pollination, thinning, integrated water and nutrient management and use of Plant growth regulators (PGRs) especially, CPPU have been done with encouraging results, which need validation in the farmer s field. Objectives 1. Promotion of kiwifruit cultivation in mid-hills through popularization of improved production technologies 2. Introduction of new varieties 3. Demonstration of modern kiwifruit orcharding and propagation techniques 10. Technical Programme of work: The technical programme of work to be undertaken quarter wise is described below: First Quarter Establishment of 200 kiwifruit plants of Allison cultivar for demonstration of improved technologies Inter farm roads / upgardation of the existing roads to facilitates the moment of farm machinery Solar fencing of the kiwi orchard Procurement of FYM and other technological inputs Second Quarter: ThirdQuarter: Installation of fertigation unit Errection of training structure and anti-hail nets Construction of water harvesting tanks Modernization of mist chamber Completion of left out works Dissemination of technologies through field exposure visits, awareness campaigns etc.
