2 KEY STAGE 2 BRAMBLE Rubus fruticosus It is a thorny plant that grows in bushes, with white or pink flowers. You can eat the black fruit (blackberries). They start green but are ripe when they are black. Woodland and hedges - it will grow almost anywhere in the UK! You can eat the fruit (blackberries) when they are black, this is usually from late July Ripe juicy blackberries are traditionally used in pies, crumbles, jams, and jellies. 4 KEY STAGE 2 Elder Sambucus nigra It has a browny-grey, twisted trunk and branches with tiny white flowers with a pleasant smell. The green berries ripen to black in autumn. Very common in hedges and woodland edges throughout the UK. The fruit is ripe and ready to eat in September/October. It is used to make Elderflower cordial. 6 KEY STAGE 2 Wild garlic Allium ursinum It has white, star-shapes flowers with pointed petals and grows up to 45cm tall. It sometimes covers forest floors like a carpet, filling the air with the smell of garlic. We eat the leaves. In woodlands / forests. The leaves appear in March and are best picked when young. The flowers come out April-June. The leaves and flowers are edible - young leaves are delicious in sauces and salads and the flowers can be added to salads and sandwiches to make them look beautiful!
