1 Monitoring EU Agri-Food Trade: Development until January 2018 January 2018: good start of a year for EU agri-food exports The value of EU agri-food exports in January 2018 kept its very high level, now at EUR 10.6 billion. With agri-food imports to the EU decreasing slightly to a monthly value of EUR 10.3 billion, the monthly trade balance developed a surplus of EUR 0.3 billion, compared to a perfectly balanced trade in January Highest increases in monthly export values (Jan 2018 compared to Jan 2017, EUR million) were recorded for Japan (+56), Brazil (+48), Russia (+43) and Morocco (+41). Monthly exports fell to Saudi Arabia (-59), Algeria (-51), China (- 49) and United Arab Emirates (-39). By sector, the highest export growth (EUR million) was achieved in infant food (+81), sugar (+67), pasta (+58) and pet food (+57). Raw hides and skins exports dropped (EUR - 72 million); so did exports of wheat (-51). The value of January 2018 agri-food imports compared to January 2017 increased most for EU imports from Ukraine, and to a lesser extent, India. The value of imports from the USA, Argentina and Indonesia went down most. Major increases were seen in cereals (other than wheat and rice) and tropical fruit. Imports of oilcakes and cocoa beans are the ones decreasing most in value terms. 1
2 Wine and dairy exports increase, offset decrease in cereals and pork For the 12-months period February 2017 to January 2018, EU agri-food exports reached a value of EUR billion, corresponding to a sustained increase by 4.5% in value terms compared to the same period one year ago. Major gains in annual values have been achieved in agri-food exports to the USA (EUR +1.0 billion; +5%), Russia (EUR +0.8 billion; +14%) and several Asian markets: Japan (EUR +0.6 billion; +11%), China (EUR +0.4 billion; +4%), and Korea (EUR +0.3 billion; +11%). Further annual increases were recorded in agrifood exports to Turkey (EUR +0.5 billion; +15%), Hong Kong (EUR +0.3 billion; +9%) and Ukraine (EUR +0.3 billion; +19%) while increases of more than EUR 0.2 billion also took place in exports to Switzerland and Australia in the last twelve-month period. Annual export values remain down for North African and Middle East destinations, in particular Saudi Arabia (EUR -0.6 billion; -13%), Egypt (EUR -0.4 billion; -22%), the United Arab Emirates (EUR -0.3 billion; -8%), Algeria (EUR -0.2 billion; -8%) and Libya (EUR -0.2 billion; -15%). Agri-food exports to Vietnam, Morocco and Tunisia also went down over the last twelve-month period. Wine (EUR +1.2 billion; +11%), milk powder (EUR +843 million; +24%) and infant food (EUR +753 million; +11%) exports have been performing very well over the last twelve months. Export performance on a yearly basis also increased by EUR 614 million for pet food and by EUR 495 million for spirits and liqueurs. Of particular notice are the exports of sugar, which increased notably, by almost 50% or EUR 320 million. On the other hand, wheat, other cereals (excluding rice) and pork exports experienced the biggest drop in value terms on an annual basis (respectively EUR -1.4 billion or -27%, EUR -240 million or -13% and EUR -280 million or -5%). Only two other categories recorded notable losses (around EUR 0.1 billion) in export values over the last 12 months: Fresh or dried fruit (excluding citrus and tropical fruit) and Fresh, chilled and dried vegetables. EU agri-food imports increasing, but net trade surplus at record level Agri-food imports from third countries in the 12- months period February 2017 to January 2018 accounted for EUR billion, i.e. an increase by 3.3% compared to the same period one year ago. Nevertheless, driven by the stronger export performance over the 12-months period, the export surplus now stands at EUR 21 billion (+EUR 2.2 billion; +12%). Main origins for EU agri-food imports over the past 12 months are Brazil (EUR 11.8 billion), the USA (EUR 10.8 billion), Ukraine (EUR 5.6 billion), followed by Argentina, China, Indonesia, Switzerland and Turkey, each accounting for between EUR 4.5 and 5.5 billion. On the year-on-year basis, the value of agri-food imports from the two top Latin American import origins went down. Imports from Argentina (EUR -570 million or -9%) decreased most, while Brazil (-1%) limited the reduction in export values to the EU to EUR -137 million. Some other key partners also experienced reductions both in absolute and relative terms, most notably Ghana (EUR -382 million), the USA (EUR -291 million), Uruguay (EUR -205 million), Turkey and Ivory Coast. On the other hand, the value of imports from Ukraine and Indonesia increased most significantly (EUR +1.4 billion; +34% and EUR 0.8 billion; +19%, respectively). Over the 12 months period, EU import values for agri-food products also went up for India, Australia, China, Morocco and Vietnam. Looking at product categories, the highest increases in import values over the last twelve months were recorded for cereals (excluding wheat and rice) (EUR +881 million; +38%), fatty acids (EUR +836 million; +50%) and palm oil (EUR +816 million; +15%). However, import values decreased in particular for cocoa beans (EUR -957 million; -19%), soya beans (EUR million; -8%) and oilcakes (EUR million; -5%). This monthly newsletter again provides a table in the annex, presenting the trade balance and its development by product category. The largest gains in net exports were achieved in wine, while the net exports reduced most for wheat and net imports increased most for other cereals and palm oil over the last 12 months.
