6 PROGRAM NUTRITION CNER SCHOOL LUNCH: GOOD F KIDS AND GOOD F YOUR WALLET As the cost of everything increases-there is one meal that is still a great Value: both nutritionally and economically! School lunch is still an incredible bargain at $2.05 in our elementary schools and $2.05 at our secondary schools. WHAT ARE THOSE NUMBERS ON THE MENU? Richmond City Public Schools is now providing the total grams of carbohydrates in each food item on the monthly menu. Carbohydrates are the main nutrient in food that provides energy. One serving of a carbohydrate is 15g, according to the American Diabetes Association Carbohydrate Exchange List. Most children should eat about 45-75g of carbohydrates per meal for a balanced diet. The grams listed next to each individual food item on this menu are based on nutrient information obtained from USDA and food manufacturers. Carbohydrate gram will vary based on the portion served. Nutritional Integrity of the Menu : School Lunch includes Five Great Choices Milk Fat free or 1% - flavored or regular Vegetables From fresh carrot sticks to steamed broccoli Fruit Everything from pineapple to locally grown apples; often fresh Grains More whole grain items like rolls or sandwich bread RPS s goal is to meet all federal guidelines, including caloric levels, percent of calories from fat, 10 percent of calories from saturated fat, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, protein, calcium and several other nutrients. Many of our items are reduced fat and most are free of trans fat. We encourage good eating habits in children with cooperation from parents and industry. We encourage all students to limit their snacks to two items with a meal. Parents may contact the cafeteria manager to place a restriction on their child s account if they wish to limit or prohibit the purchase of à-la-carte items. Everyone plays a role in improving children s nutrition and helping students make better choices. Don t forget increased physical activity is a part of overall health! Meat or meat alternate items like white meat chicken, bean chili, lean beef Save Money: Eat School Lunch On average it costs less to buy a school lunch than to bring a lunch from home. The estimated national average of a school lunch from home was $3.43 last school year. 1 1 According to a meal cost analysis by Alice Jo Rainville, PhD, RD. CHE, SNS of Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, MI RPS Vegetarian Choices RPS offers a wide variety of fruits and vegetables each day. Some of our Vegetarian selections include Chef Salad with Cheese, Cheese Lasagna, Cheese Ravioli, Cheese Nachos, Cheese Pizza, Cheese Max Sticks, Low fat Yogurt and String Cheese, and Nacho Cheese Pals Panda Pack. Our Yogurt Bear Panda Pack contains Low Fat Yogurt, String Cheese, Muffin and Graham Crackers, and Fruit. All meals come with a choice of flavored or unflavored Milk. If you have specific questions about Vegetarian offerings, your Cafeteria Manager is able to assist.
