3 About EUCOFEL Founded more than 60 years ago, EUCOFEL is the European Fruit and Vegetables Trade Association. EUCOFEL s mission is to represent and defend the trade of fruits and vegetables produced in the EU. EUCOFEL acts on an international level, complementing the efforts and actions taken at national level by its Members, with the aim of serving the interests of the EU producers and exporters, striving to create a level playing field and ensuring fairer conditions for EU producers and exporters. 3

EUCOFEL only defends the trade of European productions. Members from the main European fruit and vegetables producing countries: France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Portugal and Spain. 4

5 The EU fruit and vegetable sector A key sector, weighting around 20% of EU agricultural production Vegetables 13,6% of all EU agricultural output. Main producers in terms of economic value: The Netherlands (17.8 %); Spain (16.7 %); Italy (16.5 %). Most important products in terms of the volume of harvested products,: Tomatoes (17.6 million tonnes); Carrots (5.1 million tonnes); Onions (6.1 million tonnes). Fruits 6,7% of all EU agricultural output. Main producers in terms of economic value: Spain (33.4 %); Italy (18.7 %); France (11.4 %). 10 Fruits and Vegetables from the EU Quality, safety and taste European Union law lays down strict production requirements to guarantee the standards of all European agricultural products and foodstuffs. In addition, the European marketing standards encourage EU farmers to produce products of given quality, in conformity with the consumers expectations. European consumers are very demanding about food safety, which is why dealing with fresh agricultural products is subject to various legal and other buyer requirements. 10

11 Fruits and Vegetables from the EU Quality, safety and taste Limited use of pesticides: Maximum residue levels (MRLs). In addition: subject to supermarkets own standards, which are stricter than legislation. Contaminants: Mandatory limits for several contaminants, including nitrate and metals. EU fruit and vegetables producers have to comply with very strict requirements Marketing standards: Mandatory general and 10 specific marketing standards for the minimum quality and maturity. Labelling, packaging and traceability: Very strict requirements regarding food labelling, packaging and traceability: Name and address of packer and dispatchers; Name of produce; Country of origin; Class and size; Lot number for traceability. 11

12 Fruits and Vegetables from the EU Quality, safety and taste Strict compliance with food safety regulations is a priority for every EU producer and exporter. European Marketing Standards European marketing standards state minimum requirements that products sold in the European Union must comply with. There is a general and 10 specific marketing standards for specific products: EU Specific marketing standards Apples Citrus fruit Kiwifruit Lettuces and endives Peaches and nectarines Pears Strawberries Sweet peppers Table grapes Tomatoes Voluntary certification schemes In addition to EU legal requirements, many EU buyers require the implementation of a food safety management system based on Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP). Most EU producers are certified GLOBALG.A.P. and British Retail Consortium (BRC), which have become a minimum standard for most European supermarkets. 12
