Register here: Summer Nutritin Champin Awards Eligibility Requirements Spnsrs are required t be in gd standing with all Schl Nutritin Prgrams. This means the spnsr has had n majr findings, prgram vilatins, and has cmpleted and implemented all crrective actins frm the last cmpliance review, was nt fund seriusly deficient in the past tw years, and has never been terminated frm the Summer Nutritin Prgrams. USDA Level Award Turnip the Beet: High Quality Meals in the Summer Meal Prgrams The Turnip the Beet Award, by the U.S. Department f Agriculture s (USDA) Fd and Nutritin Service (FNS), recgnizes utstanding Summer Meal Prgram spnsrs acrss the natin wh wrk hard t ffer high quality meals that are appetizing, appealing, and nutritius during the summer mnths. The award is pen t all eligible spnsrs. Alng with reading the belw evaluatin criteria, please see the attached PDFs in the frm the USDA that describe this award in further detail in terms f eligibility, nminatin prcedures, scring, prizes, and available resurces. Evaluatin Criteria (all sectins shuld be entered in 207 Nminatin Frm PDF) Sectin : General Infrmatin Cmplete all fillable fields and enter in all requested cntact infrmatin. Sectin 2: Shrt Answer Questins (0-3 pints pssible) Spnsrs must answer the fllwing questins t demnstrate hw the meals served at their summer sites are high quality.. Hw are the meals culturally apprpriate? (Describe hw meals are apprpriate fr the race, ethnicity, and religin f the ppulatin being served, including traditinal fds. Fr example, traditinal Native cmmunity fds, such as

2 wild rice and bisn, are ffered at a site attended by Native American children; r alternatives t prk are served at sites attended by children wh are Muslim r Jewish.) 2. Hw are the meals age-apprpriate fr the ppulatin being served? (Describe hw meals served are apprpriate fr the age f the children being served. Fr example, fd is cut int bite size pieces fr yung children, r the spnsr ffers different meals t appeal t varius age grups that attend the site.) 3. Are tastes tests, surveys, r ther methds used t gather feedback frm children abut the meals served at the summer sites? (Describe any methds used t gather feedback frm participants.) 4. Hw are healthy fds marketed t children? (Describe hw healthy fds are encuraged. Fr example, fun descriptrs are used in menus and signage r healthier chices are placed prminently in the service area t encurage cnsumptin.) 5. What, if any, fd and nutritin-based activities are ffered at the summer sites? (Describe activities related t MyPlate activities, cking, lcal fds, gardening, farming r ther fd and nutritin tpics.) Spnsrs that use Team Nutritin resurces at their Summer sites will receive (3) bnus pts. Specific details will be given greater value than generalities. Sectin 3: Additinal Criteria (0-7 pints pssible) The submitted menu and shrt answer questins will als be evaluated based n the additinal criteria belw. Alng with submitting the cmpleted nminatin frm, a ne mnth menu must be submitted fr cnsideratin f a Turnip the Beet Award. Please see the attached sample menu at the end f the 207 Nminatin Frm PDF fr an example f an acceptable menu frmat. The menus and shrt answers d nt need t meet all f the additinal criteria belw. The mre additinal criteria met thrugh the menu and shrt answers, the increased chance Spnsrs have f learning an award and attaining a higher award level. Menus will be evaluated based n the fllwing criteria: Lcally prduced vegetables, fruits, grains, r meat/meat alternates are served as part f the reimbursable meal and prmted as lcal fds at least ne time per week, per meal type (e.g., if a summer site serves breakfast and lunch, a lcal fd is served and prmted at a minimum f ne breakfast meal and ne lunch meal per week). Bnus: Seasnal fd activities are ffered at the summer site (e.g., nutritin educatin lessn abut seasnal fds, cking demnstratins with seasnal fds, rganized gardening activities, hsting a lcal farmer at the summer site, etc.). Entrees repeat 2 times r less per mnth. Bnus: Menu includes at least ne ht fd item per week. Meals include a variety f clrs, flavrs (e.g., tart, sweet, spicy, savry, sur, bitter, umami, etc.), and textures (e.g., crunchy, juicy, chewy, sft, etc.). A wide variety f vegetables and fruits are served thrughut the week. Bnus: At least ne serving each f dark green vegetables, red and range vegetables, beans and peas (legumes), starchy vegetables, and ther vegetables are served per week. Bnus: The majrity f vegetables and fruits are fresh. At least half f the grains served are whle grain-rich (e.g., cntains 00 percent whle 2

3 grains, r cntains at least 50 percent whle grains and the remaining grains in the fd are enriched). Sweet grains (e.g. ckies, cakes, brwnies, fruit turnvers, dughnuts, taster pastries, r sweet rlls) are served nly 2 times per meal type per week (e.g., if a summer site serves breakfast and snack, a sweet grain is served at n mre than tw breakfast meals and tw snacks per week). Bnus: Sweet grains are nt served. Only lw-fat (%) r fat-free dairy prducts (including milk, ygurt, and cheese) are served. If -year ld children attend the summer site, they are served whle milk. Water is available at n cst. The menu shuld include details such as whether vegetables and fruit are fresh, frzen, canned r dried, the type f milk (e.g., fat cntent and whether it is flavred), which items are whle grain-rich*, and which items are surced lcally. Yu may submit ther supprting dcuments t further demnstrate the quality f the meals, such as ingredient lists, prduct frmulatin statements, recipes t verify a fd item is whle grain-rich, and invices fr lcal fd purchases. In additin, yu are encuraged t submit ther supprting dcuments t further demnstrate the quality f their meals, such as news clips abut the prgram, phts, testimnials, r invices fr lcal fd purchases. If phts cntain pictures f children, please include a signed pht release frm with yur applicatin. State Level Awards We knw that Summer Fd Service Prgram (SFSP) and Summer Seamless Optin (SSO) spnsrs in ur state are implementing innvative and creative changes t expand their summer nutritin prgrams. We want t celebrate yu! We encurage all state spnsrs t cnsider applying t the USDA level Turnip the Beet Award. The fllwing awards ffer mre pprtunities fr NC spnsrs t be recgnized n a state level fr their hard wrk. Yu may apply fr ne f the awards r multiple awards based n yur interest and classificatin. This is an pprtunity fr yu t shw hw yu met r exceeded 207 gals. Spnsrs that can clearly demnstrate that they met r exceeded 207 gals will be given preference. Ging the Distance in Innvatin Award This award will be presented t a returning spnsr that implemented innvative cncepts and increased participatin in their SFSP r SSO prgram. Additinally, we want t hear hw innvative cncepts increased prgram participatin. Describe hw yur prgram was innvative and dcument yur increase in meals served frm 206 t 207 in the attached excel spreadsheet titled Ging the Distance dcumentatin 207. Innvative cncepts culd include but, are nt limited t: mbile feeding, any activities that create cnsistent r increased participatin, innvative partnerships, and adding new sites t rural r underserved areas.
