Fruit Mature Size & Shape Fall Color Characteristic Asparagus Jersey Knight Zone 3 9 Spring Mildly Earthly 4-5 FT Green 'Jersey Knight' is the most winter hardy of all the Jersey Hybrids and it is widely adapted to temperate and cool climates. It produces medium to large (7-9 inch), green spears with purple bracts. They are often used for processing and for fresh market. Blueberries Blueberry Season Early = June-mid July = Late July-mid Aug Late = Late Aug. Wild Lowbush blueberries are a native fruit crop to Atlantic Canada, Quebec and the state of Maine. They are short in stature and unlike their Highbush cousins, may spread with underground stems. A mature planting can form a dense ground cover. Profuse white blooms yield small sized light blue fruit with the distinctive wild blueberry flavor. Annual pruning is not necessary but they respond well if two-thirds of the growth is sheared back every second or third year in late winter. Great candidates for landscape borders, these plants will attract wildlife, and your friends and family alike. Fruit Mature Size & Shape Fall Color Characteristic Wild Lowbush Brunswick Zone 3-6 Small Wild FT Ground Cover Brunswick forms a dense ground cover 1 1/2-2 high. The green glossy leaves are a perfect backdrop to the sky blue, pea sized fruit. Brunswick scores high style points with amazing red fall colors. Wild Lowbush Top Hat Small Wild 1-2 FT Globe Yellow Top Hat is a perfect name for this dwarf cultivar as it grows 1-2 high and wide. Plentiful white blooms in spring give way to attractive light blueberries that are pea sized and larger. Top Hat is perfect for defined border plantings or growing in patio containers.
are high chill varieties and the most widely planted blueberries, popular with home gardeners throughout the Northern U.S. and Southern Canada. There are more than 100 named varieties, out of which Schroeders has selected 21 of the best, allowing gardeners to select a combination that will produce delicious crops continuously over a 100- day period. These varieties display bush shapes from short and compact to tall and open. Fall foliage colors and unique winter wood tones complement gardens and home landscapes. The berries range in size from ¼" to over 1" in diameter, and in color from almost black to light powder blue. requires a minimum of 800 chilling hours for proper fruit set. All cultivars are self-fertile but will produce better crops if more than one variety is planted. Fruit Mature Size & Shape Fall Color Characteristic Bluecrop Bluejay Chandler Large Bluecrop is considered the best all around variety for adaptability, long production period, high yield fruit, and disease resistance. There are other varieties with better ornamental value. Bluecrop is perhaps the most widely plant variety in the U.S. Early Medium Classic Delicately Open, upright 6-7 FT upright Yellow Bluejay grows rapidly and is relatively easy to establish and looks great in the landscape. Long loose clusters of light blue fruit will hang on the bush for long periods without loss of quality, making it one of the best berries for freezing, pies, and even for canning. Light green colored leaves in summer precede bright yellow canes and branches in winter. Late Giant Full, Robust 6-7 FT Slightly Chandler holds the distinction of being the world s largest blueberry. The ripening season will provide gardeners with a bounty of flavorful, fresh picked fruit for up to six weeks. Eaten by the handful or presented with a specialty dessert. Jersery Late Medium Delicately 6-7 FT upright Flame Bluejay grows rapidly and is relatively easy to establish and looks great in the landscape. Long loose clusters of light blue fruit will hang on the bush for long periods without loss of quality, making it one of the best berries for freezing, pies, and even for canning. Light green colored leaves in summer precede bright yellow canes and branches in winter.
Fruit Mature Size & Shape Fall Color Characteristic Liberty Late Large Balanced, Juicy, Robust 7-8 FT Upright, Vigorous NEW! Liberty is the hottest new variety! It produces firm, distinctly flavored, light colored berries that pick easily and ripen into late season time frames. Liberty is adaptable and grows vigorously. Northland Early Medium Fresh, 4-7 FT, Upright Yellow Northland is the most cold-hardy Highbush variety. It is easy to grow and adaptable to many different soil types. This very productive variety has very high yields when mature. The berries are excellent for jams and baking because of their high sugar content. The bright yellow wood and compact shape makes Northland a good candidate for landscaping, especially when grouped with other compact varieties like Bluetta or Patriot. Patriot Early & Late Patriot was selected for Large 3 5 FT Open,, Yellow, home gardeners who desire a cold-0hardy variety that bears consistent crops. Patriot s low growing bush reflects its partial lowbush parentage. It is adaptable to many soil types and may perform better in wetter soils than may other varieties. Patriot makes an excellent container and landscape variety with its showy white blooms in the spring, dark green summer foliage, and fiery orange-red fall colors. heart Early & Late Medium Full, Robust Upright This self-pollinating blueberry is as worry-free and easy to maintain as any other bush, but with the added bonus of a double yield. Its first robust crop of dusky blue berries arrives near the end of spring or the start of summer and then gives an encore at summer's end.
Half-High cultivars are crosses of and Lowbush selections from the wild. Northblue, Northcountry and Northsky are generally lower growing, compact bushes that carry a snow load without damage to the branches. Polaris have more upright growth. Fruit yields are generally lower than Highbush varieties but berry quality is very good. All these varieties have the wild flavor of their parents. The Half-Highs were bred for exceptional cold hardiness but are truly outstanding ornamental landscape plants wherever they are grown. All theses varieties have bright fall Fruit Mature Size & Shape Fall Color Characteristic Half-High Northcountry Medium Smoothly 3-4 FT Compact, Upright Scarlet Northcountry grows slightly larger than Northsky, reaching 3 feet in diameter. It displays compact bush characteristics similar to Northsky, but is more vigorous and adaptable in less than optimum soil types. With its dark green summer foliage and scarlet fall color, Northcountry is one of the best varieties for patio pots in the edible landscape. Half-High Northsky Half-High Polaris Small Fresh, Wild FT Compact Burgundy Northsky is the most cold-hardy of all blueberries and can survive extreme winter conditions. Even in warmer areas, Northsky has been quite popular as a wonderful addition to the landscape, being particularly well suited for container growing, borders or group plantings. The bush grows 2-3 feet wide and begins spring completely covered in snowwhite blooms. The foliage is dense, with small glossy green leaves in summer. Early Medium Delicate, 3-4 FT Compact, Upright Polaris, a variety developed in Minnesota, is recommended where a cold-hardy, early ripening companion to Northblue or Chippewa is desired. The berries are aromatic and very sweet. For best pollination and fruit set, plant Polaris alongside other cold hardy varieties.
s Fruit Mature Size & Shape Fall Color Characteristic Zone 4-8 Fruit Delaware Vigorous deciduous vine with bold-textured, deep green foliage. Grown for its clusters of small round red berries. Ripens in early midseason. A sweet dessert grape. Well suited for short seasons. Fresh, Wild 3-6 FT, Canadice Seedless Grown for its clusters of reddish fruit that ripen in mid to late summer, the Canadice red seedless grape adds charm with its twisting vines and rustic foliage. The fruit of this American rape variety is excellent both for fresh eating and homemade jelly. Delicate, 5-6 FT, Concord Deep purple, exceptionally sweet fruits for eating fresh, juice, and jelly. A cool arbor laden with grapes is a landscape treat that people have enjoyed for thousands of years. These grapes are self-pollinating and are seeded; they ripen mid-september. Zone 5-9 Ground Concord Seedless Cover These vines produce abundant crops that have also been used to make prize-winning jams and jellies. Exceptional hardiness, vigor and disease resistance. Seedless. Heat-tolerant. Self-pollinating. Ripens in mid September.
Fruit Mature Size & Shape Fall Color Characteristic Fredonia Zone 4-9 Firm, Juicy The Fredonia is a deciduous vine that is normally grown for fruit, wine, and shade. It requires full sun and medium amounts of water, with good drainage. When well cared for, it can be productive for 50 or more years. Himrod Seedless, Mild, Juicy 4 6 FT Highly productive vine bears crispy sweet fruit. Large handsome clusters turn goldenyellow when fully ripe. Medium-sized grapes with fine flavor. These vines yield pounds of grapes. Seedless. Niagara Tangy Bears big clusters of huge, slip-skin, seeded grapes. Absolutely terrific for fresh eating, jelly or making your own wine. Ripens mid to late September. Reliance A juicy, deep-red grape that is flavor-packed. This variety is perfect for eating fresh or putting in fruit salads. Also makes an irresistible, healthy snack for kids. Vigorous vines produce generous clusters. Blooms late to avoid spring frosts.
Raspberry Raspberry Fall Gold Zone 4-8 Fall Bearing Everbearing 4-5FT H 2-3 W Tall upright canes, producing large, conic, pale yellow fruit with very good flavor and texture mid to late season. An extra large, sweet flavored, golden yellow variety that pairs wonderfully with Caroline. A fine choice for a fall bearing type. Raspberry Heritage Zone 4-8 Early Sum. Aug-Frost Fruit 4-5 FT H 2-3 W Luscious flavor and heavy yields of juicy, sweet, red fruits. Space 3' apart in rows 6' apart. Plants produce berries on old canes in early summer and on new canes from August to frost. Vigorous and hardy. Self-pollinating. Grows best in full sun. Raspberry Latham Zone 4-8 July Fruit A reliable favorite! Premium-quality berries have glowing pure red color, plus wonderfully sweet flavor. Firm, luscious fruit processes perfectly for jams and jellies. Self-pollinating. Summer bearing trim old growth after fruiting. Rhubarb Victoria Zone 3-9 May-June stalks, green with Tender red blush Noticeably sweeter and milder the all others. Stalks are slender and very tender, so it's quick and easy to fix for the pot. Plants are prolific; stalks green with red blush. Bare roots are great for early spring planting.
Strawberries Season mid June early July Fruit Mature Size & Shape Characteristic Strawberry Allstar Zone FT Slightly This easy-care plant is very vigorous, giving you crops of large, glossy, firm berries with an exceptionally sweet taste and that perfect strawberry shape. You ll want to plant plenty of extras for freezing or making preserves. Mild, Strawberry Eversweet 1 FT Slightly Perfect for patio gardens. This everbearing plant produces sweet, long, cone-shaped strawberries in its very first year! It will continue producing, even when temperatures exceed 80ºF. Ripens each summer and continues to fruit into fall. Strawberry Ft. Laramie 1FT Slightly Fort Laramie is bred especially for northern growers but performs great throughout the country. With these strawberries you will harvest your first berries this very summer. And what berries - HUGE, bright, scarlet-red berries with pink-red color right to the core. It is easily planted into bedding packs, and also works well in hanging baskets. Replace every 2 years mid to late Summer. The strawberries are delicious fresh, frozen, or in jams and wines. Cold hardy. Top commercial variety. Large,
Blackberries grow similar to raspberries, on tall upright canes. Their fruit is very high in antioxidants, dietary fibers and are low in calories. Plant where there is plenty of room to grow. Blackberry Black Satin Thornless Summer Needs support Mostly thornless canes, large firm glossy berries, sweet flavor, excellent for jellies and jams. Deciduous soft pink flowers in second year to produce fruit. Lingonberries Because lingonberries are plentiful in the forested areas of the Swedish inland, they are widely collected for jam. Lingonberries are often served as jam, for instance with oven-made thick pancakes, or they may be served as a relish with meat courses such as meatballs, beef stew or liver dishes; regionally, they are even served with fried herring. The jam is also often used on mashed potatoes and the traditional oatmeal porridge, sometimes together with cinnamon, and, perhaps, a little sugar or syrup. Because of the benzoic acid, which is found in high amounts in lingonberries, the berries keep well without any sugar or other preservatives. North American native, lingonberries are grown as a low evergreen shrub that likes wet soil. Lingonberry 8-12 Zone 3-8 June Fruit Attractive easy to grow, with bright red fruits on small, low growing shrubs. Plants are self -fertile but planting 2 or more will offer better fruit Contact your local extension office for more information on pruning & care
