Commentary Total Exports In the year to 2014, total wine exports increased by 0.7 per cent to 688 million litres. The total value remained steady at A$ billion. The average value slipped due to a slightly weaker bulk wine average value along with the continued shift to shipping wine in bulk shipping containers. The average value of bottled wine continued its six year-long ascent increasing by 6 per cent to A$4.83 per litre. The major factors and trends impacting Australian exports during the year were: Consumers in Australia s major markets seeking more premium wines which has propelled high valued Australian exports The declining Australian dollar which has inflated A$ prices The large 2013 vintages for the major producers has particularly affected bulk wine exports Austerity measures in China continue to impact the premium imported wine market Figure 1 illustrates the total volume of Australian wine exports has been increasing steadily throughout Bottled wine exports declined by 7 per cent to 283 million litres on an annual basis, a slower rate of decline than in recent years and a sign that it may be stabilising. An increase in bulk wine exports has offset the decline in bottled exports. 1 All references to value and average value per litre are in Free On Board (FOB) terms. An upward trend began at the start of the calendar year for bulk wine exports which have grown by 7 per cent to 399 million litres in the last 12 months. Meanwhile, the soft-pack and alternative packaging segment has declined by 5 per cent to 7 million litres. Figure 1: Total Australian exports by container type Bottled Exports Although the volume of bottled wine exports has declined, the average price has increased. During the year the average value increased by 6 per cent to A$4.83 per litre. The increase in average value almost offset the decline in volumes which resulted in the total value of bottled exports declining by 1.5 per cent to A$1.4 billion. The August 2014 moving annual total () recorded the slowest decline in six and a half years (see Figure 2). The chart illustrates that the rate of value change has 5

Commentary (continued) been on an upward trajectory and has almost moved into positive territory i.e. growth in the value of bottled exports. The growth in average value has been due to a combination of factors and varies depending on the destination. In 11 of the top 15 destinations for bottled wine, the average value has increased. In the UK, wine is now mostly shipped in bulk, and the remaining wine that is exported in bottles is at higher price points. In North America, the average value has increased due to growth in more expensive wines. Australia s cheaper currency also appears to be helping to push the price of individual wines up in Australian dollar terms. Also helping to increase the average value is a general shift towards Asia, which purchases more of Australia s finest wines. Figure 2: Value growth of bottled wine exports Figure 3 illustrates bottled value growth in Australia s top five markets for bottled wine. There have been vastly different outcomes for the growth of bottled value depending on destination. Hong Kong has recorded four years of solid double digit growth. China, which has come off lofty growth above 60 per cent in 2010, is now in decline. However the rate of decline has slowed over the last few months. The UK, which has been in structural transformation, has also started to decline at a less severe rate. Meanwhile, Canada and the US are in their best position in years. In fact, until December 2013, the value of bottled exports to the USA had not increased since December During the quarter, Canada also returned to growth for the first time since August Figure 3: Value growth of bottled wine exports by destination 6

Commentary (continued) Bulk Exports Bulk exports in this report refers to means of shipping only, typically in 24,000 litre shipping containers. These bulk shipments are made up of large volume, branded wine which is packaged in-market and also what is more traditionally known as bulk wine where wine is sold in bulk for third party brands. It is not possible to separate the two. Bulk wine exports increased by 7 per cent to 399 million litres. It is now the dominant mode of transporting wine accounting for 58 per cent of all exported wine. The average value of bulk wine exports declined slightly, down 1 per cent to A$1.00 per litre. Total bulk white wine exports increased by 10.5 per cent to 206 million litres while the average value declined by 1.3 per cent to A$0.87 per litre. Meanwhile, bulk red wine exports increased at a slower rate, up 3.5 per cent to 191 million litres and the average value was flat at A$1.15 per litre. The average value of bulk white wine is at a three year low, while the average value of bulk red wine, despite dipping slightly in recent months, remains higher than at the end of The large 2013 harvests by most of the world s major wine producers appear to be making it hard for Australian exporters to benefit fully from the lower Australian dollar. Total Exports by Wine Style The marginal growth in the total volume of exports was due to elevated white wine exports offsetting the decline in red wine. Total white exports increased by 5 per cent to 290 million litres. Pinot Gris was the primary driver of growth with exports up 32 per cent to 38 million litres. The most prominent white variety, Chardonnay, was flat at 170 million litres. Meanwhile, total red wine exports declined by 3 per cent to 383 million litres. The three major red varieties all recorded declines Shiraz (down 1 per cent to 182 million litres), Cabernet Sauvignon (down 7 per cent to 91 million litres) and Merlot (down 5 per cent to 53 million litres). Sparkling exports increased by 3 per cent to 12 million litres, which was the first growth since October Total Exports by Price Segment The trends through the price segments were definitive with growth in the premium segments above A$7.50 per litre and in the below A$2.50 segment and declines in the segments in between. Driven by bulk wine exports, the under A$2.50 per litre segment increased by 4 per cent to 411 million litres. Some of this wine would ve been exported as bottled wine in previous years and this was a major reason for weakness in the middle price segments. The A$2.50 to A$4.99 segment declined by 5 per cent to 209 million litres while the A$5.00 to A$7.49 segment declined by 6 per cent to 37 million litres. 7

Commentary (continued) With the help of a falling currency helping pricing, the US was the exception, with the combined A$2.50 to A$7.49 up by 4 per cent to 101 million litres. The premium wine segments showed some strong results. The A$7.50 to A$9.99 per litre segment increased by 8 per cent to 15.0 million litres, while the above A$10.00 segment grew by a slower 6 per cent to 16.7 million litres. The trends in this segment were somewhat reversed from previous years. China, which was previously driving the premium category (above A$7.50 for this analysis), recorded a decline of 13 per cent to 6.1 million litres. The US, which had been in decline even before the global recession, increased for the second consecutive year up 18 per cent to 4.5 million litres. Hong Kong (up 33 per cent to 3.3 million litres), Singapore (up 63 per cent to 2.7 million litres), United Kingdom (up 13 per cent to 2.4 million litres), Malaysia (up 23 per cent 1.5 million litres) and New Zealand (up 45 per cent to 1.0 million litres) all grew at double digit rates. Canada (down 4 per cent to 4.0 million litres) was the only destination, besides China, above 1 million litres to record a decline in exports above A$7.50 per litre. Total Exports by Destination The top five destinations by volume for Australian wine remained unchanged during the year. Australia s two biggest markets recorded contrasting outcomes, with exports to the United Kingdom increasing by 1 per cent to 245 million litres. Meanwhile record wine production in the United States was a major contributor behind Australian exports declining by 8 per cent to 164 million litres. A surge in bulk shipments to Canada contributed to exports increasing by 20 per cent to 60 million litres. Austerity measures in China continued to impact the imported wine market and Australian exports declined by 5 per cent to 37 million litres. Exports to Germany increased by 2 per cent to 33 million litres. United Kingdom The UK remained the number one destination for Australian wine. The destination also doubles as a hub for wine shipments, with a relatively small share (but significant) amount of wine distributed from the UK around Europe. Total wine exports increased by 1 per cent to 245 million litres. Although the excise elevator has now run its course, the market continues to absorb the higher costs and margins are still tight. As a result, more wine is shipped in bulk containers. Just 15 per cent of wine exported to the UK is in bottles, down from 19 per cent the previous year. The average value of bottled wine increased significantly, up 13 per cent to A$4.19 per litre. A reduction in lower-priced bottled wine which is now likely to be shipped in bulk containers and solid growth in price segments above A$5.00 per litre are both contributing factors in this growth. The strongest growth was in the above A$10.00 segment, which increased by 29 per cent to 1.1 million litres. The A$7.50 to A$9.99 segment was also strong, up 15 per cent to 1.3 million litres, while the A$5.00 to A$7.49 segment grew at a slightly lower rate, up 12 per cent to 3.4 million litres. Although still a long way from their peak, these higher valued exports are tracking at two year highs. 8

Commentary (continued) United States Three major wine market trends in the US are having a strong influence on the Australian export figures. These are 1) record domestic production; 2) consumers demanding finer wines; and 3) the decline of the Australian currency. Two consecutive record-high US production years have been the primary driver behind the volume decline of Australian exports. Total exports declined by 8 per cent to 164 million litres. Although both bottled and bulk wine exports declined, the biggest decline was in the bulk wine segment down 10 per cent to 57 million litres. Bottled wine exports declined at a slower 6 per cent to 107 million litres. The weaker Australian currency is likely to have helped the average value increase. The variance of the currency has a stronger effect as the price of wine decreases and there is less scope to use margin to absorb higher costs while buyers become more price sensitive. Therefore bulk wine is more susceptible to the effects of a volatile currency. The lower Australian currency helped the average value of bulk exports increase by 4 per cent to A$0.96 per litre despite the headwinds of two large vintages in the US and elevated stock levels in Australia. The bottled average value also increased, up 6 per cent to A$3.49 per litre but the drivers are more complex. The increase in the average value of bottled exports was driven by an increase in higher priced wine exports. The weakened dollar is likely to be the reason that exports under A$2.49 per litre declined by 83 per cent to 2.4 million litres. Some of these wines are now being sold in the A$2.50 to A$4.99 segment which increased by 5 per cent to 96 million litres. In what may be in response to the premiumisation of the US market, the upper price segments grew strongly. The A$7.50 to A$9.99 segment increased by 19 per cent to 2.8 million litres while the above A$10.00 segment increased by 14 per cent to 1.7 million litres. In contrast, the A$5.00 to A$7.49 segment, which has been declining for seven years, recorded another year of decline. The segment declined by 17 per cent to 4.2 million. In volume terms, exports above A$5.00 per litre declined however in value terms it increased by 4 per cent to A$80 million. Canada The export figures to Canada are marked by a significant increase in bulk wine exports. Total wine exports increased by 20 per cent to 60 million litres. Bottled wine exports were flat at 30 million litres while bulk wine exports increased by 53 per cent to 29 million litres. According to Global Trade Atlas, Canada imported 101 million litres of bulk wine in the year to July Some of this wine is labelled as Cellared in Canada and in some provinces also commonly used for wine sold in the grocery channel that has restrictions around labelling of vintage and variety. During the year, Australia increased its share of Canadian bulk wine imports from 19 per cent to 27 per cent. Australia took share off competitors through a lowering of prices from the previous year. The Australian average value declined from US$1.01 to US$0.78 per litre. Chile and the US also recorded an increase in bulk imports which was accompanied by a decline in the average value. 9

Commentary (continued) There was movement among the price segments for bottled wine despite the average value increasing by a marginal 0.3 per cent to A$5.13 per litre. The two lowest priced segments declined. The under A$2.49 per litre was down 11 per cent to 0.2 million litres and the A$2.50 to A$4.99 segment was down marginally to 18 million litres. The strongest growth was recorded in the A$5.00 to A$7.49 segment, up by 4 per cent to 8.1 million although this was somewhat offset by a decline in the A$7.50 to A$9.99 segment of 7 per cent to 2.5 million litres. There was growth in the above A$10.00 segment, up 3 per cent to 1.5 million litres. This segment looks to have stabilised over the past two years after declining by more than a third in the years after the global recession. Figure 4: Bottled exports to China by price segment China The effect of the much publicised austerity measures by the Chinese government are evident in the export figures and particularly so at the premium end of the market. Total wine exports to China declined by 5 per cent to 37 million litres. The decline was shared by both bottled wine (down 4 per cent to 34 million litres) and bulk wine exports (down 12 per cent to 3.2 million litres). The average value of bottled wine declined by 8 per cent to A$6.13 per litre. Figure 4 illustrates the two lowest priced segments, under A$2.49 and the A$2.50 to A$4.99, have resumed growth. The higher priced segments remain subdued but appear to have stabilised after the initial impact of the austerity measures. Looking at the annual bottled export figures, the two lowest priced segments increased. The under A$2.49 per litre was up 55 per cent to 1.5 million litres and the A$2.50 to A$4.99 segment increased by 2 per cent to 18 million litres. The A$5.00 to A$7.49 segment declined by 15 per cent to 7.5 million and the A$7.50 to A$9.99 segment declined by 7 per cent to 2.1 million litres. The strongest decline was recorded in the above A$10.00 segment which declined by 16 per cent to 4.0 million litres. According to Chinese customs data, most countries experienced declines in bottled wine exports in the last year except for Spain, the US and Chile. In the above US$10.00 per litre segment the only exceptions are New Zealand and Spain. Australia s performance in this premium category, although down, was relatively better than that 10

Commentary (continued) of France, our major competitor in the Chinese market (French wine is down 18 per cent to 6.9 million litres). Among the top sources of premium wine, the decline in percentage terms was at the lower end (see Figure 5). This result may be more notable considering that Australia is relatively more weighted towards more expensive wines, Australia accounts for a 23 per cent share of imports above US$10.00 segment compared to a 13 per cent share of all bottled wine imports into China. Figure 5: Bottled wine imports into China above US$10.00 per litre by source Hong Kong Despite the down-turn in China, exports to Hong Kong remained strong. Total exports increased by 9 per cent to 7.5 million litres. In a sign the island may be immune from the austerity of the mainland, the average value of bottled shipments increased by 19 per cent to A$13.02 per litre. This propelled the total value of exports to a record A$94 million. A strong auction market is likely to be helping deliver these strong results. The average value increased due to a combination of declines in the lower priced segments and an increase in the upper segments. Bottled exports under A$5.00 per litre declined by 14 per cent to 2.3 million litres. In contrast the A$5.00 to A$7.49 increased by 6 per cent to 1.5 million litres, the A$7.50 to A$9.99 segment increased by 67 per cent to 1.2 million litres and the above A$10.00 segment increased by 20 per cent to 2.2 million litres. Best Performing Destinations The best performing destinations were Hong Kong (up A$21 million to A$94 million), Singapore (up A$14 million to A$55.4 million), Italy (up A$8.8 million to A$11.5 million), Canada (up A$7.8 million to A$181 million), Malaysia (up A$6.3 million to A$34.7 million), Finland (up A$3.9 million to A$13.0 million), United Arab Emirates (up A$2.1 million to A$15.5 million) and Taiwan (up A$1.4 million to A$10.6 million). 11

Notes & Definitions Export Approvals: Wine approved by the AGWA for export on specified dates. Exports reported in this document refer to the date wine is shipped and not the date of approval. Note that the A$ FOB value of wine reported in this document may differ from export values reported by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The divergence between the two values derives from differences between the AGWA and ABS in the method of converting the value of exports denominated in foreign currency to A$. In the case of Australia, the exporter makes the conversion when submitting wine for export approval while the ABS converts the value on the day of shipment, at the daily conversion rate. With the AGWA method, it is expected that some of the conversions will occur at hedged rates while this does not occur with the ABS method. When the Australian exchange rate is moving significantly the alternative methods will result in diverging valuations. Volumes reported by the AGWA and ABS differ only marginally due to the approval versus shipment basis of reporting as well as marginal differences in scope and definition. : Moving Annual Total - refers to the twelve months ending with the nominated month. : Is calculated as the percentage change in the for the immediate past 13 months compared to the preceding 13 months. Formula: = ((current - preceding )/preceding ) x 100 AUD: Australian dollars FOB: Free on board' value of the wine, where the point of valuation is where goods are placed on board the international carrier, at the border of the exporting country. The FOB value includes production and other costs up until placement on the international carrier but excludes international insurance and transport costs. Country: In most instances, this indicates where the wine is consumed. In some instances, it may be the country at which the wine is off-loaded for bottling and/or trans-shipment to the country of final consumption. 42

Notes & Definitions (continued) Still wine: Still wine in bottles, casks, flagons or bulk containers. Bulk: Wine shipped for repackaging elsewhere. This may involve containers with a capacity of 20 litres or more but will most often mean large shipping containers of size ranging between and litres. Cask or Soft packs: Plastic containers within cardboard outers usually carrying between 2 and 20 litres. Flagons: Glass containers holding 2 litres or more. Bottles: Glass containers holding less than 2 litres. Alternative Packaging: Includes: Flagon, Tetra-pak, PET and Aluminium Red Wine: Amounts reported may or may not include both dry red wine and rose White wine: Amounts reported may or may not include both dry and sweet white wine Fermented sparkling: Sparkling wine in which the effervescence is produced naturally through secondary fermentation in the bottle. 43
