1 Riverland RIVERLAND VINTAGE OVERVIEW Vintage Report Overview of vintage statistics The 2005 growing season was almost perfect in the Riverland. Although there were rain events in both December and January, the follow-up weather was dry and there were very few disease problems with either downy or powdery mildew. It was a relatively cool season with none of the extreme periods of heat that we have experienced in the past two years; consequently the quality was good for all varieties. Once again the industry was caught slightly off-guard, with varieties ripening together and causing some intake delays. This resulted in some quite high Baumé fruit being taken. Jim Caddy Phylloxera and Grape Industry Board River Murray Morgan Waikerie Kilometres Road Registered Vineyard Riverland GI Region Barmera The Riverland produced 482,214 tonnes this year another 10% higher than the record 2004 harvest (see graph on page 107). The total preferred crush was 60,000 tonnes less than the actual, with almost all of the surplus being in red varieties. The average purchase value per tonne for the major red varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot dropped by around $50 per tonne. The Chardonnay average purchase value dropped by nearly $200 per tonne, while the other major whites were around the same. Given the increased production but slightly lower average prices, total income to growers was very similar to last year, and the total value of grapes from the region was $231 million, compared with $234 million last year a drop of less than 1%. The forecast for the Riverland is for preferred intake of red varieties to remain at around 240,000 tonnes (less than was crushed in 2005), and for whites to remain at around 220,000 tonnes (about 10% more than this year s production). Estimated intake is higher than preferred intake for Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon in every harvest year, while Shiraz shows a small shortfall. There has been a further downward revision of 20,000 tonnes in the preferred intake figures for red varieties since the 2004 survey. Berri Loxton Renmark South Australia Victoria It is important to note that these intake figures do not necessarily correspond to the region s production potential. A further 500 hectares were planted in the Riverland in 2004, giving a total area of 21,141 hectares. Based on the current vineyard area, and using estimated yield figures of 21t/ha for reds (except Cabernet Sauvignon 20t/ha), and 25 t/ha for whites (except Riesling 20t/ha and Colombard 28t/ha), it is estimated that the production from the region in 2008 will be 473,000 tonnes (see table 13.7). This means a shortfall of around 20,000 tonnes compared with preferred intake for that year. The major shortfalls are estimated to be in Merlot (11,000t), Shiraz, (9,000t), Colombard (16,000t) and Chardonnay (8,000t). 97
