4 August 23, 2012 BURGUNDY 2005 Burgundy 2005 Domaines M - Q Tasted in London in January 2007 Tasted on other occasions- see date & place in italics Frédéric Magnien Gevrey-Chambertin Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes There is the feel of ripe fruit with depth of flavour showing on both nose and palate. Not that complex but has charm. Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos Sorbé The sweet mix of mulberry and strawberry has charm, the flavours are ripe, quite fleshy and the mid freshness adds to the bright feeling on the fruit. Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Perrières The nose has power and structure but also a racy more elegant feel. The fruit is rich and the palate has underlying depth; a complex mix of black and red fruits comes through on the finish. Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Aux Brulées The powerful mix of fruit, very mulberry dominated, gives richness to both nose and palate. On the palate the fruit flavours are layered adding to the complexity, powerful structure on the finish. Tasted at Lincoln s Inn February Mainly black fruits are in evidence giving richness on the nose and weight of flavour on the palate. Although the ripeness of the fruit shows at first the firmness of the tannins come into play tightening the finish and holding back the fruit. There is a lot at the back still to show. Tasted in Lincoln s Inn November The nose has black fruits rich and deep the palate the fleshy richness of ripe fruit. Layers of fruit the sweetness yet freshness give complexity and although there is structure the tannins are fine not holding back the fruit. It fills out at the back the finish has depth and black fruited richness. Echézeaux Grand Cru The power, richness and depth of fruit is well balanced by a mid palate freshness. Mouthfilling and succulent with first black fruit and then red, the rich depth is not overpowering, complexity and elegance shine through. Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 4

5 BURGUNDY 2005 August 23, 2011 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru The richness on the nose has a voluptuous feel and this power of ripe fruit shows on the palate. The fruit mix is complex but black fruits tend to dominate at the moment. Richness shows on the finish which has more red fruits in evidence. Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru Opulence is the best word for the nose but the ripe power has freshness and this brings out the fruit fragrances. Layers of flavour give real complexity and within the lush fruit is a mailed fist ensuring structure. Château de la Maltroye Chassagne-Montrachet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos du Château The fruit on the nose has fatness, lots of fleshy melon. The ripeness is balanced by mid freshness and towards the back the acidity feels hard and slightly out of balance. Domaine Prince Florent de Mérode Ladoix-Serrigny Corton Bressandes Grand Cru There is a complex mix of black fruits dominating the nose, all quite sweet and lush. The supple fleshiness is misleading as the tannins form a backbone giving excellent structure to mid and end palate. Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru The woodland violets give a fragrant feel to the black fruits and this light flowery character comes through on the palate. The fruit is rich, supple and fleshy but towards the back a lighter feel returns giving a flowing elegance. 6 August 23, 2012 BURGUNDY 2005 Crisp apple and flint on the nose lift the fruit fragrances. The mid palate has a riper feel but the sweetness is soon overtaken by renewed freshness that firms up the finish. Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons Very ripe fruit dominates the nose, fat and full and lacking real crispness. The palate is fresher but it still has the fleshiness of ripe fruit. Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos Ripe apple and greengage on the nose give a depth and weight of flavour. The palate has a crisper feel but it is still fruit rich. Lots of mineral and flint comes through towards the back. Domaine Alain Michelot Nuits-Saint-Georges Nuits-Saint-Georges Vieilles Vignes The mix of red fruits, very mulberry dominated, is fragrant and sweet. Freshness on the palate gives a lighter feel and there is an elegant feel on the finish Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Porrets-St-Georges The nose has a rich feel, lots of ripe raspberry and wild strawberry. The tannins are supple ensuring a fleshy character and the finish is full and succulent. Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru aux Champs Perdrix Flowery red fruits give charm to both nose and palate; there is sweetness at the start but firmer more structured tannins show on the mid palate and they tend to close down the finish at the moment. Domaine de Montille Volnay Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes Tasted at Leathersellers April 2010 The mix of fresh fruit and honeyed richness all adds to the complexity. Lots of ripe flavours fill out the nose and give flesh on the palate. The ripe greengage and melon is underpinned by fresher apple and lime that brightens the back palate. 7 BURGUNDY 2005 August 23, 2011 The nose is fresh with a mix of greengage and apple. The mid palate has a honeyed richness with towards the back enough freshness to balance. There is just a hint of oxidation on the finish. Meursault Les Tessons Tasted at Dyers Hall July 2011 There is a lot of rich fruit on the nose ripe greengage backed by melon. The power and richness of flavour is balanced by apple freshness that lifts the fruit on the mid palate and gives an attractive brightness to the long finish. Beaune Blanc 1er Cru les Aigrots Floral charm, the nose has a racy mix of fragrances. The fruit is layered on the palate, all so fresh, lime driven and backed by minerality. There is a creamy feel on the long finish. Pommard 1er Cru Pézerolles The nose has fragrance that gives the feeling of elegance. The fruit on the palate has sweetness yet is fresh, light at the start, but fuller, richer towards the finish. Beaune 1er Cru Les Sizies Fragrant red fruits backed by sweetness on the nose are echoed on the palate. The fruit has depth and roundness with a tighter feel towards the back closing down the fruit at the moment. Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves There is complexity of fruit mix on the nose, first wild strawberry, then raspberry and then mulberry. The sweetness on the palate is not overpowering and there is the feeling of lightness and elegance towards the finish. Volnay 1er Cru Les Champans The ripeness of the fruit gives lushness to the nose. The palate has fleshiness but the succulent red fruits are backed by acidity so ensuring brightness at the end. Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds The oak shows on both nose and palate at the moment but behind it is a lot of powerful ripe red fruit, the lush power is balanced by a firm structure Pommard 1er Cru Pézerolles The light fragrant fruit on the nose is misleading as the palate is fatter with a ripe fleshy feel. 8 August 23, 2012 BURGUNDY 2005 The fruit is powerful and deep with a mix of black and red fruits, the black fruits dominating at the moment. The fleshy feel comes from lush ripe fruit but there is structure, firmness on the mid palate, but then freshness returns so lengthening the finish. Corton Pougets Grand Cru The nose is power packed with fleshy, ripe, red and black fruits. Behind the richness is freshness giving complexity to the flavours and an elegant feel to the finish. Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru A powerful mix of flavours, fleshy and ripe on both nose and palate; the fruit is succulent and ripe, the sweetness exaggerated by the roundness of the tannins. The structure firms up towards the finish leaving a bright feel to the fruit. Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Thorey The nose is very dominated by red fruits, some raspberry then loganberry but the palate has more bramble showing. The depth of flavour is well balanced by the mid freshness and the finish has a fleshy, richness. Domaine Bernard Moreau Chassagne-Montrachet Chassagne-Montrachet The fruit on the nose has a fresh racy feel and is backed by hints of spicy oak. Fresh greengage shows at the start of the palate with a sweeter, richer mix towards the back. Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru les Maltroie The rich creaminess on the nose rather belies the freshness underneath. Both fruit and acidity are layered on the palate and give raciness and complexity. Volnay 1er Cru Santenots Ripe red berried fruits give sweetness to the nose. There is an attractive weight of fruit, more red than black, the richness gives plumpness and this tends to hide the complexity. 9 BURGUNDY 2005 August 23, 2011 The fragrance on the nose is a mix of apple and flint. Crispness dominates the palate but underneath it the fruit feels quite sweet. Chablis Grand Cru Valmur The nose is deep, the ripe apple and lime overlaid with minerals and chalk. Ripe fruit on the palate, full in the middle but freshness is there and this shows to good effect on the finish bringing out both complexity and minerality. Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos Richer flavours, a mix of apple and greengage backed by slate and mineral give the feeling of complexity and interest. The palate has an attractive mix of ripe fruit and crisp flintiness. Domaine Moreau-Naudet Chablis Chablis Pargues Vieilles Vignes There is sweet fruit on the nose and a ripe richness on the palate Behind this are crisp mineral driven flavours but there overall feeling is one of sweetness. Chablis 1er Cru Les Fôrets The ripe greengage on both nose and palate has a flint lime character that adds lightness and fragrance to the palate. Chablis Grand Cru Valmur The nose is fat and full, a touch over heavy but mineral and lime show on the palate giving a crisper feel. The finish is has lots minerally shale. Domaine Bernard Morey Chassagne-Montrachet Saint-Aubin Blanc Light fragrant fruit is backed by minerally flint. The palate is fresh, very green lime but behind the crispness is sweetness of fruit. Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Baudines The fruit feels ripe; more greengages than melon but behind the sweetness there is freshness that enhances and lengthens the flavours. 10 August 23, 2012 BURGUNDY 2005 A fleshy mix of grapefruit and greengage, the weight of fruit fills the nose and fleshes out the palate. Minerally freshness adds complexity and gives the palate length and a more elegant feel. Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Embrazées Power shows on the nose and the palate is rich and succulent. The fruit has complexity as well as depth; the honeyed ripeness is so well balanced by citrus peel acidity. Santenay Rouge Vieille Vignes Red berried fragrances give the feeling of lightness on the nose. On taste the fragrance persists, lots of red fruit intertwined with a mineral flintiness. Domaine Marc Morey Chassagne-Montrachet Bourgogne Blanc The rich fruit mix on the nose shows well on the palate. There is a mix of greengage and melon, sweet and honeyed but this fatness is refreshed by the acidity leaving the end with a fresh feel. Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc The fruit on the nose is sweet and ripe but there is a mineral freshness that balances the sweetness. Intense and pure in the mouth, a creamy richness developes, lots of greengage comes through on the finish. Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc 1er Cru Virondot The rich fruit on the nose has a floral perfume, a bit overshadowed by a touch of oak at the moment. The balance between ripeness and mineral freshness is excellent; the lively freshness balances the sweet fruit power. Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny Nuits-Saint-Georges 1 er Cru Clos de La Maréchale Flowery red fruit fragrances show on the nose and although the nose feels light, the palate is rich and the fruit fleshy and ripe. 11 BURGUNDY 2005 August 23, 2011 The sweetness and richness of the year is very much in evidence on both nose and palate. Black fruits dominate with layers of bramble and black cherry enriching with underneath there is some lovely ripe and rich mulberry. The mix of fruits lingers on the long finish. Domaine Georges Mugneret et Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanée Vosne-Romanée Light fragrant cherry and mulberry show on both nose and palate. The fruit is sweet, the tannins ripe but the mid freshness gives the feel more of racy elegance than meaty depth. Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots The nose is very dominated by oak so it is difficult to get at the fruit. Firm and rather tight at the start of the palate but sweeter fruit does come through on mid and end palate. 2 nd sample Although the nose and palate are firm there is sweetness and this gives fleshiness to the fruit and roundness to the tannins. The black fruits are quite dominant but there are hints of mulberry which adds to the complexity. Echézeaux Grand Cru Lush strawberry is intertwined with plum and bramble, an exciting complex mix of flavours. The palate has depth of fruit, a suppleness that comes from ripe tannins, but there is freshness on the finish giving brightness. Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet Chassagne-Montrachet There is an attractive minerality about the fruit on the nose; behind this is richness, ripeness of flavour. A mix of greengage and melon comes through towards the finish giving richness of flavour. Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Champgains Lots of honeydew melon packs the nose and this ensures an attractive sweetness, the same mix of ripe fruit and depth of flavour shows on the palate. 12 August 23, 2012 BURGUNDY 2005 Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc The ripeness of the fruit gives a richness on both nose and palate, the melon fleshiness is nicely balanced by apple crispness ; sweetness yet freshness on the finish. Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers The fruit on the nose is deep, profound, the ripeness balanced by a mineral crispness. The mix of fruits on the palate adds to the complexity, all overlaid with apple fresh flavours. Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes Richness and depth of fruit give the nose its fullness and sweetness. The ripe melon on the palate is refreshed by crisp greengage ensuring complexity of flavour. Mineral freshness shows towards the back, lifting and lengthening the fruit. Tasted at Leathersellers April The mix of grapefruit and greengage gives a fresh appeal to the nose and a bright start to the palate. There is sweeter fruit filling out the mid palate and giving richness towards the back. Tasted at Mercers Hall October Although it seems very mature on the nose, lots of ripe pineapple there is fresh apple and lime on the mid palate that lifts the flavours. The lovely complexity comes from the mix of sweet greengage and fresh apple giving depth on the back palate. Tasted at the Leathersellers May The nose has some nice fresh flavours with richer greengage giving weight on the palate. It is fuller towards the back richer melon and although the back palate feels fresh there is just a hint of maturity coming through on the finish. Santenay Rouge Les Champs Claude Light and fragrant, the raspberry flavours are overlaid with wild strawberry. The palate feels light; the red berried fruits are fresh and flowery. Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge The nose has an attractive mix of red fruits, fresh and flowery but at the back there is a richer feel. The flavours on the palate have sweetness and are very raspberry fragrant. Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge 1 er Cru Les Macherelles The red fruit has a minty character, a mix of raspberry and cherry. There is sweetness on the palate but fresher, flowery fragrances come through on the finish. Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 12

13 BURGUNDY 2005 August 23, 2011 Nicholas Potel Nuits-Saint-Georges Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru Valozières The nose has lots of flowery fruits, more red fruit in evidence than black. The flavours on the palate have lightness and fragrance, quite fresh but there is a sweeter feel to the finish. Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Chaignots Rich fruit shows on the nose, lovely depth and complexity of flavour. The tannins are ripe ensuring that the palate feels supple but there is some acidity that brightens the finish. Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru The fruit is more red fruit than black, raspberry and wild strawberry overlaid by flowery fragrances. The palate is power packed, ripe and fleshy yet fresh and there is real concentration of fruit on the finish. Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru Power packed, voluptuous and fleshy, the nose is sweet and rich, the palate rounded and supple. There is mid acidity that gives brightness to the fruit adding to the complexity and length. Domaine de la Pousse d Or Volnay Volnay 1er Cru En Caillerets Clos des 60 Ouvrées Squashy red fruits fill the nose. The fruit salad of flavour has an attractive mix of wild strawberry and raspberry, all feels very lush but behind the sweet fruit there is acidity giving freshness to the finish. Cave de Prissé Prissé Mâcon Prissé Les Clochettes Very light, flowery; there is fresh lime and greengage on both nose and palate. Bourgogne Chardonnay Les Belles Roches Master of Wine: Derek Smedley Master of Wine: Derek Smedley

14 August 23, 2012 BURGUNDY 2005 The nose is light, quite fragrant and although very fresh and crisp there is a sweeter feel towards the back Saint Véran Les Pierres Blanches Crispness shows on both nose and palate, whilst the fruit is light there is a refreshing fragrance and a sweeter feel to the finish. Château de Puligny-Montrachet Puligny-Montrachet Monthelie Blanc The nose has herbal, vegetal richness with lots of sweetness. The palate echoes this but the fatness is to some extent balanced by some mid acidity, on finish the fatness returns. Puligny-Montrachet Both the nose and the palate are heavy with a fatness to the fruit and although there are hints of lime they do not lighten the heavy somewhat vegetal character. Meursault Fat and full, there is a vegetal heaviness to the fruit, the melon flavours are overpowered by ripe pear; the fruit towards the back lacks complexity and is flabby and fleshy. Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Poruzots The nose has weight of fruit, a rich mix of greengage and grapefruit but underneath is some herbal earthiness. The fleshiness is balanced by mineral freshness ensuring more vitality on the finish. Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières It has the fatness of many Meursault on the nose and coming through on the palate is a mix of honey and grapefruit. The end richness is lightened by some mineral freshness. Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Grandes Vignes The lightness on the nose is misleading as on palate there is a good weight of fruit, more black than red; rather let down by the dryness on the finish.
