1 MN WIC PROGRAM Statewide Monthly Participation for Asian Non-Hispanic by Cultural Identities, Months of Prenatal Participation & Breastfeeding Amount COUNTS/MONTHLY PARTICIPATION ( ) Report Overview A statewide, and agency, count and percentage for the specified participation month of postpartum women whose race/ethnicity is either Asian Non-Hispanic or Latino (202) or Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander Non-Hispanic or Latino (204) and who have a Cultural Identity selected for State Use Question #6. Breastfeeding and Non-breastfeeding women are categorized based on whether they were on WIC during their pregnancy. Breastfeeding women are further categorized based on whether they were counted as Fully, Mostly or Some Breastfeeding. Some uses include: Obtain a monthly count and percentage of Asian postpartum women by Cultural Identify for an agency or the state. Obtain a monthly count and percentage of Asian breastfeeding vs. non-breastfeeding women by Cultural Identity for an agency or the state. Obtain a monthly count and percentage of Asian breastfeeding women who are fully, mostly or some-breastfeeding by Cultural Identity for an agency or the state. Obtain a monthly count and percentage of Asian postpartum women by Cultural Identity who were on WIC for more than 3 months, less than 3 months, or not on WIC during their pregnancy for an agency or the state. Compare agency to state percentages. Notes This report can only be run for months in which End-of-Month (EOM) has been completed. Some-breastfeeding women more than 6 months postpartum are counted when their infant is issued benefits for the participation month.

2 The output includes all participants who have a Cultural Identity selected for State Use Question #6 and have a self-identified race/ethnicity of either: Asian Non-Hispanic or or Latino (202) Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander Non-Hispanic or Latino (204) Participants of these races/ethnicity who do not have a Cultural Identity selected are not included in the counts. Similar information is provided in the following two reports: By Race/Ethnicity: Statewide Monthly Participation by Race/Ethnicity, Months of Prenatal Participation & Breastfeeding Amount The Asian NH Total for an agency may not match the Asian NH since this Cultural Identity report only includes participants with a Cultural Identity selected. The No Answer to State Use Question #6 (Cultural Identity) template can be used to identify participants who are Asian NH and do not have a selected Cultural Identity. By Black Non-Hispanic Cultural Identity: Statewide Monthly Participation for Black Non-Hispanic by Cultural Identity, Months of Prenatal Participation & Breastfeeding Amount Collection for State Use Question #6 is optional. Agencies with few participants are likely due to transfers since State Use Questions transfer between agencies. Some participants may have an incorrect Cultural Identity selected (ex: Asian with Somali or Somali American selected). If it is believed that this selection is incorrect, these participants can be identified using the Currently Certified BF Women template that lists participant details such as State WIC ID, their race/ethnicity and their Cultural Identity. Since this report identifies only the most recent postpartum record, it should be run for no more than 10 months in the past. If using to identify trends, the output should be saved if it will be needed for future reference. Months of Prenatal Participation Category (MOPPCAT) is based on the difference between the participant s Pregnancy Record Date and their Actual Date of Delivery: On WIC 3 or More Mos. (Pregnancy) difference is between 90 and 300 days Page 2

(Pregnancy) difference is between 1 and < 90 days Not on WIC during Pregnancy difference is < 1, > 300 or participant s Pregnancy Record Date is blank The sum of the TOTAL MOPPCAT counts may not match the Asian NH Total count due to postpartum records that have more than one Pregnancy Record Date associated with the same Postpartum ID. The following has been identified as resulting in these data anomalies: 1) one-day certs corrected with VOCs; and 2) women s records changing from BF to NBF on same date as a pseudo-cert. Parentheses indicate the percentage within the total for each Cultural Identity column. Please see the last page of this document for a diagram of how to read this report. (****) indicates there were fewer than 30 participants in the denominator. Unlike MDH annual reports, the numbers for agencies with fewer than 5 participants are not suppressed. Please keep in mind that these data could be considered private since participants could potentially be identified. The report output is formatted to download to an 8 x 11.5 inch PDF (landscape). 8 Technical Notes Notes Participants with R/E codes of 202 and 204 who don t have a Cultural Identity were not included in the report output in an Unknown column because this would have resulted in all agencies displaying in the report. All agencies with participants with a selection were included to ensure total counts were accurate (assuming none of the participants had more than one Pregrcddate anomaly). This report was created using the Black NH report as a template. (The Black NH report was created using a crosstab template. The Cultural Identity field (STATEUSECODE.Description) was placed in the column header and they automatically displayed across the top of the page) Therefore, additions to the selections will not require corrections to this report (however, formatting to download to an 8.5 x 11 landscape may require adjustment). Since this is a cross-tab report, individual formulas only had to be created for two sections in each row: Aisan NH Total and Cultural Identity columns. Different formulas were used for MN and Agency. The Asian NH and Black NH reports were kept separate (instead of creating a two-tab report) since it would have required all of the queries to be recreated along with all of the Variables and Formulas. Instead, they were developed as separate reports, which allowed the use of the Black NH as a template and thus only required a change of R/E codes in the queries. The dimensions were unmerged for Statewicid, Pregrcdate and Actdelivdate; otherwise, a MULTIVALUE error was occurring. This may have been due to the Pregrcddate anomaly. Variables were used in order to help simplify the formulas and define the where portion of the formula. The statewide race/ethnicity MOPPCAT report was used as a template for this report. All of the same variables could be used. Two queries were used to identify both BF and NBF participants. This was necessary because the system was erring out when trying to identify participants to include and also find the max PPID if applicable. The first set of queries (PTotalB and PTotalN) identifies the postpartum participants based on BF or NBF. The second set of queries (MTotalB and MTotalN) identifies the max ID for those participants identified by the first set of queries. To be consistent with the MDH annual reports, NBF participants include BF participants with Amt BF = 4. In order for the Non-Breastfeeding count to match, all CASELOADCOUNT.Amountbreastfed values were included (1, 2,4, and 5) as well as BF with Amt BF = 4. 19 How to Read the Statewide Monthly Participation for Asian NH by Cultural Identity, MOPPCAT and BF Amount Report Sum of counts within matching boxes should equal the total number indicated by the matching Sum of percentages within matching boxes should equal 100. Examples: The sum of the MINNESOTA TOTALS row should match the Asian NH Total. The sum of the MOPPCAT rows should match the Asian NH Total for that row. The sum of the MOPPCAT Totals should match the MINNESOTA TOTALS for that column.* The sum of the Postpartum BF and NBF Women within the MOPPCAT should match that MOPPCAT total for that column.
