7 Provenance Two cellars anchor this auction The Coastal Cellar and The Essex Collection. Both cellars offer deep holdings of vintage Bordeaux and Burgundy with unexpected and thrilling wines threaded throughout. They will challenge the buyer to look past bin soil, capsule corrosion, and label losses, the superficial ravages of time. These collections have benefited from deep, extended slumbers under the cover of decades; slumbers supporting the slow and graceful evolution of what is inside the bottle, but not so much what is on the outside. A compelling commonality of the collectors is that they meticulously and joyfully collected cases were purchased in celebration of personal and professional milestones, and in some instances the acquisitions themselves were events in their own right. The Coastal Cellar and the Essex Collection will drive you to go beyond perfect appearances and sometimes, there is nothing more intriguing than a bottle spirited up from the cellar that stands apart from the pristine elegance of the table and invites you into its story. 37

8 The Coastal Cellar With the gift of a bottle of 1964 Ausone a collector was born? Maybe. What is certain is that a deep love of wine unfolded over the course of the 1980s spurred through travel, friends, and acquaintances in Bordeaux and Burgundy. Provenance, so often in the form of oral history, is carefully rendered in a sheaf of accounting ledger papers detailing the purchase of almost every bottle in the cellar, from equal parts retailers, auctioneers and producers, many cases purchased on futures. The earliest ledger acquisition date? That single bottle of Chateau Ausone Maintained in custom-built cellars and removed by Skinner specialists. Part II of this collection will be offered in our June online auction. 1 Chateau Haut Brion 1959 Pessac Leognan, 1er Cru Classe u: one 4cm, one 4.5cm, capsule oxidation and discoloration, labels stained and faded 2 bottles $1,600-2,400 2 Chateau Haut Brion 1961 Pessac Leognan, 1er Cru Classe u: 4.5cm, capsule corrosion and discoloration, light label fading and staining, slight nick R. The wine still saturates the palate and lingers for a remarkable length of time. 12 36 Les Forts de Latour 1982 Pauillac u: all into neck, label staining from tissue adhesion Here is an example of why a second wine is well worth buying in a great vintage. Unfortunately, I do not have any of the 1990, and I couldn t find any to purchase, but I bought plenty of the 1982, although I never dreamed it would be drinking so great at age 27. Much lighter around the edge than its bigger sibling, it exhibits an explosive nose of charcoal, black fruits, herbs, and soil undertones. Full-bodied and fleshy with no hard edges (which is exactly the way it performed over the last years), it probably should be consumed over the next 4-5 years. However, given the fact that it has aged so beautifully for so long, it may last even longer. R. Parker for TWA, 94 pts. 06/09 (owc) $2,100-3, Chateau La Mission Haut Brion 1961 Pessac Leognan u: very top shoulder, oxidation and fading to capsule, heavily glue striped and discolored label, nicking with significant bin scuff, bin soil One of the greatest 1961s, La Mission-Haut- Brion has been fabulous to drink for the last 5-10 years. Where well-stored, this wine will continue to drink well for years. It is more developed and drinkable than the 1959, and it remains a thick, rich, super-aromatic wine with a textbook Graves bouquet of tobacco, barbecued meats, minerals, spices, and sweet red and black fruits. It is dense, fullbodied, alcoholic, and super-rich. This soft, opulently-textured wine makes for a fabulous drink. Absolutely stunning! R. Parker for TWA, 100 pts. 10/94 $2,400-3, Chateau La Mission Haut Brion 1982 Pessac Leognan u: eleven into neck, one bottom neck A monumental wine, this historic La Mission- Haut-Brion was the last vintage made by the descendants of the Woltner family, who had owned this estate for decades prior to selling it to their neighbors, the Dillon family (the American owners of cross-street rival, Chateau Haut-Brion). The 1982 admirably demonstrates the magnificence of La Mission as well as the singularity of this amazing terroir. I had the good fortune of tasting it from barrel (where it was an enormous Graves fruit bomb) and watching it develop more nuances in bottle. At age 30, it remains a majestic, multidimensional, profound Bordeaux with another years of life ahead of it. It s no secret that the great vintages of Bordeaux have levels of fruit extract and depth that go beyond other years. It is this fruit, often referred to as fat or concentration, that takes decades to dissipate and fade. As it does so, the extraordinary aromatic expression of the terroir asserts itself. Remarkably, the 1982 is still in late adolescence and has not yet reached its peak. Early in my career, much of my reputation was established on calling this vintage correctly, but I never in my wildest dreams thought the 1982s would mature as slowly and last as long as some seem capable of doing. One of the handful of perfect wines of the vintage, the La Mission still possesses a remarkably dense ruby/purple color with only a slight garnet and lightening at the edge. The fruit-dominated aromatics reveal lots of cassis, blueberry, scorched earth, black truffle, incense, graphite and high-class, unsmoked cigar tobacco-like notes. Still exhibiting remarkable concentration, enormous body, silky sweet tannin, and no perceptible acidity, the 1982 remains fresh, delineated and supercompelling. A massive La Mission made by the Dewravin family and their winemakers, all of whom were dismissed the following year when the estate was acquired by Haut-Brion, this modern day legend shows no signs of decline. In fact, it may not have yet reached its peak. Anticipated maturity: now R. 18 The Essex Collection In this age of highly coveted and heavily traded bottles, it s rare to come across a cellar sitting silently and patiently. Collected from the 1960s-1980s, this cellar represents a keen Francophile appreciation, while exploring the unsung regions of that time. Consisting of full, never before opened (and often with bands intact prior to inspection) cases of top growth Bordeaux and Burgundy along with an expansive single bottle selection, these bottles rested in a New England cellar temperature but not humidity controlled, resulting in exceptional condition, color, and clarity in the bottles throughout however the exteriors, including labels and cases, did occasionally suffer. Skinner wine specialists, the epitome of romantics, regretfully disposed of some cases when necessary. Unaffixed labels, deterioration, and loss is par for this course. The collection is rooted in New England representing a bygone collective of Northeast-based importers and distributors such as S.S Pierce, Warren B. Strauss, Dunhill and Co., Charles Pappas, and Branded Liquors, underscoring that these bottles are of single-owner origin and have not seen daylight since their original purchase date. Removed by Skinner specialists. Part II of this collection will be offered in our June online auction. 16 Online bidding at

20 72 Chateau Latour 1962 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: top shoulder, capsule corrosion and wear, heavily bin-soiled label Latour continues to be one of the great vintages for this chateau. A dense opaque garnet color reveals amber at the edge, as well as an incredible perfume of cedar wood, balsam, coffee, black fruits, leather, and cigar smoke. The wine is supple and full-bodied, with sweet tannin, glorious levels of fruit and extract, abundant glycerin, and a seductive, truffle-flavored finish. While it has been drinkable for two decades, it is capable of lasting another 20 years. It is a perfectly balanced, exciting Latour that remains undervalued as well as underrated. R. Sweet-saline savor of scallop also already intimated in the nose lends compulsive saliva-inducement to a ravishingly rarified and persistent finish, joined by alkaline, nutty, liquid-floral, and nori seaweed notes for a performance of headscratching subtlety and intrigue. (In case my description hasn t already made clear, we have here inter alia a fantastic sushi wine.) This will be worth following for at least the next 6-8 years, in the course of demonstrating that iconic status as a luxury brand, and elevated (albeit secret) production numbers by no means preclude a wine of understated as well as profound beauty. In a less than perfect Medoc vintage, it has been spectacular since birth, putting on more weight and flesh over the last year. This opaque purple-colored 1998 is close to perfection. The spectacular nose of lead pencil, smoky, mineral, and black currant fruit soars majestically from the glass. The 214 wine is elegant yet profoundly rich, revealing the essence of Lafite s character. The tannin is sweet, and the wine is spectacularly layered yet never heavy. 31 172 Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou 2009 St. Julien, 2eme Cru Classe The 2009 Ducru Beaucaillou will eclipse the brilliant wines produced in 2005, 2003 and It will be interesting to see how the 2009 fares against the 2010 after twenty years of aging, but my money is on the A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot that achieved 13.5% natural alcohol, this inky purple, unctuous wine possesses classic aromas of graphite, creme de cassis, blueberries, violets, licorice and Christmas fruitcake. Full-bodied and intense with Ducru s inimitable elegance and purity, it should firm up in the bottle after 7-10 years of cellaring and last for years. Magnificent! R. The proprietor is not alone in thinking this is the finest Ducru Beaucaillou since the The classic wet rock, creme de cassis, subtle oak and gravelly stoniness of the vineyard come through in this spectacular, full-bodied, gorgeously pure and intense effort. 34 188 Chateau Beychevelle 1989 St. Julien, 4eme Cru Classe u: five into neck, seven bottom neck (owc) $ Chateau Lynch Bages 1985 u: seventeen into neck, seven bottom neck Tasted single blind at the 1985 Bordeaux horizontal, the 1985 Chateau Lynch Bages was pitted against two other wines, both First Growths, and it more than held its own. In many ways it is a forerunner for the brilliant 1989 and 1990 that Jean-Michel crafted, though the 1985 has always been more elegant and comely in style. The nose is impressive after three decades with melted tar, a touch of peppermint and delineated black fruit that seem to gain intensity with each passing moment in the glass. Strangely those secondary notes of bay leaf and dried herbs make way for more primal fruit-derived scents with aeration! The palate does not disappoint. Medium rather than full-bodied, beautifully defined tannins and supremely well-judged acidity, this Lynch-Bages is just so well balanced. Hints of black truffle and sandalwood unfold towards the finish that has disarming purity and great persistence. If you want to know why the 1855 Classification screwed up placing Lynch Bages as a Fifth Growth - taste the wonderful 1985 and then the 1989 and 1990 (though the latter pair have greater longevity). N. Martin for TWA, 95 pts. 07/16 24 demi bottles $1,400-1, Chateau Lynch Bages 2009 Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe Performing even better from bottle than it did from barrel, this appears to be the finest Lynch Bages since the 2000, 1990 and According to the chateau, the 2009 has the highest level of polyphenols ever measured as well as high alcohol (nearly 13.5%). A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest largely Merlot with touches of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it is an expressive, voluptuously textured effort with unctuosity and powerful, juicy, succulent blackberry and black currant flavors, low acids, a layered, massive mouthfeel, but no sense of heaviness or fatigue. This exquisite Lynch Bages should drink well for 30+ years. R. Parker for TWA, 98 pts. 12/11 (owc) $1,100-1, Chateau Lynch Bages 2011 Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe (owc) $750-1, Chateau Pontet Canet 2003 Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe The spectacular 2003 Pontet Canet is still incredibly young and vigorous. This full-bodied classic boasts a dense purple color as well as a superb nose of graphite, creme de cassis, forest floor, licorice and a hint of truffles, low acidity, and extravagant richness. Most of the tannins have been resolved in this superstar of the vintage. It should continue to drink well for years. R. All the building components of acidity, tannin, wood and alcohol are judiciously and impressively integrated. It is a blend of 90% Merlot and the rest equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc made by Christine Valette and her husband Xavier Pariente with the consultancy help of Michel Rolland. I-m not sure what the heady alcohol level is in Troplong Mondot in 2010 (it certainly must be in the 15%+ range), but it is well-concealed behind the extravagant, richness, full-bodied power, and pure nobility of this majestic wine. Forget this for 5-7 years and drink it over the following three decades. R. Parker for TWA, 99 pts. 02/13 (owc) $1,100-1, Vieux Chateau Certan 2005 Pomerol R. 35 205 Clavelier Chambolle Musigny La Combe d Orveaux bottles $ Domaine de la Romanee Conti Echezeaux 1985 u: both 2.5cm, light capsule corrosion to one, evidence of old seepage to one Very ripe and still quite fresh with black fruit mixed with spicy secondary aromas that lead to robust, slightly rustic yet stylish and rich flavors that still display some structure on the moderately long finish. This is really quite pretty and certainly a very good showing for this wine. While it s drinking well now there is no rush. Note: this bottle was fresher than several I have had lately. Burghound, 91 pts. 01/04 2 bottles $1,600-2, Domaine de la Romanee Conti Grands Echezeaux 1985 u: 3cm A very impressive showing with spice, ripe earth, a touch of underbrush and mushroom aromas followed by wonderfully complex, rich and still nicely intense flavors of excellent length and real velvet on the finish. While there is certainly no rush, I would begin to look for opportunities to drink this as it risks thinning out over time. Still, this is easily as good as the 85 La Tâche, something that the DRC Grands-Echézeaux rarely achieves. Multiple recent, and consistent, notes. This is a very interesting wine as the dense tannins are so fine-grained that the palate impression is like the finest satin. The driving minerality adds another element and there is a palpable sense of energy to the balanced, focused and beautifully well-delineated finish that explodes with mouth coating dry extract. This is unapologetically built to age and indeed it will require plenty of it. Succinctly put, this is breathtakingly good. 36 222 Comtes Lafon Meursault Charmes 2006 Cote de Beaune This is quite a bit riper though there is no overt exoticism present with aromas of peach, spiced pear and apricot that merge into exceptionally rich and relatively big flavors blessed with ample amounts of palate coating dry extract that completely buffer the firm spine of ripe acidity and intense finishing minerality. This is balanced and driving with a linear finish that slowly fans out as it lingers. Superb. Parker for TWA, 95 pts. 12/95 2 bottles $ Guigal La Landonne 1985 Northern Rhone u: 2.5cm Once again the darkest, thickest, most powerful, and formidably concentrated of Guigal s single-vineyard Cote Roties, the 1985 La Landonne is also the least flattering and most intimidating. Like its two siblings, it is throwing a hefty sediment, with the inside of the bottle resembling that of a 15-year-old vintage port. The color is still a murky, inky purple. The nose offers up aromas of beef blood, vitamins (iron?), minerals, smoke, and truffles. Extremely thick, full-bodied, and massive, with noticeable tannin, this monster wine reveals no hard edges, but it does possess teeth-staining extract and power. It is a remarkable effort! 37 240 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2010 Tuscany The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a wine that shows immense harmony and inner poise. The powerful vintage is elegantly tempered in this expression thanks to the flowing and musical nature of the aromatic presentation. The bouquet opens to a steady pace with small berry nuances followed by spice, tobacco, pressed rose and moist earth. Dig deep and there is a bit of white truffle in there as well. The wine boasts a silky texture with a lean, tonic feel that excels in terms of length and persistence. It never feels too heavy or flat. In fact, the wine is brimming with inner energy and vitality. 50 Ullage (Level of Wine) Illustration and Interpretations For Bordeaux, Port, and other shouldered bottles n. ullage is into neck bn. bottom neck vts. very top shoulder ts. top shoulder; usual level for Bordeaux older than 15 yrs hs. high shoulder; usual cork reduction, often found in Bordeaux over 20 yrs, low risk ms. mid shoulder; variation likely as indicates cork deterioration lms. low mid shoulder; some risks, reflected in estimates s. shoulder; risky, reflected in estimates into neck bottom neck very top shoulder top shoulder high shoulder mid shoulder low mid shoulder shoulder Ullage of wines of vintages fifteen years and younger may be assumed to be of bottom neck or better unless otherwise noted. Similarly, regarding older vintages, lack of notation indicates acceptable and appropriate ullage, clear label and sound cork; potential bidders must be prepared for reasonable variations in ullage in all vintages older than 20 years. Bidders with specific condition questions should contact the Fine Wines department. Conditions generally not noted on group lots. Bordeaux wines are cataloged referencing the 1855 classification. Chateau Petrus cataloging reflects the practice of granting it 1er Cru Classe and other notable Pomerol Chateaux are designated Cru Classe. All Bordeaux wines may assume to be chateau bottled unless otherwise stated. It is standard practice for Skinner/Lower Falls Wine Co. to open all original wooden cases (owc) for visual inspection. The opening of banded cases will be determined on an individual basis. For Burgundy, German wines, and all other more gradually slope-shouldered bottles, the ullage measurement is taken in centimeters from cork base, e.g. 3cm, 5cm, 7cm. Bottle Sizes bottle (750 ml) jeroboam (4xbt); Burgundy, Champagne demi bottle (demi) magnum (2xbt) jeroboam (6xbt); Bordeaux split (1/4 bottle) Champagne marie jeanne (3xbt) imperiale (8xbt); Bordeaux double magnum (4xbt) methuselah (8xbt); Burgundy Buyers Caution: Levels are as when cataloged; ullage may change due to cork deterioration; other bottle conditions may occur during storage and shipment. Risk of ullage variation and cork deterioration and/or failure is assumed by the buyer at time of sale and no sale cancellations, price negotiations, or bottle substitutions will be undertaken by either Skinner or Lower Falls Wine Co. Similarly, no substitutions will be made due to inaccurate descriptions. Flights of Lots: Are of the same type, vintage and bottle count and follow one after another numerically, though ullage and bottle conditions may vary. The auctioneer may exercise discretion to offer, in consecutive lot order and at that same price, the following lots in the flight to the first successful bidder of that flight. Subsequently, those lots not purchased will be offered anew and so on. Absentee bids placed on any lot in a flight will be applied to the next lot in the flight (if unsuccessful), until the flight concludes. Environmental Note: It has only been in the last years that the wine industry has moved away from using lead capsules to cover the cork and neck of a bottle. When opening an older wine, if you do have a lead capsule, give consideration as to how you dispose of it. 48
