2 UNDERSTANDING BURGUNDY Burgundy is the narrowest and longest wine region in France, but one of the smallest, most fragmented and difficult to understand. With more than 1,000 names and over 100 appellations it s easy to see why. To understand the fragmentation, one must look at the past briefly. Once Burgundy was owned almost entirely by the church, until 1789 when the French Revolution took place. During this vineyards were seized and broken up and given to families to farm. French Inheritance laws have further fragmented these vineyards. When it comes to the grapes grown in Burgundy, things get a little simpler. There are only three main grapes grown in Burgundy. Pinot Noir for red wine, Chardonnay for the white and Gamay for Beaujolais. There are various levels of quality in Burgundy. At the top is Grand Cru. Next is Premier Cru, followed by wine from a specific Village and then Burgundy generic appellations. Burgundy can be divided into three distinct areas: 1. CHABLIS: The northern most and closest to Paris is Chablis. The only grape allowed to be planted here is Chardonnay because the soil is made up of chalk, decomposing oyster shells and the fact that it is very cold and could not reliably ripen Pinot Noir. 2. CÔTE D OR: the heart of Burgundy which is then further divided into; a. Côte de Nuits: Quite literally home to the world s most expensive vineyards and wines. Virtually all Pinot Noir because of the soil being heavier and more clay based. b. Côte de Beaune: The lower part of Burgundy central is dominated by Chardonnay and is the home to the most expensive Chardonnays in the world from the village of Puligny Montrachet. 3. BEAUJOLAIS: a huge region that produces vastly more wine than the 3 other areas combined. The only grape really planted here is Gamay. CÔTE DE NUITS The following are the main villages in the Côte de Nuits; GEVREY CHAMBERTIN In this village the vineyards are on gentle slopes with layers of pebbles on the top. The wines from Gevrey show red berry characters when young and game characters in the richer wines, as they develop they tend to have more licorice characters. Grand Cru s are Chambertin, Clos de Bèze, Charmes-Chambertin, Chapelle, Chambertin, Griotte- Chambertin, Latricières-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin and Ruchottes-Chambertin. MOREY-ST-DENIS Not as well known as the other villages in the Côte de Nuits, located between Gevrey and Chambolle, the vineyards in Morey-St-Denis have a good free draining gradient and a base of limestone. Morey-St-Denis is home to the Grand Cru vineyards of Clos de la Roche, Bonnes Mares, Clos de Tart, Clos St-Denis and Clos des Lambrays. CHAMBOLLE MUSIGNY Wines from Chambolle Musigny are one of the most delicate in Burgundy, they display fragrant fruit and finesse. The light soil and varying gradients of the village create this delicacy and the complexity of these wines. Grand Cru s are Bonnes Mares and Musigny. VOUGEOT This village is home to one Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot which covers more than four-fifths of the area under vines here. Clos de Vougeot wines are rich and generous yet not overpowering. VOSNE ROMANÉE Home to the most expensive wines in Burgundy, the village of Vosne Romanée is home to the Grand Crus Romanée-Conti, La Romanée, La Tâche, Romanée-St-Vivant, Richebourg and La Grande Rue and home to some of the best domains including Domaine de la Romanée Conti. The Grand Cru s of Grands Échézeaux and Échézeaux are located next door in Flagey Échézeaux.

3 UNDERSTANDING BURGUNDY NUITS ST GEORGES The town of Nuits added the name of its finest vineyard - Les Saint Georges - in the 19th century. There are no Grand Cru in the village of Nuits St Georges, but a host of very good Premier Cru. A FEW MORE FACTS: Generic wines are labelled as Burgundy or Bourgogne. In total there are more than 400 Premier Crus vineyards in Burgundy. There are 32 Grand Crus Vineyards in total 8 white Grand Crus, 24 red Grand Crus. Of these 24 are from the Côte de Nuits and 8 from the Côte de Beaune. The largest red Grand Cru in Burgundy is Corton, this Grand Cru represents about 25% of Grand Cru Red wines by volume. It s very important to know your vintages when you purchase Burgundy is an excellent vintage. Recently 1996, 1997 and 2002 are all very good vintages, while 1999, 2005 and 2009 were excellent vintages. Unlike Bordeaux, it is more likely that Domaines change hands, personnel change and the quality can improve in a short period of time, so it s often prudent to read as many reviews as possible to get a sense of the quality level they are producing in the current vintage. CÔTE DE BEAUNE The following are the main villages in the Côte de Beaune: ALOXE-CORTON Home to the Grand Cru, Corton, both red and white Corton can be produced. Red wine from Aloxe-Corton is one of the most powerful and tannic in the area and needs time to develop. BEAUNE This village is more known as the centre of Burgundy, where you d likely stay when visiting the area, than for it s wines. There are however some good Premier Crus in this area. VOLNAY As with Pommard, there are no Grand Cru, but a host of Premier Crus, the wines from Volnay are fragrant, elegant and age very well. POMMARD There are no Grand Cru in Pommard although Grand Clos des Épenots would be a definite candidate if the Grand Cru classifications were ever reviewed; wines from this Premier Cru show finesse, character and the ability to age gracefully. Wines from Pommard definitely demand age, when young the tannins are very tight, as they age the power and richness in the wine develops.

4 Alex Gambal Alex is an American who visited Burgundy, fell in love and never left! Now normally you d run a mile, an American making wine in Burgundy! But don t, these wines are fantastic, well made and exceptionally well priced (not often written in a Burgundy offer). In his first year Alex purchased finished wines, in a very short time he had established relation ships with local growers and began to vinify the wines himself. The philosophy of Alex Gambal and of Fabrice Laronze, head winemaker, is a respect for the character of each appellation and vintage. In addition, they believe that good winemaking, although imperative, should be secondary to the quality of the grapes which result from relationships and a sharing of ideas with the growers ALEX GAMBAL BEAUNE 1ER CRU LES GREVES 2010 $89.00 $69.00 Burghound, 89-92: A brooding and quite somber nose speaks of earthy and floral dark berry fruit aromas dissolve gracefully into rich, intense and focused medium-bodied flavours that possess fine complexity on the firm and somewhat linear finish. This will need a few years to flesh out and harmonize but the underlying material is clearly present ALEX GAMBAL BOURGOGNE CHARDONNAY 2007 $64.00 $34.99 Burghound, 87/100: "A pure and highly expressive nose of lemon peel and floral notes merges into round, delicious, energetic and lightly mineral suffused flavors that possess excellent punch and culminate in a bone dry finish. Worth a look." ALEX GAMBAL BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR 2008 $44.00 $30.99 Alex Gambal is a boutique producer renowned for the exemplary quality of its wines. This entry-level Pinot Noir is a blend of Volnay and Pommard fruit that has been traditionally fermented and matured in oak and bottled without fining or filtering. The fragrant cherry and summer fruit aromas are nicely integrated with spicy oak. This is, in effect, a petit Volnay, soft textured and full of sensuous fruit flavours ALEX GAMBAL BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR 2009 $49.00 $31.99 Alex Gambal initially founded his own company as a négociant operation, producing his wines from purchased grapes, but he has since bought holdings that include parcels in top-rated vineyards. Les Deux Papis was produced predominately from Pinot Noir fruit grown in the Volnay and Pommard appellations, the Volnay portion providing seductive raspberry and cherry aromas and flavours and the Pommard portion giving the wine weight and depth ALEX GAMBAL BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR 2010 $39.99 $31.99 Burghound, 86/100: "A mildly rustic but attractively complex nose of red berry fruit, plum and violets leads to rich, delicious and attractively textured middle weight flavors that are supported by noticeably firm but ripe tannins before culminating in a balanced finish. A quality Bourgogne." ALEX GAMBAL CHAMBERTIN GRAND CRU 2008 $ $ Wine Spectator, 91/100: A straight, linear style, this red shows cherry, earth, spice and mineral flavors on a medium-weight frame. This is tight and needs time to reveal its complexity and full length. Best from 2014 through cases made. - BS ALEX GAMBAL CHAMBERTIN GRAND CRU 2009 $ $ Burghound, 92-94/100: This is also troubled by enough reduction to render the nose unreadable. There is however good vibrancy to the rich, serious and big-bodied flavors that possess ample power and weight before culminating in a mineral-driven and explosive finish that delivers outstanding length. This too should be capable of rewarding long-term cellaring, indeed patience will be a necessity. ALEX GAMBAL CHAMBOLLE MUSIGNY 2004 $80.00 $51.99 Burghound, 89/100: "A gorgeous Chambolle fruit nose that is wonderfully elegant and quite pure highlights round, sweet and supple light to medium weight flavors that possess good finishing punch and lovely persistence. This is deceptively light but the focus and length here are really quite impressive." ALEX GAMBAL CHAMBOLLE MUSIGNY 2006 $ $65.99 Red fruits dominate a wide and quite fine nose. There is sweetness, slightly forward acidity and a good and very persistent flavour that s finally bounded by a faint edge of tannin. A nice wine that shows none of its 25% new oak.

A lovely villages that should age well over the medium-term." ALEX GAMBAL CHAMBOLLE MUSIGNY 2008 $ $84.00 Burghound, 86-88/100: "A very Chambolle nose of pretty and very high-toned red pinot fruit trimmed in background mineral notes that continue onto the detailed racy and bright middle weight flavors that finish with a distinct edginess that may be due to the substantial quantity of CO2." Rustic tannins ALEX GAMBAL CHAMBOLLE MUSIGNY 2010 $ $ Wine Spectator, 90/100: Ripe, sporting cherry and raspberry notes, with accents of smoky oak. The tannins are on the woodsy side, showing ample sweet fruit and supple texture for balance. Best from 2015 through cases made. BS ALEX GAMBAL CHAMBOLLE MUSIGNY 1ER CRU LES 2006 $ $ Wine Spectator, 92/100: "Dense and chewy, yet also graceful, offering licorice, blackberry, spice and mineral flavors. Builds across the palate to a long, expansive aftertaste of dried fruit and spice. Best from 2012 through 2022." ALEX GAMBAL CHAMBOLLE MUSIGNY 1ER CRU LES 2007 $ $ Burghound, 91/100: "This is ever so slightly riper with a complex, airy and densely fruited nose that displays just a touch of oak influence that is followed by rich, delicious and noticeably mineral-infused middle weight flavors that offer both good depth and vibrancy and culminate in a lingering finish where a trace of wood resurfaces. It's important to note that the wood should not be an issue as it already seems to be integrating well." ALEX GAMBAL CHAMBOLLE MUSIGNY 1ER CRU LES 2009 $ $ Wine Spectator, 94/100: Supple and laced with cherry, raspberry and spice flavors, this red is the epitome of Chambolle - delicate, perfumed and silky. There's grip on the finish, and this is beautifully balanced. Best from 2015 through cases made. - BS ALEX GAMBAL CHAMBOLLE MUSIGNY 1ER CRU LES 2010 $ $ Burghound, 89-92/100: "Subtle but noticeable wood frames a well-layered nose of raspberry and cherry that is trimmed in attractive floral scents. There is a generosity to the supple and round middle weight flavours that possess a seductive mouth feel and fine finishing intensity where the wood resurfaces. While the wood adds nothing to the appeal it appears that there is enough underlying material to successfully absorb it in time." It's firm too, with the balance and structure to develop over the next few years." Attractive if not elegant with ample character." This is fashioned in a forward and early drinking style yet remains entirely serious. Recommended. Outstanding Top value." ALEX GAMBAL CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET 2009 $99.00 $79.99 Burghound, 90/100: As with the Clos du Cromin, there is a vestige of unabsorbed SO2 though again it s not really enough to detract materially from the otherwise pretty and fresh aromas of white peach, stone and ripe pear aromas. There is fine intensity to the mouth coating medium-bodied flavors that possess an abundance of dry extract that confers a textured and seductive mouth feel onto the persistent finish. A wine of harmony. Drink AM ALEX GAMBAL CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET 1ER CRU 2008 $ $99.00 Burghound, 88-92/100: A mild trace of SO2 does not diminish the attractiveness of the stone, white flower and resin suffused nose that is in keeping with the rich and intense flavors that possess fine volume along with the natural refinement of a classic Clos St. Jean, all wrapped in a balanced, long and delicious finish. Drink AM ALEX GAMBAL CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET 1ER CRU LA 2007 $ $89.90 Burghound, 92/100: "Here the wood is a bit more obvious though by no means intrusive as the ripe aromas of citrus, pear, peach and resin oil hints lead to rich, full and sappy flavors that retain good delineation and like the Clos St. Jean, excellent length and fine depth on the lingering finish." ALEX GAMBAL CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET 1ER CRU LA 2008 $ $99.00 Burghound, 91/100: Here the nose is quite similar to that of the Clos St. Jean though otherwise, there is less minerality but notably more complexity to the rich, generous and impressively lingering finish. This is also a wine of harmony and one that should reward medium-term cellaring. Drink AM

6 40886 ALEX GAMBAL CHOREY LES BEAUNE 2009 $85.00 $66.00 Burghound, 89/100: "This is prettier still with ultra-pure and very fresh red pinot fruit that complements well the supple, vibrant and equally fresh flavors that are shaped by unusually fine tannins for what this is as well as very solid length. This is a beautiful Chorey and worthy of consideration as well. Sweet Spot. Outstanding. Drink: " ALEX GAMBAL CHOREY LES BEAUNE 2010 $69.00 $54.00 Burghound, 88/100: "A pure and appealingly fresh nose of high-toned red pinot fruit that is nuanced by hints of humus and earth gives way to supple and lilting medium-bodied flavours that are quite round and very forward. There is a clean and dry palate impression with good integration of the supporting structure, all wrapped in a mildly rustic finish. Good quality here for what is at best a modest appellation." Black cherry and black currant flavours set the pace, before fine-grained tannins, spice and mineral flavors enter the mix. Fine length. Best from 2011 through 2022." ALEX GAMBAL CLOS VOUGEOT GRAND CRU 2007 $ $ Burghound, 92/100: "This is relatively elegant for a young Clos de Vougeot with an attractive mèlange of red and blue berries, earth, underbrush and a hint of the sauvage that also permeates the big, rich and serious full-bodied flavors that possess good mid-palate dry extract that buffers the otherwise firm tannins on the impressively long and youthfully austere finish where a touch of wood is also evident. A classically styled example that should age well." ALEX GAMBAL CLOS VOUGEOT GRAND CRU 2008 $ $ Robert Parker, 92/100: "Three of five barrels of Gambal s 2005 Clos Vougeot are from a parcel high up and against the wall of the Clos and Grands Echezeaux (and three of five are new, too). Roasted meat and blackberry aromas lead into a bright, slightly tart, undeniably concentrated mouthful of black fruits backed by persistent, charred meatiness, alkaline mineral notes, and a chewy load of tannins." ALEX GAMBAL CLOS VOUGEOT GRAND CRU 2009 $ $ Burghound, 91-93/100: Reserved yet elegant and airy aromas of spice, red and blue pinot fruit plus bass notes of warm earth give way to powerful and well-muscled flavors that display excellent mid-palate density and only mild austerity on the palate staining finish. Despite the power, this is less robust than one might expect from such a young Clos de Vougeot though it should be capable of 12 to 15 years of improvement. There is excellent complexity to the robust and driving finish and this will need at least a decade to reach full maturity." ALEX GAMBAL CORTON CHARLEMAGNE GRAND CRU 2008 $ $ Burghound, 94/100: "Discreet oak influence sets off an expressive nose of white flower, green apple and obvious mineral notes that continue onto the gorgeously deep, broad and powerful flavors blessed with ample dry extract on the driving and palate staining finish. The energy and intensity here are something and in terms of style and character, this is textbook Corton-Charlemagne with the stuffing and structure to age well. In a word, terrific." ALEX GAMBAL CORTON CHARLEMAGNE GRAND CRU 2009 $ $ Burghound, 92/100: In contrast to the expressiveness of the Genevrières, this is quite restrained with a muted nose of green fruit, lemon and apple plus distinct mineral notes that are also reflected by the serious, powerful and quite concentrated broad-shouldered flavors that possess fine depth and excellent length. This wellbalanced effort should reward 7 to 10 years of cellar time. Drink AM ALEX GAMBAL ECHEZEAUX GRAND CRU 2009 $ $ Burghound, 91-94/100: Relatively heavy reduction knocks down the nose though the rich, full-bodied and serious flavors possess good verve, volume and phenolic maturity as well as impressive breadth and depth on the extract-rich finish. Based on the apparent quality of the underlying material, this should be excellent in time" - AM ALEX GAMBAL LATRICIERES CHAMBERTIN GRAND CRU 2010 $ $ Wine Spectator, 93/100: An opulent, juicy style, embedded with spice-tinged cherry, raspberry and smoke flavors. The structure is well-integrated, with lively acidity and refined tannins providing support. The spice notes echo on the long finish. Best from 2017 through cases made. BS ALEX GAMBAL MEURSAULT CLOS DU CROMIN 2006 $ $84.00 Robert Parker, 87/100: "Almost confectionary in its nose of marzipan, vanilla, and nut brittle, the Gambal 2006 Meursault Clos du Cromin then comes to the palate with toasted nut and citrus that reflect much less sense of sweetness than the nose leads one to expect. This offers an excellent balance between richness and juicy primary fruit brightness. Esterous and voluminous in finish." ALEX GAMBAL MEURSAULT CLOS DU CROMIN 2007 $ $71.99 Burghound, 89/100: "An admirably discreet touch of wood sets off notes of hazelnut, white peach, pear and a hint of wet stone that transfers over to the rich, generous and full flavors that retain a fine sense of underlying detail on the multi-layered finish that possesses ample vibrancy and punch. This offers fine quality for its level and like the prior wines, is very much worth consideration." Hints of honey and spice add interest and reflect the presence of a modest percentage of botrytized fruit in this picking, but do not detract from the clarity and sheer refreshment of the finish." ALEX GAMBAL PULIGNY MONTRACHET 2007 $ $81.99 Burghound, 90/100: "Here the nose is a bit more elegant and higher-toned with classic Puligny aromas of very pure orchard fruit and acacia blossom notes trimmed in a deft touch of oak that slide gracefully into round and rich yet beautifully detailed medium-bodied flavors that possess fine mid-palate fat and are given a bit of lift by the subtle minerality that appears on the vibrant and zesty finish. Excellent quality for a villages level wine and this is recommended." 9 Domaine Jean Chartron Established in 1859 by the cooper-craftsman Jean-Edouard Dupard, Domaine Jean Chartron has been governed by four generations concerned with both the expansion and prosperity of the prestigious vineyards as the management of the rural district. The village owes it name to Jean-Edouard Dupard, when in 1873 as mayor of Puligny he asked the local council to authorize the decision that the name Montrachet - the most prestigious vineyard be added to that of Puligny, the original name of the village. 11 Domaine Anne Gros The Gros family have been making top quality wine in Vosne-Romanée since 1830 when Alphonse Gros married Madame Latour and acquired his first parcels of vines there. There were various divisons of the land until the latest generation took over in 1995 when Jean Gros retired. The estate was divided amongst his three children - Michel, Bernard (bottled under the Gros Frère et Soeur brand) and the youngest Anne. 13 Domaine Anne Parent The Parent family can trace their roots back to Etienne Parent who in 1787 established a professional and friendly relationship with Thomas Jefferson as his wine advisor for Burgundy. The Parent family have been a permanent fixture in Pommard since this time, with the sixth generation, sisters Anne and Catherine now in charge, their brother Francois working with his wife at their Domaine Anne Francoise Gros. Since 1998 Anne has modified her approach to the wines, 100% destemming, hand picking and using three sorting tables, the story here is a little like that at Domaine Lamarche, where in recent years the quality has escalated. Visiting here is great fun, Anne is very enthusiastic and has a wonderful way of describing her wines, she explained that for her Pommard has two distinctive characters that can be grouped into the North and the South. The Pommards from the North of the appellation being like a man that plays Golf and drives and Aston Martin, those made from grapes grown in the South being like a man that likes rugby and drives a Porsche. 14 Domaine Bonneau du Martray Bonneau du Martray has been run since 1993 by Jean Charles de la Morinière, an architect, who has returned to the 11 ha family property to manage it. The vineyard is on the side of the great Corton Hill, near Pernand and whilst it is one continuous site, the parcels of grapes are treated separately in the winery to maintain the individual characteristics to allow them to reflect as one great wine. Maturation is 33% in new oak for 12 months, the wines is blended and then assembled for a further 6 months of oak maturation. 15 Domaine Chanson The House was founded in 1750 in the reign of Louis XV by Simon Verry. Not the largest building in the area but from another era and unquestionably grandiose none the less. Domaine des Comtes Lafon's great white wines are nurtured in the deepest and coldest cellars in Burgundy. These wines a supremely well balanced with astonishing depth and complexity. The white wines are consistentl;y among the best in the region while the reds (since 1989) have reached the top devision. Comtes Lafon is owned and managed by Dominque Lafon who took over in He is set about recovering all the domaine's vines as metayage contracts come to an end. 40 Domaine Seguin-Manuel Seguin-Manuel is a very old estate, originally founded in 1824; in 2004 it was acquired by Thibaut Marion, a 42 year old born into wine and with experience including the family winery Chanson Père & Fils. The vineyards are managed organically, with no use of chemicals and quality in mind - small yields, strict pruning and green harvest. Initially located in Savigny-lès-Beaune, new plots have been added to the domaine in the villages of Beaune and Puligny-Montrachet since 2007 and more recently in Pommard and Meursault. More than 6 hectares of vineyard are now grown by the domaine. 42 Domaine Tortochot Domaine Tortochot is a lovely property in Gevrey and was rejuvenated by Chantal Tortochot who took over the estate from her father in the late 90 s. The family have been in Gevrey for many generations, but it was not until Chantal took over that the wines really showed their potential. Chantal is a very skilled winemaker who produces wines that beautifully represent the terroir, whilst being accessible and fruit driven. Her wines are impressive and the quality just gets better and better each vintage. Definitely a producer to start following. 43 Georges Duboeuf The undisputed King of Beaujolais is Georges Duboeuf, who started by roaming the region in his VW back in the sixties, making wine wherever he stopped, and whose company now produces upwards of 3 million cases a year, making him one of France's largest and bestknown wine merchants. An innovator in the way Beaujolais was made, he also took the concept of Beaujolais Nouveau to new heights. It is now one of the wine world's most famous events and accounts for 1/5th of his annual production (approximately 4 million bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau alone). Classic styling, full and nutty with excellent acid structure, all from an excellent vintage most agree is at least on a par with Drink VINCENT GIRARDIN MEURSAULT LE LIMOZIN BLANC 2010 $74.00 $58.00 Classic Meursault without the expected price tag, Engaging perfume of citrus fruit and blossom, lifted vibrant acidity gives the palate intensity and length. Whilst a village level wine, this is from a single vineyard that is situated alongside Charmes and underneath Genevieres. The 2009 version of this was exceptional, in comparison it is a little richer and fruit forward, the 2010 has a vibrancy and freshness VINCENT GIRARDIN MEURSAULT LES PERRIERES 2010 $ $ Stephen Tanzer, 94/100: "Bright pale yellow. Exotic, slightly high-toned aromas of orange, hazelnut and spicy oak. On palate quite direct and somewhat uncomplicated with stonefruit flavours initially with sweetness, but tending to dryness and a little austerity, the acidity modest and falling away on the finish. Oaking is sensitive. One to drink over the next 2-3+ years VINCENT GIRARDIN GRANDS ECHEZEAUX 2008 $ $ Stephen Tanzer, 92/100: Medium red. Candied raspberry, blueberry, flowers and spicy oak on the nose. Suave and silky but youthfully tight; in a drier style than Girardin's other grand crus but seamless, vibrant and perfumed. This really coats the mouth with flavor without leaving any impression of weight. Finishes with terrific cut and length, and lovely lingering perfume VINCENT GIRARDIN GRANDS ECHEZEAUX 2009 $ $ Stephen Tanzer, 92-95/100: Good red-ruby. Captivating aromas of black raspberry, crushed rock and cocoa powder, lifted by a floral treble note. Utterly silky on entry, then velvety and suave in the middle, with perfectly integrated acidity. Refined, scented and very ripe, not to mention concentrated, with a lovely sugar/acid balance giving the wine noteworthy finesse. Finishes tactile, sappy and savory, with terrific chewy persistence.
