A long family tradition 4

The founding of the estate In earlier times the Médoc was described as a wild and lonely region with an ungrateful and hostile soil invaded by swamps. This landscape was reshaped in the 17th century when enterprising men arrived to create the great wine-growing properties of today s Médoc. A reference in the archives to «forty very gravelly plots» at Saint-Lambert close to Pauillac records the founding of the estate by Pierre de Mazure de Rauzan, a great name in the history of the wines of Bordeaux. The vineyard only acquired its name somewhat later when Thérèse, daughter of the founder, received the estate as a dowry when marrying Jacques de Pichon Longueville, the first President of the Bordeaux Parliament. Thus began the history of one of the most famous Bordeaux vineyards, which remained unaltered and in the hands of one single family for more than 250 years Baron Joseph In 1779, the young Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville took over the running of the property at the age of 19. He was 90 years old when he died, having witnessed during his long reign three revolutions, five kings, two republics and an empire. Despite the difficulties, he relentlessly pursued a policy of ever higher quality wines. His efforts were rewarded in 1855 when the Médoc classification, drawn up under Napoléon III, ranked the château as a 2nd classified growth. On the eve of his death in 1850, he chose to divide the property between his five children. So as to be fair to all, he applied the simplest mathematical rules: his two sons were to receive two fifths of the vineyard and the winemaking facilities; his three daughters, the other three fifths. After an intermediary period of a few years, when the whole property was administered by Baron Raoul de Pichon Longueville, the estate was broken up. From then on the Pichon Longueville properties were to have two separate and different destinies. 5

La Comtesse de Lalande Virginie, one of the daughters of Joseph who was also the wife of the Count of Lalande, decided in about 1860 to take over the management of her estate as well as those of her two sisters, bringing them together independently under the name of Comtesse de Lalande. As from 1850, through her wish to live in the heart of the Médoc on the lands of Pichon Longueville, she had commissioned the Bordeaux architect Duphot to build a residence inspired by the Hôtel de Lalande in Bordeaux, in which her husband had spent his childhood. Her passion for vines, as well as the quality of her management, made her one of the Médoc s most illustrious characters of the 19th century. She made a lasting impact on the estate, which still bears her name. The difficult years Without heirs to the estate, the property was little by little passed down from aunts to nieces. By 1920, the Great War had taken a devastating human toll on the Médoc region, and vineyards were put up for auction. Despite the unfavourable economic circumstances, Edouard and Louis Miailhe, descendants of an ancient family of Bordeaux property owners and wine-brokers, bought Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in May Eliane de Lencquesaing Daughter of Edouard Miailhe, she became the new owner and general manager of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in Quite naturally, she revived the tradition begun by the Comtesse de Lalande. She took personal charge of the running of the family property, combining her love and passion for wine with rigorous management. She made numerous investments to equip the estate with the latest, high performing winemaking tools. She tirelessly travelled the globe and was one of Bordeaux s most enthusiastic ambassadors, constantly seeking out potential new markets for her wines. Under her management, the quality of this estate s wines very quickly rose to an altogether higher plane, gaining recognition all over the world. Louis Roederer - A third family Eager to ensure continuing success for the estate in the future, May-Eliane de Lencquesaing chose to pass her property into different hands. Her chosen successors were the Louis Roederer Champagne house, which became the new owners in January This family-run company is managed by Frédéric Rouzaud and owns two other wine estates in the Bordeaux area: Château de Pez and Château Haut Beauséjour. Over three centuries, only two families had been at the helm to guide this property and its wines towards ever greater renown. A third now arrived to preside over its destiny, determined to build on what had been achieved and to take the growth to even higher levels of quality and prestige. 6

A unique terroir 7

The land The variety of the plots, with their different soil compositions and grape varieties, explains the complex character of the wines of Pichon. These plots carry such names as Ardileys, Moulin Riche, Longueville, Grand Plant, La Chapelle, Virginie, Sophie and Marie-Joséphine. They encircle the Château, then lead down close to the river and alongside Château Latour, the famous First Classified Growth. The 89 hectare/210 acre vineyard also stretches across the stream bordering Saint Julien and almost touches the Leoville plateau, before reaching back to the great Pichon Longueville plateau to the south of the Pauillac appellation. Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is unusual in owning 11 hectares (27 acres) of vines in the commune of Saint- Julien, to which it owes its unique character of elegance and suppleness. Soil and subsoil The exceptional richness of the wines of the Pauillac appellation is due to its poor, low-yielding soil. The gentle slopes are made up of gravel on clay subsoil, enabling excellent drainage of rainwater. This gravel, dating back to the Quaternary era, is called Garonnaise gravel, and is notably made up of a Gunzian layer, the most ancient and most elevated geologically, which explains the quality of the best Haut-Médoc vineyards. Climate Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is ideally situated between the Gironde Estuary and the Atlantic Ocean. These two bodies of water favour air movements and temper the vineyard s microclimate, creating the optimum conditions necessary for ripening the grapes. 8

Winemaking and ageing 9

Harvesting Constant care and attention is given to the vines to bring the grapes to perfect ripeness in optimal conditions of health. Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande remains faithful to traditional hand-harvesting, and each year more than one hundred pickers often from the same Andalusian families come to pick the estate s grapes, the order of the harvesting depending on the ripeness and age of each plot. The Merlot, an early-ripening variety, is the first to be harvested, followed by the Cabernets and the Petit Verdot, which are later-ripening. The grapes are now harvested in small crates. Rigorous sorting is practised in the vineyard and again on arrival at the vat room (double sorting table), followed by optical sorting. Only the best grapes are retained. Winemaking After reception of the harvest, de-stemming and crushing, the grapes are placed in temperature-controlled wooden or stainless-steel vats, of variable capacity, allowing a precise and rigorous selection by plot. The heating and cooling system enables the alcoholic and malolactic fermentations to be controlled with precision. The vatting period ranges from 18 to 24 days depending on the year. Frequent pump-overs are performed to extract maximum colour and tannins from the skins. Ageing Once blended, the wine is aged in oak barrels sourced from the Allier and Nièvre forests in France. The oak refines the wine, adding its own aromas and tannins, whilst allowing it to acquire the soft richness that is lacking in its youth, thanks to the gradual, natural contact with air through the pores of the wood. 10

The Grand Vin of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is aged 18 months in oak barrels; half of them are brand new; the other half are second-fill barrels. The barrels have a medium toast, which enhances their aromas. A harmonious balance of oak and wine is always sought. For this reason, only 25% of new oak is used for the ageing of the second wine. Racking takes place every three months up to the bottling. Traditional fining with egg whites is still carried out to clarify the wine. Blending The blending of the vats is carried out at the end of December or beginning of January by Pichon s winemaking team and consultant winemakers. Fréderic Rouzaud presides over the discussions and decisions as to which vats will make up the final blend of the Grand Vin. A second selection of vats is then made for the second wine: the Réserve de la Comtesse. Produced from the same terroir as the Grand Vin, it mirrors perfectly the same quality and finesse. It benefits from the same attention to detail during its ageing but nevertheless has its own personality. The bottling is done at the Château in the month of June in the second year after the harvest. The prestigious bottles of the Grand Vin are embossed with the coat of arms of the Pichon Longueville and Lalande families. Characteristics of the wine The special mix of grape varieties, along with the 11 hectares (27 acres) of vines located on Saint-Julien soil, give the wine of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande individual character that makes it stand out from the other classified growths of the Pauillac appellation. Complexity, elegance and longevity remain the hallmarks of its pedigree; these characteristics are found in each new vintage. The nose exhibits an intense bouquet of aromas combining blackcurrants and violets, along with vanilla and cinnamon. On the palate, ripe, soft tannins come through well in a firm structure with amazing suppleness, perfect harmony and great length. When young, the wine is pleasantly appealing without in the least prejudicing its longevity. James Laube of the «Wine Spectator» has called Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande a «First Class Second Cru», a description rightly fitting for such a wine. 11

The arrival of Roederer: a new era 12

Restructuring of the vineyard On taking control of the estate, Roederer commissioned an in-depth study of the vineyard. Numerous holes were bored to get a better understanding of the soil and sub-soil composition, leading to precise mapping of many of the plots. A restructuring plan was then put in place in several stages. Following this study a fifteen-year replanting plan was implemented to favour a better match between the grape variety and its rootstock and the nature of the soil. Eventually the grape varieties will be 60% Cabernet Sauvignon 29% Merlot 7 % Cabernet Franc 4 % Petit Verdot A new way of working the vineyard and the soil has been adopted. Cultivation of the soil has now become the rule, with a view to eliminating the use of herbicides. Pruning has been modified so as to favour the training of the vine to increase its lifespan and not its yield. Green harvesting has been made more precise and better adapted to each plot and each variety. The wish to reduce the use of pesticides has led the estate to study tailor-made treatments adapted to each plot. Trials with organic and biodynamic viticulture have taken place in parts of the vineyard. This has allowed a study of the behaviour of the vine so as to eventually adopt this form of viticulture more generally, with a view to conserving the environment. 13 Finally, in order to improve quality, the role of the vineyard workers has been reorganised. Piece work has been eliminated in favour of functioning as a team, with better working conditions. Tutoring has also been put in place, whereby the senior members of the team train the youngest in various vineyard tasks.

A new vat room Following the restructuring of the vineyard, the next step was to design a vat room allowing better vinification by vineyard plot. The large old tanks from the 1980s were therefore replaced with smaller capacity tanks so that each vineyard plot could be vinified separately. The new vat room has first of all been designed to use gravity. The grapes are tipped directly into the fermentation tanks from the top, without pumping. There are 63 tanks, 12 made of wood and 51 in stainless-steel, with different capacities. 32 truncated conical stainless-steel tanks with a double skin, for more gentle and better-controlled extraction 11 cylindrical stainless-steel tanks of 120 hl 8 stainless-steel tanks of 70 hl 12 wooden vats of 85 hl The vat room was built between August 2012 and September The project was entrusted by Bordeaux architect Philippe Ducos and engineering company Ingerop. Functionality, quality and technical improvement were the key words that guided the project. The architect made use of natural light and natural materials such as glass, wood and steel. He also opened up the building to the outside using large bay windows to take advantage of the exceptional view over the vines and the river. 14

The Spirit of the Estate 15

At Pichon there is no ostentation, all is authentic; every detail bears witness to a past in which elegance and refinement have consistently been sought, in the true spirit of the distinguished Pichon Longueville family. Gentleness and calm are all around: the rose garden, bay-tree thickets and the shade of huge trees, the terrace inspired by Italy and its Palladian villas cypresses, balustrades and terra-cotta motifs, all surrounded by the vines of Pauillac and Saint-Julien. Strolling along the drives of the grounds, you sense a search for beauty, harmony and elegance. At a very short distance, the estuary, traditionally called the river, beckons, reminding us of its history of voyages and trade routes. The Château building is of sober architectural style, with a mixture of classical, medieval and Renaissance elements, complimented by a tower holding a very elegant spiral staircase. This fine residence was restored in a spirit of rigour and refinement. All the furnishings have kept their original unity and harmony. If only walls could speak, what stories they could tell us! Family meals and receptions with all dishes carefully chosen to accompany the wines of 1878, 1893, 1899, 1900, 1906, 1928 and 1945 They would also tell us the moving story of Virginie and her sister Sophie de Pichon Longueville, a student of the great painter Gérard in Paris, a young lady with both charm and talent. She left us 14 paintings of romantic landscapes and portraits of her family, including one of her brother-in-law, Count Henri de Lalande. Art and culture have always enjoyed pride of place at the estate. Today, the château holds a unique collection of antique glassware and contemporary sculptures that were brought together by May-Eliane de Lencquesaing. 16
