Lunch today is at the Parkview Restaurant. This quaint restaurant is thought to be haunted. We continue along to Cayuga Lake, the longest of the Finger Lakes and the tallest waterfall in the Northeast, Taughannock Falls (taw gannuk). You will be viewing the Falls from across the gorge. This waterfall is actually taller than Niagara Falls! We travel along the Lake s Western shore to Varick Winery where we will be doing a sampling of Finger Lakes wines. This winery is a sampling station beyond the ordinary. You will be able to sample jams, salsas, oils, vinegars, pickles and much more.
We arrive at our hotel, the Holiday Inn in Auburn, NY where we will have dinner at the hotel this evening and a chance to rest up for a full day of touring. This morning we will have a full buffet breakfast at the hotel and meet our local guide before visiting the Seward Mansion. This was the home of William Seward who was Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln. His home is a perfect example of life in the 1800s. Lunch is on our own today in Auburn. This afternoon we visit the Tubman House. Harriet Tubman led over 300 fugitives out of slavery in the mid-1860 s. We visit this home where she ended her days and hear tales of her life. We then continue on to the Cayuga Museum with exhibits on life in the Finger Lakes region and the Case Research Lab where Theodore Case invented the first commercially successful system of recording sound on film. We return to the hotel to freshen up before dinner at the historic Sherwood Inn in nearby Skaneateles. Originally a stage coach stop, we now dine in the elegance and comfort of the 21 st century. After a buffet breakfast and check out, we visit Mackenzie-Childs with a video presentation of the process of making the Majolica pottery followed by a tour of the farm house with the products used in an authentic house. Lunch today is at the Hilltop Inn near Elmira, NY, Mark Twain country. We will hear tales of Mark Twain as well as enjoy one of his favorite views while we have lunch today. There will be a fast food stop for supper before we head back to Surratt House.
