1. On Reaching India 1.1 Welcome! Simply put, India is the land of unity in diversity. Be it diversity in culture, language, literature, religion, history, cuisine, or art. Some historians call it the oldest living civilization on earth, which is why you can find influence of all major historic eras known to mankind in its culture. While its sprawling geographical landscapes and rich flora make it an attractive tourist destination, its rapidly developing economy and hungry untapped consumer markets make it an international centre for IT, trade, and commerce. Urban India portrays a beautiful amalgamation of the old and the new. It still has its roots deep dug into traditional Indian family setups and value systems but at the same time is also developing and globalizing at a blinding speed. It is a mix of ideas, people, modernity and heritage that makes India so unique. So here s hoping that you have a wonderful time exploring this truly incredible country and have a very pleasant stay. 1.2 How to reach IMT Ghaziabad IMT Ghaziabad campus is 45 Km or a 90 Minutes drive from Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi. The nearest Delhi Rail Metro station is Vaishali at a distance of around 12 Km from the college. A taxi can be arranged by the college to pick you up from the airport if you so desire. You will, however, be required to give us prior intimation in this case so that the necessary arrangements can be made. 1.3 On reaching your new home You need to report at the International Relations Office (IRC) and get in touch with Mr. Krishna Murari Sinha (Ph.: +91-9810287500). Please register yourself at the Foreigner s Registration Office at Ghaziabad within 48 hrs. of your arrival in India to avoid fines and hassles. 1.4 Currency Exchange You can exchange all major foreign currencies at Delhi Airport after clearing immigration. There are several foreign exchange counters (such as the Thomas cook counter) available there. There is no restriction on the amount of foreign currency comprising notes, coins, travellers cheque and drafts drawn on Indian banks that you may carry to India. However, if the total amount of Indian currency is equivalent or exceeds USD 10,000 then you need to declare it to the Indian custom authorities at 3

the airport. Currency can also be exchanged with the various foreign exchange dealers in Ghaziabad. The nearest counter is at 5-7mins walking distance from the campus at RDC. The currency can be exchanged anytime during the normal working hours (10:00 am - 6:00 pm). 1.5 Telephone Facilities To make a local/long-distance call, you will have to go to telephone booths located around campus. There are several phone booths within the radius of a few meters from the campus. These booths are usually open late into the night. You may also keep a cellular phone for your private use. The Indian Cellular Telephony System uses GSM technology, which is incompatible with cell phones in North America. While Europe also uses GSM technology, please confirm the compatibility of your cell phone with Indian Standards as different frequencies are used in India. In most cases there is a software lock that needs to be opened by the cell phone operator. You may buy cheap basic cell phones (cheapest one being 1000) and get a local GSM connection to go with it. Some common service providers are Airtel,Vodafone, Idea, Tata and Reliance. Most of these service providers also provide international calling cards. The closest cell phone shops are in Kavi Nagar Market, located very close to the campus. 1.6 Climate and Clothing From September to end November, the temperature ranges from 85F (30ºC) during day to 60F (15ºC) during the night. December to January, the temperature ranges from 70F (21ºC) during daytime to 45F (7ºC) during the night. Summer season spans from April to August, with temperatures reaching up to 113F (45ºC) in June. It is essential that you plan your wardrobe in accordance to the weather. We suggest light cotton clothes for September and October and light to heavy woollen clothes from November to January. 4

2. On Campus 2.1 Need a Buddy? By the time you reach the campus, IRC would have initiated a buddy programme where student volunteers from IMT Ghaziabad will be assigned to you as buddies. This will help you settle down with relative ease. You can also use your buddy s inputs while deciding on courses, everyday issues of campus life and regarding any queries/problems that you may face before and after reaching campus. 2.2 Accommodation IMT Ghaziabad is a fully residential campus and therefore exchange students are accommodated at the student hostels within campus. Your hostel room will be furnished with basic furniture and amenities (namely bed, mattress, study table, and chair)and are air conditioned. But do carry your own bed sheets and pillow covers. Bathrooms and toilets are attached. They are cleaned every day and have hot water facility. Exchange students will be sharing rooms with other students on double/triple sharing basis. Accommodation is compulsory for all exchange students. 5

2.3 Housekeeping and Laundry The rooms are cleaned everyday by the housekeeping department (free of cost). Laundry service is available in the campus. Your clothes will be collected and delivered back to your room twice a week. The laundry service includes cleaning and ironing at a nominal charge per piece. Dry cleaning service is also available. 2.4 Drinking Water: It is advisable that you use bottled water during your first few days at IMT GHAZIABAD. The water dispensers on campus have filtered portable water, but you might take a few days to get accustomed to the same. Some reliable mineral water brands are Bisleri, Bailey, Aquafina and Kinley. Please note, that tap water in the bathrooms is not potable. 2.5 Food The IMT Mess is controlled by the students themselves. It serves tasty, hygienic and nutritious food 4 times in a day at fixed timings. In addition, there is a canteen and a cafe on campus. The food at the mess is primarily north Indian, which might prove to be a little spicy for exchange students. (Think Mexican food). Television sets with cable connection are available in the mess as well as the living lobby. For all those night birds, the Canteen and cafe remain open around the clock. The cost of canteen/cafe food is not included in your food fee. The Canteen serves tea, coffee, soft drinks, packaged juice, chips, noodles, sandwiches and a variety of Indian snacks etc. Cuisines from all over the world are available at various restaurants within close proximity of the campus and also in Ghaziabad, Gurgaon, Noida, and New Delhi. So, if you feel homesick, you always have the option of going out to eat your favourite food. In addition to this, several local and international fast food joints deliver food on our campus, so you will never run out of options for having good food! 2.6 Internet and IT Lab The institute provides 24x7 wireless internet connectivity at no extra charge so you can stay connected no matter where you may be within the campus. An Ethernet 6

node is also provided in every hostel room. You will need to get your laptop or smartphone configured at the Computer Centre to connect to the in-house Wi-Fi network. There is also an Information Technology Lab equipped with state of the art hardware and software. We also have an academic partnership with CISCO, which enables us to offer their certified courses on our curriculum. 2.7 Library The Library at IMT, Ghaziabad is open 7 days a week, for 21 hours a day (9am 6am). In addition to nearly 50000 books, the library also provides access to a vast collection of online resources - ranging from e-journals to company research databases. We use Harvard Business cases for studying. Some of the resources available include: E-Books Ebrary Blackwell Reference Online Company Research Databases BLOOMBERG Database CMIE-I Databases SAS - Education Analytical Suit E-Journals Databases Emerald Management EBSCO Business Source Complete INFORMS Journals International Research Databases World Bank E-Library IMD World Competitiveness Online India Stat.Com SAGE Journals India Quarterly Intl. Also available in the library is a Bloomberg Terminal. This can be used to access the Bloomberg Professional Service through which you can access real-time financial market data, news, price quotes, and more across the proprietary Bloomberg network. 2.8 Medical Insurance and Medical Facilities Although it isn t mandatory, it is highly recommended that you get a complete medical and accident cover before coming to India. There is a consulting doctor available on campus on all working days from 3:30PM to 5:30PM. The consultation is free on campus. However, you will have to pay for medicines and tests if any. Apart from this, there are clinics, pharmacists, and hospitals located within close proximity of the campus. Details can be obtained on arrival from the IRC office. We suggest you get yourself adequately vaccinated before you arrive in India. Some suggested vaccines are Typhoid, Malaria, Chicken Pox, Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B. 2.9 Study Material All study material, hand-outs and other electronic study materials are provided by the institute. Stationery needs would need to be purchased separately. 2.10 The NEEDZ Store NEEDZ is a cooperative store, run by the Make A Difference Foundation (MADF) student body. Here you can purchase items of daily use such as stationery, toiletries, cosmetics, as well as miscellaneous articles, including mosquito repellent creams and vaporizing liquid machines. The store is operated from the A-Block Hostel (Room 28) from 8p.m. to 11 p.m. every day. The profit made from all sales is used by MADF for its various social initiatives. 2.11 Sports at IMT Ghaziabad IMT Ghaziabad prides itself on being the mecca for sports activities in the Indian B- School fraternity. The sports facilities include: Basketball court Football field Cricket field Badminton courts Volleyball courts 8

These facilities are available to all students free of cost all day long. There is also a fully equipped gymnasium on campus. The gym is accessible for all the students free of cost. The annual Sports event Chakravyuh, conducted by the Sports Committee at IMT is one of the most anticipated sports events among all Indian B-Schools. It is a 72 hour non-stop event with participants coming from B-Schools across the country. 9

3. Around Campus 3.1 Banks and ATMs There are several state and private sector banks in the vicinity of the campus. All IMT Ghaziabad students usually have accounts with one or more of these. Major international banks such as Citibank, HDFC, Standard Chartered, and ICICI Bank have their ATMs and branches in Ghaziabad. Your international ATMs can be operated from the Citibank ATM in RDC, Raj Nagar, near the college campus. Since most international ATM cards have a maximum withdrawal limit of 10,000 per week, it is advisable that you carry 300-500 USD/Euro/GBP in cash when you arrive in India. 3.2 Fruits, Vegetables, and Groceries Fresh fruits, vegetables, and groceries are available in the local Sector-10 market. IRC members and the local students will be very happy to help you in locating stores that will cater to your requirements. 3.3 Shopping and Recreation For your daily needs, there are various markets and shops within walking distance from the campus.
