Prairie View Elementary Paw Print Volume, Issue 7 March, 205 Principal s News Nothing.I don t know! Inside this issue: March Calendar 2 March Lunch Menu 3 School Counseling News PTO Sock Hop 6 Vote for Jan Brett 7 4-5 If your child is anything like the three of mine, the above quote is the usual response to the What did you do at school today question. In fact, my own father would ask the same question at the dinner table. Regardless of the response, this nightly question and answer period can be a great way to check in with your child and reinforce the importance of an education. To put the record straight, we do all sorts of learning activities during the course of the day. Classroom teachers start out their lessons with an I Can statement. The statement is posted and discussed during the course of the lesson and provides a learning target for that content area. For example, I can multiply two digit numbers. This statement helps students focus and make connections in their brains. Then, most lessons continue with a large group discussion and discreet teaching of the new skill. Again, most teachers use the smart board and projector to demonstrate the skill. As the lesson continues, the teacher moves into guided practice. (We do together) Then, the lesson becomes independent practice at their desk or in small groups. (You do) Our teachers do a quality job of assessing all along the way to ensure comprehension and skill attainment. So, instead of what did you do today, ask your child to tell you the I Can statements for the day? I hope you will be surprised with a better, more in depth response.
