Boundary Weekly News This week we celebrated First Nations traditions, cultures and traditional teachings and education. On Wednesday we encouraged all students and staff to wear orange as a way to honour First Nations. The 3rd Annual Orange Shirt Day commemorated the Indian Residential School and was an opportunity to create meaningful discussion about the effects of Residential Schools and the legacy they have left behind. It was a day for survivors to be reaffirmed that they matter, as well as those that have been affected. Every Child Matters. Great job Boundary for supporting this important event! Please remember to send any cutlery, etc. that your kids will need for each hot lunch session (as it is not provided by the school). 2. Our Hot Lunch program needs your help! If you are able to help out within the school over lunchtime on Tuesdays, please consider signing up to help out. We are trying out a new sign-up program to allow us to clearly note where we could use volunteers - and we can see who to expect. Class Reps Needed! We are still looking for 2 class representatives per classroom to volunteer this year to provide better communication with families at our school. Class reps are an important part of each classroom, connecting the parents to the teachers and communicating any information the teachers may need shared. The role involves sending reminders and updates to parents in a timely manner, as well as attending monthly PAC meetings. We are still looking for the class reps for the following classes: Mr. Kiss - need 2 Mr. Meyer - need 2 Mrs. Harris - need 2 Mrs. Sewerin - need 2 Mrs. Koenigsfest / Ms. Mavor - need 1 If you are interested in becoming your child s classroom representative please email Gillian at, gillian_paton@shaw.ca Parking Safety Reminder Earlier this month, a traffic safety reminder from the RCMP was posted on the school district's website, reminding parents that with the start of the school year, driving safety in and around school zones should be foremost in everyone's mind. Unfortunately, this message has not reached as many parents as had hoped. Last week at Boundary Elementary, the North Vancouver RCMP Youth Intervention Unit received 13 complaints of vehicles parking or stopping illegally in a school zone- specifically at a yellow painted curb or adjacent to a crosswalk. One particular vehicle was observed parking illegally on 3 separate occasions. We are all in a rush, with places to go and things to do. As convenient as a close-to-school parking spot is, I'm certain that the school administration and teachers would rather your child be a little late because you had to park further from school, than having a child be absent because they were hit by a car. Please be reminded that parking or stopping at a yellow painted curb is PROHIBITED

under the District of North Vancouver Traffic Bylaw. This law of prohibited parking, as it relates to a school zone, is designed to protect visibility and thereby minimize traffic hazards for children. Thank you for your attention in this matter, and please drive safely. Walk or Bike to School Week Next week is Walk or Bike to School Week. Walk or Bike to School Week is a week-long celebration to encourage and celebrate students and their families walking or cycling to school. Stickers will be given out to students who participate in this celebration. Babysitters needed for PAC meetings We are looking for Red Cross Certified Babysitters who are interested in babysitting during our PAC meetings. If you are interested in helping out, please go to the PAC website, http://boundarypac.weebly.com/ and download and complete the PAC babysitting form. We will also need a copy of the babysitting course certificate that can be attached to the application. Tree Nut and Peanut Allergies Even though Boundary is currently is not a nut free school, please be sensitive to students who may suffer from allergic reactions to nuts. Contact your child's teacher for more information regarding nut sensitivities in the classroom. (Please see the handout from Vancouver Coastal Health). District & Community News RCMP is asking for your opinion! North Vancouver RCMP is asking for your opinion. Starting Monday, September 28, 2015 and for two weeks, citizens throughout North Vancouver can give the local RCMP Detachment input via an anonymous, online survey. Anyone who resides, works, or attends school (secondary students) in the North Vancouver service area is invited to participate and share their views. The survey is part of the preparation of a new Strategic Plan for the Detachment. The Strategic Plan provides the road map for the Detachment, assisting with decision-making about where and how to use resources to best serve community needs. Allergy Aware School and Childcare Settings Tips for parents If your child attends an allergy aware school or child care centre, you may be asked to help keep it safe and healthy for all children. Children with a severe food allergy must not eat even tiny amounts of the food that cause them to have an allergic reaction. A severe allergic reaction can come on quickly and cause death. Even when a child tries to be careful, an accident can happen. A child with a food allergy and their family are responsible for staying safe but need help from other children, parents, and teachers to help reduce the risk of an accidental exposure. Ask the school or child care centre to give you the guidelines they ask families to follow. Some schools ask that lunches and snacks be free of certain foods, like peanut or tree nuts. Teach your child to wash his/her hands with soap and water before and after eating. This helps stop food from getting on other things like desks, toys and books. Washing hands is good for everyone; it can also help reduce the spread of colds and flus. Teach your child not to share his/her food, drinks or eating utensils with others. Many children love to share. Teach children to share non food items instead (e.g. toys, stickers, games). Think about guidelines for school events and fundraisers that might include food. Talk to a school staff member about allergy aware health and safety at these events. The school may request that specific foods or ingredients be avoided. Other guidelines may be in place to help all children make healthy food choices. Labelling foods with complete ingredient lists is good practice. Tree Nut and Peanut Food Allergens What is the difference between tree nuts and peanuts? Almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts (filberts), macadamia nuts, pecans, pine nuts (pignolias), pistachio nuts and walnuts are all tree nuts. Peanuts are part of the legume family and are not a tree nut. How can I know if a food contains tree nuts or peanuts? Read product ingredient labels carefully to make sure they do not list any source of tree nuts or peanuts in the food. Often, different names are used for tree nuts and peanuts. See the Health Canada fact sheets found at the websites below for other common names to watch for on ingredient lists. Avoid foods and products that do not have an ingredient list. Recipes sometimes change or use other ingredients so read labels every time you shop. Be cautious of bulk food items as they may have come into contact with trace amounts of nuts. Food allergic people should not eat products with a may contain warning with respect to their allergen(s). Through cross contamination, a food that should not contain the allergen could become dangerous to eat for those who are allergic. Cross contamination can happen: When food is processed, e.g. through shared production and packaging equipment; At stores through shared equipment, e.g., cheese and deli meats sliced on the same slicer; and through bulk display of food products, e.g., bins of baked goods, bulk nuts; and During food preparation at home or in restaurants through equipment, utensils and hands, e.g. if a knife used to put peanut butter on toast at breakfast is also used to make a sandwich for lunch. The sandwich may have traces of peanuts and would be unsafe to send to a peanut aware school or child care setting.
