Located in the north of Toledo province, DO Mentrida borders with the provinces of Madrid and Avila and extends at the south of the impressive Sierra de Gredos. Canopy is one of the most originals cellars in Spain. A project of two people, Afonso and Belarmino, that besides extensive knowledge in winemaking, have a passion in producing authentic wines that is transmitted from the land to the bottle by selecting vineyards of old garnachas located at high altitude with ridiculously low productions of 1,300 kilos/hectare; extracting the juice by stepping with the feet on the grape with its own stalk on small vats without using any pumps; aged in barrels of different sizes (500 to 2000 liters) to highlight the fruit and minerality, clearly identifying each plot with only one or two barrels, and blending them in the bottle to create a fantastic wine in each category. Bodegas Canopy This project begins in 2004 with the selection of the best vineyards in the mountains of Toledo and Sierra de Gredos by two oenologist friends, Alfonso Chacón and Belarmino Fernández.
Old, mountain garnacha The search for our vineyards led them to discover one of the best terroirs in the area. The plots are located in a mountain range, at 750 meters altitude, over siliceous soils, with great abundance of granitic mother rock. A poor substratum, adapted from the old times to the cultivation of the wine grape. The Garnacha vineyards, planted in the 50 and 60 decades, are head-trained within narrow limits, since it was costumery to work with animals.
Wine infusion The grape is selected and brought to the cellar with refrigerated trucks in cases of 20 kilos. The bunches are introduced in small open barrels of 1000 liters with the stem, and are step slightly, as if it was a brunch infusion.
91 Parker LOCO White Garnacha 8 months in French barrel This is a very special wine, only 2000 bottles produced and this is the only white garnacha vineyard in the center of Spain, a special wine, with a very special packaging. Straw colored, powerful mineral aroma with maceration notes, sweet fruits and fragant herbs. Generous, full, original palate with hints of mineral. Fine, flavorful and persistent.
90 Parker CASTILLO DE BELARFONSO 100% Garnacha Organic Viticulture wine, 6 months in barrel Cherry ruby color. Aroma of spicy notes of pepper, tobacco, in the mouth is powerful, fleshy, flavourful palate, depicting the minerality of the mountain garnacha grape. Long and very balanced.
91 Parker TRES PATAS 100% Mountain Garnacha 12 months in oak 100% high mountain garnacha from 85-year-old vines, and it sees 12 months in new and used French oak. It has a slightly subdued, sandalwood-tinged bouquet that is nicely defined but would probably benefit from some decanting. The palate is well-balanced, with crisp raspberry and red currant fruit, wellintegrated oak and a dense, compact but very well-focused, brambly finish. This is a well-crafted, astutely made Mentrida red.
92+ Parker MALPASO 100% Syrah 12 months in French barrel Pure Syrah aged in 20% new and 80% old French oak, 30% without de-stemming. It has a lovely intiguing bouquet of blackberry, fresh rose petals and minerals that is both sophisticated and appealing. The palate is well-balanced with succulent ripe blackberry and briary on the entry. There is a core of sweetness here, but it is counterbalanced by the crisp acidity and the stem addition lending it leafiness towards the controlled, refined, but flavor-packed finish. This is another superb wine from this producer.
94 Parker LA VIÑA ESCONDIDA 100% Garnacha 18 months in oak fudre of 2000 ltrs Wine made with clusters from the hill of a 65 year old Garnacha vineyard with granitic soil. The vineyards in the hill are exposed to the four cardinal points, thus receiving different exposition to the rays of the sun and guaranteeing a perfect maturation. Ecological viticulture.
93 Parker CONGO 100% Garnacha 18 months in oak Pure Garnacha from the Alberche Valley - a selection of the best bunches from a 0.8- hectare parcel of vines raised for 18 months in French oak. The stem addition lends this an intriguing, well-defined, character-driven bouquet with raspberry leaf, cranberry and a touch of undergrowth. The palate is fresh on the entry with crisp raspberry and red currant fruit. It is very well-balanced with a clean, linear, enticing bouquet that is sophisticated and very appealing. Superb.
92 Parker KAOS 100% Mountain Garnacha Bright and high deep cherry color. Mineral, balsamic and graphite aromas. Chocolate, mineral and very long in the mouth. Very long velvety, leaves a pleasant taste in the mouth.
